My name is Terra Hillyer and I live in Santa Barbara, CA. I have lived with diabetes for 18 years! I am celebrating my 18th diabetic birthday by doing a double session of bikram yoga (one in the am and one in the pm) and an 8 mile trail run that includes amazing single track and views of the ocean and islands off the coast. Yes, life with diabetes is great!
I have been passionate about pushing my physical limits my entire life and especially since being diagnosed at 17 years old. For those who don't like to do the math, that makes me 35 years old. I enjoy rock climbing, surfing, trail running, mountain biking, hiking, to name a few. I have participated in 7 marathons, several halves on trail and road and numerous races of shorter distances. My most recent running race was completing my first ultra in December 2006, 35 miles on trail with over 10,000 feet of elevation gain. Since December 2006 I have been, well, pregnant.
My second child was born November 25, 2007. I am a blessed person, married and with two amazing children, my son, Logan (4) and my daughter, Lake. My pregnancies are by FAR my most proud accomplishments to date. Lucky for me, diabetes gave it that “extra” challenge I seem to love.
I remain inspired to meet children living with diabetes for two reasons: 1) they seem empowered to have risen above what others have perceived them to be capable of and 2) meet the parents that have provided them with the tools to respond in this manner. I feel it will be a treat to meet several of these “pairs” on this team! Thank you.
I couldn't imagine traveling across the country to Disneyworld and not having my kids with me. I am currently trying to figure out the logistics of having my husband (also an avid outdoors fanatic and runner) and children come with me for the marathon weekend. My husband would run the marathon, as am I.
In addition to being the primary care giver to my children, I also am a running coach for moms. I coach a fall trail running team and also (and currently) coach a spring team. I have experience with helping moms recognize the tools they have in their lives to accomplish their running goals. I learn so much from being in this role for these women it is incredible.
I hope that I can be a resource for others on this team and I greatly look forward to seeing those that I know and meet the team members that I am being introduced to now. I am also looking forward to training for this race and aiming to obtain a PR at the finish line.
