Camp Hickory Hill
Where You Call The Shots

There are approximately 80 camps for youth with diabetes children in North America. They are part of a great tradition of diabetes teaching, recreation and friendship. Camp Hickory Hill, located five miles northwest of Columbia, Missouri, is one of the premier camps in this group.

In operation since 1971, Camp Hickory Hill last year celebrated its 31st year of operation. We serve children and teens age 8 to 17 who have insulin-dependent diabetes. Our mission is to educate these boys, girls, young men and young women to manage and control their own diabetes in partnership with their families and health providers. The quality, length and productivity of their lives will depend largely upon how successfully they control and manage their diabetes.

Education
Our education program includes one hour of formal classroom training each day in such subjects as insulin administration, insulin reactions, glucose monitoring, diet, foot care, complications and the emotional aspects of living with diabetes. We reinforce the training 24 hours a day in all our activities at camp. We believe the best diabetes education consists of small doses of formal training and large doses of teaching by example and shared experiences.

Activities
But education does not get in the way of having a good time at Camp Hickory Hill. Activities include archery, arts and crafts, astronomy, boating, campfires and overnight camp outs, exploring our own cave, fishing, hiking and nature study, monocable (zip line), mudpit competition, ping pong, rappelling, riflery, skits, stories and songs, sports (including basketball, football, frisbee golf, soccer, softball, tennis and volleyball) and swimming in our Olympic style swimming pool. Every evening, we have an all-camp activity such as capture the flag, couples softball or kickball, camper-staff softball or kickball, scavenger hunt, counselor hunt, offsite trip for the camp dance (older session) or roller skating (younger session) or any of a number of other activities. We have a wide variety of activities to appeal to every interest.

Campsite
Our 77 acre camp property is in the foothills of the Ozarks. It is a gorgeous, mostly wooded site with our own lake, open fields for sports activities and challenging hills. Holton cave is located on our property and cave tours are arranged several times each camp session -- we are able to walk back in the cave over 600 yards standing. We have our own rappelling cliff on the property as well as our mono-cable (zip line). Our mudpit is a real favorite both camp sessions.

We sleep in cabins on bunk beds with real mattresses. Our bathrooms have showers with hot and cold water. Our camp is rustic, but not uncivilized.

2007 Camp Sessions
This year, we offer two camp sessions:

  • Session I
For young men and women age 13 to 17
    From June 10 - 17

Up to 16 of these campers age 15 to 17 are invited to stay for Session II as Counselors in Training (CITs). See the box on the right for more information.

  • Session II
For boys and girls age 8 to 12
    From June 24 - 30

Volunteer Staff
Our staff is almost entirely volunteer. We encourage anyone age 18 or over who is diabetic, has an interest in diabetes or wants to be part of a very special community to join our volunteer staff for this summer. We also encourage parents to volunteer for staff, as this experience presents a unique opportunity to learn an immense amount about diabetes, different control and management techniques and all the subjects covered in our education program. Camp Hickory Hill also provides opportunities for dietetic, nursing and medical students to gain in depth training and clinical experience in many aspects of diabetes management, strategy and control.

Our People
What makes Camp Hickory Hill so very special is its people. Many of our campers and staff return year after year. Many campers follow the natural progression from camper to CIT to staff member. The bonds that grow between our campers and staff are truly remarkable. We keep in touch throughout the year by phone, letter, e-mail and visits. Our people are our most precious asset at Camp Hickory Hill.

Safety and Medical
Safety of the campers entrusted to us is a responsibility we take very seriously. At least one licensed physician is on the camp property 24 hours a day. Just as parents often "look in" on their sons and daughters at night, our medical staff makes nighttime rounds to each cabin. The physicians have under their supervision registered nurses and registered dietitians. In the event of a serious emergency, our camp is only a few miles from the hospitals in Columbia.

If a camper has special medical or dietary needs in addition to diabetes, arrangements can be made with the camp medical director to accommodate those needs.

Non-Discrimination
Camp Hickory Hill does not discriminate in any way based on gender, race, color, religion, national origin, age or other protected class or status, except that:

  • All campers must have diabetes mellitus and take insulin.
  • Campers must be between ages 8 and 17.
  • Staff must meet minimum age requirements set by our Board of Directors.

Our camper attendance fee is set by a sliding scale based upon family income. However, no child or teen with diabetes has ever been turned away because of inability to pay the suggested fee.

Ownership & Operation
Although many know us as Camp Hickory Hill (or CHH), our official name is Central Missouri Diabetic Children's Camp, Inc. This not-for-profit tax exempt corporation was established by parents of diabetic children in 1972. The corporation is administered by a nine member Board of Directors. Not only do these members volunteer their time and expertise, so do the many individuals who assist us with maintenance of the property, construction of facilities and buildings and donation of supplies and equipment. On behalf of the campers, their parents, the Board of Directors, the staff and friends of Camp Hickory Hill, we extend our thanks to the many people and businesses whose generosity makes Camp Hickory Hill possible.

Camp Hickory Hill is a Columbia area United Way agency, and we wish to thank United Way for their support and for sharing with us the community's generosity. Camp Hickory Hill receives financial support from the city of Columbia, Missouri. Thanks to the donations from United Way, the city of Columbia, other agencies and many individuals and businesses, we are able to offer a camping experience to youth with diabetes regardless of ability to pay.

Camp Hickory Hill is accredited by the American Camping Association. We passed the rigorous triennial ACA visitation and review in July 2000. Camp Hickory Hill meets or exceeds all applicable ACA requirements and guidelines to ensure a safe and healthy camping experience.

CIT Program
Camp Hickory Hill takes great pride in its Counselor in Training (CIT) program. As its name suggests, this program is our training ground for future staff and it represents the future of Camp Hickory Hill.

To be eligible for the program, a camper must (1) be at least 15 years of age by the first day of Session II and (2) attend Session I as a camper that same year.

We select CITs based upon their performance as campers during Session I that year. Performance during prior year(s), whether good or bad, is rarely considered. CITs are the role models for our Session II campers, and we judge the fitness of applicants based upon leadership, respect, diabetes management, participation, team spirit and support of camp rules and the camp program demonstrated during Session I.

In our experience, excellent CITs can be quiet or hard charging, athletic or not, etc. No single trait and no pre-determined personality type govern. Indeed, a varied CIT cadre reflects the diversity and true strength of our camp.

If you will be 15 or older, chat with your parent(s) before you come to camp and decide whether staying on as a CIT is possible for you. If it is, we encourage you to distinguish yourself during Session I and apply to be a CIT.

If you are accepted, you will attend a CIT training program (either during the last two days of your camp session) and you will be at camp for all of Session II.

This is a very special program, run by gifted staff and featuring young men and women who are Camp Hickory Hill's hope for the future. We encourage you to consider being a CIT and wish you well if you are interested in this very, very special program.

If you are non-diabetic, will be age 15-17 before July 6, and would be interested in volunteering as a CIT, contact us further information.
