Colorado Teen Adventure
May 19-21, 2006
Renaissance Boulder Suites Hotel at Flatiron
Boulder, Colorado
CWD invites you to participate in the very first CWD Teen Adventure
What are CWD Teen Adventures?
The CWD Teen Adventure events are intended to teach life skills and diabetes management skills in a context of travel, outdoor adventure, and cultural activities. Teens (ages 13-18) attend the Adventure along with a parent, however the adventure itself (such as hiking, biking, or rafting) is just designed for teen participants and a few adult staff. Parents are free to explore the area, sightsee, shop, and relax during the day while the teens participate in the Adventure, but they must be back at the hotel with their teen by dinner. Most of all, the CWD Teen Adventure program will be fun and exciting, and will continue to offer opportunities for teens and their parents to make – and nurture - friends for life! Why Colorado?
Last Fall, CWD ran an online survey, asking parents and kids what types of activities they might like to see in an Adventures program. Hiking, biking, and rafting were at the top of the list. Colorado is a wonderful venue for these activities, providing the weather cooperates! So, the first CWD Teen Adventure will be held in the Rocky Mountain State! This is a sports- and fun-filled weekend for teens at the Renaissance Boulder Suites Hotel at FlatIron. Depending on the weather, teens may hike, bike, swim, skate, bowl, go rafting, or even snow tubing if the weather turns unseasonably white! CWD Teen Coordinator Natalie Bellini will lead this program. The group will be limited to 30 teen participants. Please note that a parent must stay on site at the hotel with the teen at night. The Venue
This Renaissances Suites Hotel sits just outside Boulder, adjacent to the beautiful Flatiron Mountains. It is located approximately 25 minutes from the Denver International Airport, and a shuttle is available to the hotel, although you may want to rent a vehicle to explore this gorgeous part of the country! The hotel features an indoor pool, whirlpool, and sundeck, as well as a wonderful 24 hour fitness center and literally dozens of outdoor activities right nearby. CWD has reserved king and one bedroom suites for this event. Each room has a king bed and a sleeper sofa. Rooms are $109 per night plus tax. To reserve a room, call the hotel directly at 1-800-HOTELS-1, and make sure to state that you are with the Children with Diabetes group. We have only reserved a very limited number of rooms, so if you plan to join us, please make your reservations early (note: these rooms otherwise reserve for $209/night).What Will the Teens Learn?
Aside from having fun, which we always do, the teens will have some discussion and planning/educational sessions with Natalie and the other CWD staff. Based upon what outdoor activities the group decides to do (which in turn is based upon the weather), we will have pre-activity discussion about how to manage diabetes (supplies, basal modification for pumpers, potential challenges, emergencies) during the activities. And – as the day progresses and learning opportunities come up (which they always do) – we will stop, discuss, integrate that information into what we already know – and move on. At the end of the day, Natalie and staff will recap what the day entailed -- what was learned, what was challenging, what was easy, and how we might do differently next time. That's what managing diabetes is all about as a teen anyway, right? What Does This Cost?
The cost for the program is $75 per teen (plus hotel and transportation to the event). This includes snacks on Friday evening, breakfast and lunch on Saturday and Sunday, and the cost of admission or rental fees for the daytime activities which the group decides to do. Teens and their parents are on their own for dinner – although it would certainly be fun for the group to go out together on Saturday night. We will plan that on site for those interested. Other family members are welcome to come and stay at the hotel and otherwise enjoy the area's activities ... this particular event, however, is just staffed by CWD for the teens.Registration Form
