Orlando 2000 -- Letting Kids be Kids

Day Three -- Saturday, June 10, 2000

Castle Day Three of Orlando 2000 found families at Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom. After breakfast on our own, we headed over to the Magic Kingdom. Some families arrived early, while others needed some extra sleep from the festivities of Sea World and late-night swimming at the pool.

The weather was wonderful and the early morning crowds were small. Many families accepted Disney's offer of special assistance passes to cut down on the time spent waiting in lines. With the heat, many younger kids ran the risk of going low, so being able to get onto the attractions quickly was a real benefit.

Even though there were no scheduled meetings for the entire group, you couldn't walk anywhere in the park without finding another Children with Diabetes family. Many parents reported being asked by strangers about diabetes, some reporting symptoms in relatives and others just curious about who we were and what we were about. It felt great to be able to share Children with Diabetes and our friendship with everyone we met.

Dining at Disney can be a treat. Some families enjoyed a character meal for lunch, a favorite of kids and parents. For some, dinner at the Polynesian Resort included serenading by a cast member and coconut broom races.

The Dragon After a full day in the park, a few families were treated to VIP seats for the Main Street Electrical Parade, Disney's night time extravaganza. Kids and parents enjoyed the up close view of the parade and interaction with the characters.

Pete's Dragon reminded some of us about the other dragon in our lives -- the diabetes dragon -- which we worked to tame with the help of the many new friends we met at Orlando 2000.

Mark your calendars now for next year's Disney 2001, to be held at the Walt Disney World Coronado Springs Resort in Orlando, Florida, from July 18 to 22, 2001. We're planning not only fun and friends, but also educational sessions for kids, parents, adults, and health care professionals. Watch the web site for pre-registration information in the coming weeks.
