Saturday brought a new event to Friends for Life: CWD Family Day at the Coronado Springs Resort, sponsored by Eli Lilly and Company. The objective of the day was to offer an alternative to spending a very hot day in the theme park, and to keep families together in a relaxed and fun environment with lots of activities spread throughout the day.
Despite the fact that the program read "7:30," the day really started at 9:00 (well, staff were having coffee at 7:30) with bike rentals, followed shortly by the beginning of the First Annual CWD Scavenger Hunt. Jen Hanson and Lauren Lanning did an amazing job of creating the Scavenger Hunt questions, and it was very challenging! Seventy-five teams participated, and there were five $100 Disney Dollar grand prize winners. At 11:30, families lined up to attend the CWD Backyard BBQ Lunch, a three-hour character lunch experience for the kids featuring Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse, Chip and Dale, Goofy, Donald Duck, and Woody and Jessie. The character meet-n-greets were continuous for three hours, so all of the children (and lots of adults) got to meet the Disney characters and have opportunities for photos and autographs. When 2:30 rolled around, all of the characters and children were on the dance floor together – memories of a lifetime.
The Family Day festivities continued with fun, games, and music at the Dig Site swimming pool. Jim Vail led the CWD version of synchronized swimming, while others enjoyed the additional pool games and nearby sand volleyball.
The day was definitely a success, and we hope to offer this again the next time we are at Disney's Coronado Springs Resort (2013)!
