Camp Kakhamela is fun. It has swimming, canoeing, archery, kayaking, sailing, hiking, campouts, arts and crafts, indoor recreation, and field sports ... all the activities kids love! It takes place at YMCA's Camp Elphinstone on the beautiful Sunshine Coast near Gibsons, BC.
Young people from all over BC live in cabins with other campers the same age and gender. They share responsibilities with their cabinmates, plan daily activities and have fun.
The camp is unique because it provides something extra to 7-17 year olds with diabetes -that all-important feeling of belonging! That's because other campers have diabetes. Qualified supervision from endocrinologists, nurses, and dietitians helps campers learn how to live better with diabetes.

Camp with the Canadian Diabetes Association
For nearly 50 years, the Canadian Diabetes Association (CDA) has been Canada's response to diabetes. The non-profit health organization promotes the health of Canadians through diabetes research, education, service and advocacy. The purpose of the camping program is to offer children and youth with diabetes the opportunity to fully enjoy a residential camping experience. Under qualified supervision, campers improve their understanding of living with diabetes.
Going to summer camp is one of the most exciting and educational experiences in the lives of young people. Camp enables them to enhance their self-confidence, establish friendships, and learn about themselves.
At Camp Kakhamela, campers master new skills and discover the great outdoors. They have the chance to exercise a little independence and to develop physically and mentally.
Summer camp is a valuable experience for any young person, and those with diabetes are no exception.
