Doug Burns is an internationally-respected fitness consultant, record-holding athlete and diabetes advocate. Doug will be one of the featured athletes of Sports Central and will participate on the Athletes’ Panel on Friday morning. Kids and parents may also visit Doug at the Abbott Diabetes Care booth in the exhibit hall.
Doug has had type 1 diabetes since the age of seven. Frequent hospitalizations left him weak, underweight and frequently picked on. Often referred to in school as the "Bag of Bones," he thought he was destined to a life of misery. A picture of a muscle-massive Sampson with a lion in a headlock pointed Doug to the world of strength where he used various odds and ends to fashion a Tom Sawyer gym in the family's backyard home.
Dedication to pushups, sit-ups and river swims helped Doug try his hand in strength contests. He placed dead last in the first but went on to win six strength championships setting State, regional and American records along the way. He shifted his focus to fitness world where he's won the Mr. Southern States, Mr. California, Mr. USA and Mr. Universe titles.
Doug is making a comeback in the athletic world after a serious setback seemed to end his competitive career. He is using this opportunity to talk about overcoming some astonishing challenges he's had to face and overcome.
Doug works as a professional trainer and health advisor for various companies including Abbott Laboratories, Johnson & Johnson and Pfizer. He's served on the board of directors for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, American Diabetes Association and Father of the Year. Doug is the very proud father of three children who have all helped at past CWD events and have given him reason to succeed again.
