Matthew Ryszkowski
Diagnosed January 29, 2001

Matthew Ryszkowski was diagnosed with diabetes (type 1) on January 29, 2001 at the age of one year and 3 months. His mother thought that he was having an asthma attack when she took him to the hospital emergency room, and he was immediately air evacuated to Phoenix Children's Hospital. He had been sick for some time, and his distressed mother had taken him to the doctor repeatedly knowing that his behavior and manner were not normal, but time and again she was told that he had the flu and was sent home. Asthma is in the family, and so when he started having difficulty breathing she thought it was an attack brought on by the prolonged "flu" and knew in her heart something was terribly wrong. Her instincts were right and her persistence saved his life! The family was in shock with no known diabetes of this type in the family, and no children with this problem, so it was the last thing that had crossed anyone's mind.

Matthew lives in El Mirage, Arizona with his parents (Megan and Eric) and a little brother Nicholas. He is a healthy and active two-year old in every other aspect except for the three different types of insulin he must take daily. He also has an extended family with Aunts, Uncles, Cousins, and Grandparents in the Valley of the Sun who all love him and hope for a cure.

The quilt panel is the loving work of Matthew's maternal grandmother, Bonny Walter.
