Healthy Eyes for Kids
Presenter: Paul ChousDr. Chous is an optometrist who has written an excellent book about how a person's eyes work and what can happen if someone has a disease such as diabetes or doesn't take good care of their eyes. Dr. Chous will spend an hour talking to kids (on a kids level) about how vision happens - what can go right and what can go wrong with anyone's eyes... not just people with diabetes. Dr. Chous will also tell the kids about retinal scanning, how the test is done, what the doctors are looking for when they do one... Please note that retinal screening will be available during the conference, so this is a great session to help your child understand why the test is performed.12:00 noon - 1:30 p.m. Box lunches in the tent outdoors
1:30 p.m. - 2:45 p.m.
A Bowl of Mashed Potatoes
Presenters: Linda Cooper, Lianna StrosterThis is your chance to get down and dirty with a big bowl of mashed potatoes (among other things)! Exactly what IS a portion size and how does that compare with what we usually eat? We'll talk about (and play with) some fun foods, how to make sure we're eating real-people portions, and what happens when we super-size our food. This session is sponsored by Animas Corporation.2:45 - 3:15 p.m. Snack Break in the Ballroom Circle outdoors
3:15 - 4:30 p.m.
What Are Your Parents So Scared About?
Presenters: Natalie Bellini, Craig Crease, Melissa RingleyComplications. You've probably heard this word before, and maybe you're not sure what people are talking about when they use it in the same sentence with 'diabetes.' The truth is, complications do happen to some people with diabetes, and they are more likely to happen if you don't take care of yourself and keep your blood glucose levels in range. Natalie and Craig (who both grew up with diabetes themselves and are very healthy adults) want you to understand why you need to be careful and take charge now, when you're a kid. This information will be presented on an appropriate level for school-aged kids. Parents are welcome to attend, but please give the kids elbow room to talk!Discussion Group for School-Age Siblings
Facilitators: Carolyn Billetdeaux, Richard RubinThis discussion group is a chance for those of you who are school-age siblings of a brother or sister with diabetes to discuss what's on your mind. You can talk about anything you want. Carolyn (who is the 16 year old sister of Sam and doesn't have diabetes) will start the conversation; there's a lot to fit into an hour!
