Facilities

This year's camping activities will be held at beautiful Friendly Pines Camp, located in the tall pines of the Bradshaw Mountains, six miles outside of Prescott, with our Teen Adventure Program nearby at Bradshaw Pines. The facilities include cabin villages accommodating various age groups for boys and girls, a dining hall that maintains a "family feeling," a heated swimming pool, a lake for fishing and water sports, shooting and archery ranges, tennis and basketball courts and a challenge course. Campers will enjoy campfires and overnight campouts.

Camp Dates: June 9-16, 2007

Kids at Camp Purpose

As with any camping experience, our camp for children with diabetes will provide fun and adventure, companionship and the opportunity to make new friends and learn new skills in outdoor living. The aim of Camp AZDA is to provide the child or teen with diabetes a memorable recreational and educational experience. The main goal of the camp is to have fun! Campers will have the opportunity to learn more about monitoring, insulin administration, meal planning and exercise.

Age

Camp AZDA is co-educational with the Main Camp having a program for youngsters eight to twelve years and a Young Teen Program for adolescents aged 12 to 14 years. For those children around the age of 12, parental opinion as to which group is more appropriate for the child is welcome.

T.A.P. your potential in the Teen Adventure Program

We are pleased to continue to offer a more challenging program for older adolescents ages 14 to 16. The camp is situated in a secluded location near Friendly Pines Camp. Campers will live in small villages of platform tents in a more "primitive" camp setting. Many of the usual camp activities will remain available and more adventure-based activities such as rock climbing, longer trail rides, overnight campouts and a challenge course will be offered. Camper choice will guide many of the activity possibilities. Spaces will be limited and acceptance into T.A.P. will not be automatic.

Activities

Camper Daily activities include: swimming, tennis, Western riding, water boarding, wagon rides, archery, riflery, fishing and hiking. Many campers will be attending camp for the first time and will find their trip away from home to be exciting and adventurous.

Evening activities will include a dance, a carnival and many other surprises. Meals will include songfests with a professional camp musician. Teens will be able to take overnight trips and more challenging hikes and will have the opportunity for socializing in the evening at the Kiva.

Professional Diabetes Supervision and Management

Campers and Counselor The medical staff is comprised of physicians specializing in diabetes care, diabetes nurse educators, nurses and dietitians experienced in working with children and diabetes. On-site medical staff will evaluate each child's medical status, dietary intake and daily activities.

Dietitians have carefully planned meals to provide optimal camper appeal and nutritional quality.

The medical facility is large with infirmary space for sick children and teens.

Presence of a medical staff person in each cabin four times a day leads to productive "informal" diabetes teaching sessions. More formal sessions will be held for those who have special needs in diabetes education.

Register Early

Since there are more applications than spaces, acceptance will not be automatic. Any questions regarding Camp AZDA or financial aid can be answered by calling the American Diabetes Asssociation Office at 602-861-4731 or 888-342-2383 x7094.

Application

The fee for the camp session is $650 per child/teen and must accompany the application. Camp AZDA provides room, board, insulin and all medical supplies related to the camper's diabetes. All insulin will be purified human insulin of recombinant DNA origin unless otherwise specified by your physician.

Full payment must accompany the application unless other arrangements have been made. Full and partial camperships are available.

The number of camperships is limited. Campership information will accompany the application.

Prospective campers must have a pre-camp physical examination by their personal physician. The physician must complete the Attending Physician's Report form.

The Application and Physician Report Form must be completed in full and returned to:
