Special Guest - Harry Mahaffey

Harry Mahaffey is the 2005 Under-14 U.S. Champion in saber fencing. He is also a member of the 2006 United States Fencing Association Cadet (Under-16) World Championship team, competing in South Korea. During the past season, Harry has fenced in the U.S., as well as Poland, Hungary, Albuquerque, Italy, and Germany. Harry also won a silver medal at the U.S. Junior Olympics in Hartford, Connecticut. Harry began fencing in 1998 at the age of eight, and was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes on April 28, 2003. He had just had his best fencing performance up until that time, a top-8 finish in the national 14-and-under division, and he and his family resolved that diabetes would not keep him from achieving his goals in fencing and in life. In fact, Harry feels strongly that the discipline, knowledge, and body-awareness that he has gained from diabetes has actually helped him become a better athlete and competitor. Harry attends Le Lycée Français de Los Angeles, where French is the language of instruction. He will be a senior in 2006-2007, and plans to apply to college at Stanford, Columbia, NYU, and The Ohio State University. He lives in Los Angeles with his mother, Diane, and his younger sister, Siobhan, and fences at the Los Angeles International Fencing Center.
