John
Warvel2008 Camping Session
Ages 7-15, June 8-14, 2008
Fees: $300, including $25 non-refundable depositCamp John Warvel is an American Diabetes Association resident camp for children with diabetes ages 7 through 15. Held at YMCA Camp Crosley in North Webster, Indiana, Camp Warvel provides a unique learning atmosphere for children to acquire the skills necessary to manage their disease. Sports, crafts, swimming, boating, and nature activities are offered.
WHY
The American Diabetes Association, Indiana Area, sponsors Camp John Warvel in order to provide an enjoyable, safe and educational out-of-doors experience for children with insulin-dependent diabetes. With an emphasis on fun, Camp Warvel offers a unique learning atmosphere for children to acquire (according to their developmental levels) new skills in caring for their diabetes. The camp experience instills confidence for the self-management of diabetes.
In addition to meeting the special medical, dietary, and educational needs of each child, camp offers exposure to peers who are facing similar situations with their diabetes. Positive attitudes toward coping with diabetes are nurtured through encouragement and example.
HOW
The general camp program is managed by counselors who are knowledgeable in camping and guidance skills. Camp John Warvel has a full-time medical staff of physicians, nurses and dietitians who provide 24-hour care for campers. Medical staff members receive special training in diabetes prior to camp. The constant presence of the medical staff allows the use of every "teachable moment" in dealing with a question or issue when it is most significant to the child.During the child's stay at camp, every effort is made to maintain stable blood sugars. In order to do this, all children are placed on an individualized meal plan for the purpose of carb counting. The Exchange List for Meal Planning, developed by the American Diabetes Association and the American Dietetic Association, as well as the nutritional product labeling will be the resources used for carb counting. Campers monitor blood sugar at least four times a day. Minor insulin adjustments may be necessary to achieve or maintain stable blood glucose levels. Any major change, however, is made only upon approval of the child's physician.
Every effort is made to maintain the home management program based on the information provided to the camp. At the close of camp, the child should return to his/her usual insulin dosage and diet, unless otherwise directed by their physician.

Any child age 7 through 15, with Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes may apply. All applications are considered on an individual basis in the order they are received.
