Friends for Life: LA 2004 - Saturday
Some walked up the hill, and some took the shuttle… but nearly everyone headed to Universal Studios on Saturday morning for the CWD Foundation Benefit Day, sponsored by Abbott Diabetes Care.
The day was hot and a bit muggy, so CWD set up a home base by the new Revenge of the Mummy attraction, and volunteers watched over insulin pumps, backpacks, and souvenirs while families and kids went on the ride. It was a bustling spot in the park, even more so as the day grew hotter and the CWD umbrellas provided shade!
At 6:00 p.m., everyone gathered for dinner and fun at the Globe Theater and Coke Soak areas. The BBQ dinner was delicious, and the DJ inside the Globe Theater had the kids and adults in absolute stitches with games and music. Outside at the Coke Soak, the teen group and quite a few families enjoyed the sunset, the breeze, some great music, and the cooling temperatures while munching on BBQ goodies. Beetlejuice, Spiderman, and Groucho visited the group outdoors, while Shrek and several other characters visited the younger kids inside the theater.
Dave Gibbs received the "Unexpected Hero" award for his quick thinking earlier in the conference. Dave saw a child and mom struggling in the pool and jumped in, clothes and all, to help them to the side. In Dave's honor, CWD will present the "Unexpected Hero" award each year at the Friends for Life conference to honor someone who helped to make a difference.
All in all, a most fabulous day, made all the better because the proceeds benefit the CWD Foundation! Many thanks to Abbott Diabetes Care for sponsoring this day, and to all of the families who participated!
