CWD families include grandparents, and at Friends for Life, we have a special Grandparents Track just for you. The Grandparents Faculty will lead you through two days of exploration and sharing. You'll learn the basics about your grandchild's diabetes, about pumps and meters and the latest in diabetes gadgets and gizmos. Your sessions are just for grandparents.
Bruce and Rachele Baccaro have a combined total of 88 years at IBM working in various capacities from engineer to graphic design management and from secretary to capital financial management and are grandparents to five. Their oldest grandchild, Kyle, was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at age seven. Through Kyle and his mom, Julie, Bruce and Rachele were first introduced to CWD in 2006 and experienced FFL for the first time in 2007. They knew immediately that we wanted to be involved with FFL in some capacity, and were selected to be the 'lead Grandparents' for the first time at Friends for Life 2008. Bruce and Rachele now held lead the Grandparents Track at Friends for Life conferences. They reside in Newburgh, New York, close to their blended family of three children and five grandchildren.
Bruce Buckingham, M.D., is a Professor of Pediatric Endocrinology at Stanford Medical Center. His research interests have focused on continuous glucose monitoring in children. He is Principal Investigator at Stanford for DirecNet, an NIH sponsored multicenter study group which evaluates continuous glucose sensors in children. His current work focuses on the use of continuous glucose sensors in real-time, and the development of a closed-loop. These efforts are being funded by the JDRF and NIH and are currently focused on preventing nocturnal hypoglycemia and rapidly restoring metabolic control at the onset of diabetes.
Richard Rubin, Ph.D., C.D.E., Psychologist, past president of the American Diabetes Association, and Professor in Medicine and Pediatrics, Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, Baltimore, Maryland. Author of Psyching Out Diabetes and Sweet Kids, Optimal Pumping, and 101 Tips for Coping with Diabetes, Dr. Rubin is Stefan Rubin's father. Stefan is also on the conference faculty and is a co-author of Optimal Pumping and 101 Tips for Coping with Diabetes. Dr. Rubin is a sought after speaker for both professionals and people living with diabetes. He speaks with authority and warmth on the human side of diabetes.
Janet Schneeman, RNMED, CDE, is currently a certified diabetes educator and clinical coordinator for the Mary Bridge Children's Health Center Diabetes Clinic, where she has worked for the last eleven years. She has 23 years experience as a certified diabetes educator working in multiple practice settings including adult health, pediatrics, program development and consultation. Janet asserts that even with 23 years of CDE experience, she has learned the most about diabetes by being the mom of a teen with type 1. Janet's favorite activities include drinking coffee, boating and fair weather gardening. She is well-known for her sense of humor, and helping families feel better about a diagnosis of type 1 diabetes. Janet has attended four Friends for Life conferences in Orlando, and looks forward to being staff this year. She lives in Gig Harbor, Washington, with her husband and two children.
Heather Speer, MPH, CCRC, CDE, is a CWD mom and CDE who has worked tirelessly for the last 20 years with thousands of families who have children with type 1 diabetes. She has served as coordinator of the PADRE Foundation's Fashion Show, Golf Tournament, Teen Surf and Snowboard Camps and Family Social events. She has developed education and support programs for kids with diabetes and their families. Heather instituted an emergency kit program for all newly diagnosed children at Children's Hospital Orange County when her daughter Stephanie was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at age three in 1990. Heather joined the CWD Ask the Diabetes Team in 1996. She lives with her husband Steve in Newport Beach, California and continues to work with children and families at CHOC. At Friends for Life, Heather is part of the Grandparents' Faculty.
