Defining a Healthy Life

If asked to define our hopes for the future, many of us would say, "I want my child and my family to live a healthy life." Well, what exactly is a healthy life? Eating well? Exercising every day? Exercising every week? Testing blood sugars 3 times a day? Or 10 times a day? Laughing? Talking? How do you determine whether your lifestyle is healthy? Join Betty Brackenridge for an entertaining - and sometimes introspective - discussion about what we do, why we do it, and whether or not it's good for us!

Diabetes Research Institute Update: Turning Research Into Reality
Presenter: Luca Inverardi and Ken Bernstein

More progress has been made in islet transplantation in the last three years than in the last three decades. With dozens of patients now living insulin free and many exciting breakthroughs on the horizon, scientists from the Diabetes Research Institute are turning research into reality for millions of people with diabetes. Much of the work underway at the DRI is aimed at overcoming the challenges that remain before islet transplantation can move toward widespread use in both adults and children. These include eliminating the need for potentially harmful anti-rejection drugs, and increasing the supply of islets through sources such as stem cells and tissue from other species.

Insulin Pump Technology
Presenter: Rhall Pope

Almost as quickly as you can read about insulin pumps, the technology is changing. Pumps from 5 years ago seem obsolete compared to those with newer functions, capabilities, and yes, bells and whistles! This session will explore the cutting-edge technology that is being developed in the field of insulin pumping... the discussion is not specific to any one brand of insulin pump, but rather focuses on the emerging technology that will ultimately benefit all pump users.

Choosing the Right Infusion Set
Presenter: Natalie Bellini

One of the most daunting tasks a new pumper (or parent of a pumper) faces is choosing an infusion set. There are so many choices! None of them are wrong, but one of them is probably 'right' for you and your child. Do you want 90 degree insertion or angled? 9mm cannula or 6mm? Do you want to use an insertion device or put the needle in by hand? Where are you going to wear the set? Belly? Bottom? Thigh? Are you allergic to sticky tape? Do you sweat a lot? So many questions! Let Natalie help you sort through them.

Carb Counting 101
Presenter: Linda Cooper

This is a great session for people who are new to diabetes management, and it's a great refresher for those of us who just need to hear the basics once again. Counting carbohydrates is the foundation of excellent diabetes care. Learn the fundamentals of carb-counting, the reasons behind them, and feel free to bring your questions!

Oral Medications in Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes
Presenter: Kim Kelly

There are many, many oral medications on the pharmacy shelves that claim to help in lowering blood glucose levels and increasing one's sensitivity to insulin. Join Pharmacist Kim Kelly in a discussion of the most common diabetes pharmaceuticals, what they can and can't do, and what role they play in the management of type 1 and type 2 diabetes. Bring your questions!

Diabetes Overwhelmus for the Newly Diagnosed
Presenter: Richard Rubin

The emotional side of diabetes is often overlooked, but it's so important because many people, particularly those families newly-diagnosed, suffer from "diabetes overwhelmus." They are simply overwhelmed by the day-to-day demands of diabetes. Feeling overwhelmed makes it almost impossible to take good care of your diabetes. This session presents ways to prevent or overcome diabetes overwhelmus and is applicable whether you are a person with diabetes, a family member experiencing "secondary" diabetes overwhelmus, or a health care professional trying to make sense of it all.

Beam Me Up Scotty: The Future of Blood Glucose Monitoring
Panel: Jeff Hitchcock, Bruce Buckingham, Ben Feldman, John Mastrototaro, Audrey Finkelstein

We've all seen science fiction shows in which the doctor waves a magic wand over a patient and measures all their vital signs. How close to that are we in blood glucose monitoring? This panel of speakers will talk about what exists today in the marketplace, what will soon be available, and what is still in the research labs.

Advanced Carb Counting
Presenter: Linda Cooper

This session will explore more advanced carb counting techniques and strategies. It is not necessary that you attend Carb Counting 101 earlier in the day, but you should have a solid understanding of carb counting to get the most out of this session.

The Parental Juggling Act
Panel: Michelle Rago, Ron Boxall, Lauren Lanning, Sonia Cooper, Lee Shekter, Tom Karlya

How do they do it? There are some parents who seem to get everything done, have everyone fed and wearing clean clothing, the house is clean, and they never forget anything. They make it to the endo appointments, they make it to Brownies and the basketball games. And they work full time jobs. Some of them are single parents to boot. So... maybe they will share their juggling techniques?

Introduction to Pumping Insulin
Presenter: John Walsh

Are you thinking about changing from multiple daily injections to an insulin pump? Find out the basics about pumping in this informative session. Insulin pump terminology and the "how-to's" of pumping will be discussed, and different models of insulin pumps will be displayed. You might want to consider a saline pump start offered by the different pump companies at the conference. Refer to the main conference page for more information!

Test Values: What Do They Mean?
Presenter: Kim Kelly

At least once yearly, most children with diabetes have some pretty hefty bloodwork done. What comes back to the doctor is usually a long list of numeric values that indicate in great detail lots of things about the health of your child and the status of the diabetes. What are these tests, and what do the numbers mean? Join Kim Kelly for some very understandable explanations, and be well-prepared for your child's next annual lab visit.

What Are Your Kids Worried About?
Presenter: Natalie Bellini

If your kids could always truly tell you what they think and how they feel about diabetes, what would they say? What do kids worry about the most? The answers may surprise you. Join Natalie Bellini - who once was a kid with diabetes - for a discussion from the kids' perspective. Natalie will also be leading sessions with kids and teens entitled "What Are Your Parents Worried About" (yes, she is now a parent).

Healthy Eyes
Presenter: Paul Chous

Everyone wants healthy eyes and good vision. Join Dr. Chous for a discussion of how our eyes work, how their function might be affected by diabetes, and how we can all maximize our vision whether we have diabetes or not. Also, make sure you stop by the retinal scanning station during the conference to get a first-hand look at the structure of your very own retinas!

Single Parents Discussion Group
Facilitator: Betty Brackenridge

Single parents have a special set of challenges, including carrying all the responsibility for caring for a child with type 1 diabetes on just one set of shoulders. Join Betty Brackenridge for some candid discussion, and be ready to share your ideas of what works for your family, what doesn't, and your creative thoughts on the future.
