Diabetes Youth Services'
Big Shots Resident Camp
At Camp Libbey in Defiance, Ohio
WHAT'S IT ABOUT?
Big Shots Resident Camp is the only camp of its kind in northwest Ohio to offer a week-long outdoor adventure for pre-teen and teenage children with diabetes. Campers with diabetes are welcome to share the week with friends or family members who may not have diabetes and care about someone who does. The camp provides a valuable opportunity for all youths to experience each other's uniqueness.
The camp, sponsored by the Diabetes Youth Services at Mercy Hospital, is held at Camp Libbey in Defiance, Ohio, and provides a broad range of activities. Campers can enjoy the "Exer-trail," swimming in the half olympic-sized pool, horseback riding, making quality crafts, and hiking on the more than 300 acres of forest and fields along the Maumee River. Educational sessions are built into the program, promoting independence away from home.
Big Shots Resident Camp helps your child learn to manage his/her diabetes independently, while being supervised by Certified Diabetes Educators. Positive experiences like the DYP Camp help give your child the confidence to attend other recreational and sports camps.
Nurses, dietitians and young adults who have diabetes will complement the camp counselors, nurses and recreation staff provided by Camp Libbey.
