CWD families include grandparents, and at Friends for Life, we have a special Grandparents Track just for you. The Grandparents Faculty will lead you through two days of exploration and sharing. You'll learn the basics about your grandchild's diabetes, about pumps and meters and the latest in diabetes gadgets and gizmos. Your sessions are just for grandparents.

Bruce and Rachele Baccaro have a combined total of 94 years at IBM working in various capacities from engineer to graphic design management and from secretary to capital financial management and are grandparents to five. Their oldest grandchild, Kyle, was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at age seven. Kyle's sister, Emily, 16, was dx'd in November 2012. Through Kyle and his mom, Julie, Bruce and Rachele were first introduced to CWD in 2006 and experienced FFL for the first time in 2007. They knew immediately that they wanted to be involved with FFL in some capacity, and were selected to be the 'lead Grandparents' for the first time at Friends for Life 2008. Bruce and Rachele now help lead the Grandparents Track at Friends for Life conferences. They reside in Newburgh, New York, close to their blended family of three children and five grandchildren.

Julie Baccaro is mom to Emily, age 16, and Kyle, age 18. Kyle was diagnosed in 2001 at the age of 7, and he has been pumping since they returned from attending their first FFL Conference in 2006. Julie devotes considerable volunteer time as coordinator of a youth community outreach program and as coordinator of youth mission trips to Appalachia. She is also director of a youth run soup kitchen program and works with homeless families and youth at risk. In 2011, Julie assisted with the grandparent's program at FFL and provided significant one-on-one time with the alternate caregiver participants effectually providing a "generational link." Julie is employed by a major accounting firm in Manhattan, NY and resides in Newburgh, NY with Kyle and Emily.

Diana M. Naranjo, PhD, is a clinical psychologist and researcher at the University of California San Francisco’s Madison Center for Pediatric Diabetes. As a trained pediatric and adult psychologist working in behavioral medicine, Dr. Naranjo focuses on the psychosocial needs of patients and families with diabetes. Currently, she is working on developing a transition program within the Madison Center for adolescents and young adults with type 1 diabetes as they transition from pediatric to adult health care. Furthermore, as a Latino-American and fluent in Spanish, much of her clinical work focuses on bridging the health-care gap for underserved ethnic minority patients with type 1 diabetes.
