Welcome to Chesapeake Health's Diabetes Camping Program!

Kids with diabetes have enjoyed great times at Chesapeake Health's Diabetes Camps for more than 20 years. The camping program started in 1986 with a week-long day camp for children and teens with Type 1 diabetes. In 1995, we partnered with the Lions of District 24-D to start our first weekend-long overnight event.

The experiences from our camping program will benefit campers for years to come. Chesapeake Health's Diabetes Camps will:

  • provide a safe and stimulating learning experience for campers
  • teach children and teens how to manage their diabetes while maintaining an active lifestyle
  • provide the opportunity to meet other kids with diabetes for friendship and peer support
  • promote self-confidence and independence which is needed to deal with the challenges of diabetes

THE STAFF
The camp's medical staff includes physicians, registered nurses, registered dietitians, certified diabetes educators, and exercise physiologists. These diabetes specialists help campers learn about managing their diabetes while away from home.

Karate instructors, activities directors, pharmacists, podiatrists, opthamologists, art instructors, aerobic instructors, and counselors complete the staff. Each staff member is dedicated to making camp a safe and fun-filled learning experience.

VACATION DIABETES CAMP
Dates: July 31 - August 3, 2006
Times: 9am to 4pm Daily
Location: Lifestyle Center at Chesapeake General Hospital, Chesapeake, Virginia

Fees: $160 per camper. Lunch and snacks plus all diabetes supplies are provided. Camp participants will be chaperoned by diabetes health professionals and will experience how to manage their diabetes at a theme park. Money will be needed for lunch and snacks that day.

Thousands of children with diabetes have participated in Vacation Diabetes Camp over the past 20 years. It is the only camp of its kind for children and teens with diabetes in southeastern Virginia.

"The goal of the camp is to encourage children with diabetes to network with other children their own age who also have diabetes," notes Nancy Clark, a certified diabetes educator who diabetes program coordinator at the Lifestyle Center. "Young people are motivated by their peers. At camp, for instance, many campers decide to start giving their own injections, because they see that their new friends are doing it."

The camp also includes classes on diabetes management from certified diabetes educators, craft sessions, a field trip and other activities that emphasize fun ways to learn about diabetes.

A limited number of scholarships are available. Those interested in applying must submit a letter of explanation with their applications.
