Site
Held at Camp Victory, a place for children with special needs, the HDYC is situated in north central Pennsylvania, near the village of Millville. This is a state-of-the-art facility with easy terrain, modern facilities, and beautiful grounds. Campers stay in cabins with home-like twin beds and toilet facilities. The spacious bathhouse is only steps away from where the campers sleep.

Diabetes Care
A well-equipped on-site medical facility is staffed with healthcare professionals. Physicians, nurses, insulin pump trainers, and dietitians live with the campers, 24 hours each day, and participate in the camp activities. Most diabetes medical supplies are furnished.

Campers are taught, under close medical supervision, to check their own blood glucose levels, administer their own insulin, and record all results. Meal plans, including snacks, are developed by a Registered Dietitian for each individual camper.

Education is an important part of the program. Campers are instructed daily, using "teachable moments." Certified Diabetes Educators, physicians, nurses, and dietitians use a team approach while working with the campers to develop diabetes management techniques.

Why Send My Child to the HDYC?
For over 28 years the HDYC has been successfully changing the lives of children with diabetes. Each year following camp, we receive letters explaining that campers have grown as a result of the camp. Many children learn to give their first insulin injection at camp, while others learn about the insulin pump. Some learn to count carbohydrates and others learn how to adjust their insulin levels according to their activity for the day.

The purpose of the HDYC is to provide a recreational experience for children with diabetes while providing expert guidance that encourages them to develop diabetes management skills and gain self-esteem. With the guidance of counselors, the medical staff, and other skilled staff, the campers mature through new and exciting experiences. The HDYC measures progress using a variety of evaluative tools. Goals of the HDYC are:

  • To enable campers to meet others with diabetes
  • To offer parents a break from the daily worries of raising a child with diabetes
  • To provide an enjoyable camp experience to the child with diabetes in a healthy environment away from home
  • To foster more independence by using better diabetes management skills
  • To teach children that living with diabetes is not a restrictive lifestyle
  • To enable children to interact with their healthcare providers in a non-clinical setting
