Diagnosed January 1, 2003

Kaylan was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in January 2003 when she was seven years old. She does not let diabetes keep her from having fun with her friends, family, and animals. She loves animals -- all animals! She loves catching frogs and lizards with her brother, Kyle. Among her pets are dogs, cats, ferrets, guinea pigs, chickens, ducks, rabbits, and a goat. Her mother helps her to take good care of all her pets.

She loves nature. She spends a week annually camping with her daddy, granddaddy, and brother when they all go on a big-game hunting trip in Texas. She hikes with her friends and plays summer softball.

Kaylan is not only hoping and praying for a cure for type 1 diabetes, she actively raises money for research. She and her team have participated in an American Diabetes Association walk and a Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation walk. Until a cure can be found, Kaylan refuses to let diabetes take the joy out of her life.

She and her grandmother had fun as they worked together on Kaylan's quilt square. Kaylan decided that she wanted the quilt to show all of the things she loves -- family, friends, and animals. She also wanted it to show some of the activities she enjoys.
