See you there!

CWD staff will have glucose meters available to check blood sugars in an emergency. Your child may bring their own meter to do blood glucose checks. CWD will not be responsible for lost kits, so please make sure your child's name and your phone number are in the kit.

9:00 - 10:15 a.m.

Tweener Icebreaker
Tweener Staff: Melissa Ringley, Kim Kelly
Location: Yellowtail Ballroom

Join Kim and Melissa for some very fun ice-breaker activities… and begin the process of learning the names and faces of the other 200 kids in your tweener group this year!

10:15 - 10:45 a.m. Snack Break by Oceans Ballroom, sponsored by Medtronic MiniMed

10:45 - 11:45

Siblings Discussion Group
Facilitators: Kathryn Hitchcock, Richard Rubin
Location: Damselfish Breakout Room

In 2005, this session was dropped from the schedule, and boy did we hear about it! This is the opportunity for brothers and sisters of kids with type 1 diabetes to speak their mind. What are your challenges? Your worries? What works in your family, and what doesn't? What would you like to change? Join your buddies for some great discussion!

Tweeners with Diabetes Discussion
Facilitators: Nathaniel Clark, Sam Billetdeaux, Kelsey Martin
Location: Yellowtail Ballroom

Tweeners - both girls and boys - have a lot to deal with. You have questions about growing up, your health, moving to middle school, and all the social 'stuff' around that. Sam and Kelsey are two CWD teens who have been down that road and understand what you are going through. Come meet them for some great conversation. Be prepared with your thoughts on one of the following: What is the scariest thing for you about diabetes? What is the funniest thing that has ever happened in your house around diabetes? Who is your best friend and why?

12:30 noon - 1:30 p.m. Lunch Buffet in the Crystal Ballroom and Atrium, sponsored by Lilly

1:30 - 2:45 p.m.

Sports Central
Sports VIPs: Chris Dudley, Jay Leeuwenburg
Location: Sports Central (Oceans Ballroom 1-4), meet in Yellowtail

NBA star Chris Dudley and NFL star Jay Leeuwenburg will spend this 75 minutes with kids who are interested in getting in some basketball and football practice with the pros. Note that playing time will vary according to how many kids are interested in each sport. DESA volunteers will assist with the sports activities. Please make sure you are wearing appropriate clothing and footwear to play sports!

Marissa's Trip to Colombia
Presenter: Marissa Hitchcock
Location: Yellowtail Breakout Room

Marissa – a college freshman with type 1 diabetes – had the incredible opportunity to spend 10 days in Colombia in December 2005. Her hosts were the Escobars, a CWD family who lives in Cali and who extended their warmth and hospitality to Marissa so that she could learn about diabetes in their country. Join Marissa for the story of her travels and the very wonderful people she met.

2:45 - 3:15 p.m. Snack Break by the Oceans Ballroom, sponsored by Medtronic MiniMed

3:15 - 4:30 p.m.

Advocacy – It's Up To You!
Presenter: Crystal Jackson
Location: Bluegill Breakout Room

Lots of tweeners are interested in 'becoming an advocate,' and they simply don't know how to get started… or they don't realize that they already are participating in advocacy activities and could use some advice about how to become more visible or have a louder voice. CWD mom and ADA advocacy expert Crystal Jackson joins with ADA's National Youth Ambassador for a discussion about how you can be more involved in advocacy. Bring your ideas and experiences. This is time to share.

It's Rough at Middle School: Knowing the Limits
Presenter: Joe Solowiejcyzk
Location: Yellowtail Ballroom

Middle school can be a difficult time for some kids – and a breeze for others. It presents some special challenges to kids such as multiple teachers, new classmates, perhaps taking a different bus or walking a different route. And it definitely gives kids a much different type of schedule and a much larger choice of friends than in elementary school. Join family counselor Joe for a discussion of these challenges and how you are doing with them.

Dealing with Tweener Stress
Presenter: Bob Bulgarelli
Location: Anemone Breakout Room

Stress can affect our bodies in so many ways. And kids most definitely do have stress! Dr. Bob has some wonderful ways of helping kids deal with stress. Join him (and find out why the teens love working with Dr. Bob as well!).

In My Shoes: Role Playing
Presenter: Scott Scolnick
Location: Damselfish Breakout Room

You're supposed to go to a friend's sleepover, and your blood sugar is 300 and holding steady. Your older brother has plans to go to a hockey game with Dad, and Mom is visiting relatives out of town. Oh no! Dad doesn't feel comfortable letting you spend the night with a blood sugar that is persistent about not coming down, but you really want to go. So ... what happens? Hmmm. Anything can. It's time to role-play. Join Scott for this very fun – and very eye-opening session!
