Why Attend the Weekend?
Because managing diabetes often requires a change in lifestyle, family support is needed. Many activities of daily living must be considered, including the food consumed, medication schedule, and activity level. Setebaid Services®, Inc., in cooperation with the Northeast Association of Diabetes Educators of Pennsylvania (NEADE), hosts this Weekend to serve the families of children with diabetes. The primary purpose of the weekend is to establish a network of support and assist families in coping with the daily struggles of managing diabetes.

Who Should Attend the Weekend?

  • Children with diabetes, ages 3-12
  • Parents, brothers, sisters, and other siblings
  • Grandparents, aunts, uncles, and other adult caregivers

    Resort Facilities
Split Rock Resort truly offers something for everyone. If you are ready for relaxation, take a dip in the pool, lounge in the whirlpool, schedule a massage, or catch a movie in the movie theater. If you prefer outdoor relaxation, take a hike and view the lake.

    Weekend activities include:

    • Silly Family Olympics
    • Saturday Evening Entertainment
    • Children's games
    • Adult diabetes education sessions

    Location
Split Rock Resort, located in the Poconos, is less than 1 1/2 hours from Philadelphia and less than 2 hours from New York City, yet is a world away in atmosphere. Less than 5 miles from the intersection of the Pennsylvania Turnpike's Northeast Extension and Interstate 80, it is easily accessible from a multitude of major interstates.

    Children's Activities
The weekend will be divided into tracts. There will be some periods where the entire family will be together, like meal times and bedtime. There will be other times when the children will be together at a game tract while the parents are in educational sessions. All children's tracts will be staffed by early childhood development teachers, trained in diabetes management.

    Adults Sessions
Parents and other adult care-givers will have numerous educational sessions to select from, including sick day management, insulin pump therapy, blood glucose monitoring and why it's important, dealing with diabetes in school, how to work with your child's teacher, and many other topics. Each session will be led by a healthcare professional or specialist in diabetes.

    Diabetes Care at the Weekend

    • Meal plans, including snacks, were considered when this event was planned and the menu was developed. Substitute meals will be available for children who do not like the menu.
    • Families are encouraged to check their own glucose levels, administer insulin, and record all results prior to meals.

    Weekend Objective
The weekend offers families the opportunity to meet with peers and share feelings and ideas on raising a child or children with diabetes. It provides a support group setting for parents while their children (child with diabetes and siblings) are learning at programs developed specifically for them.

    Goals

    • To enable children with diabetes and their families to meet other families who have a child with diabetes.
    • To give parents the opportunity to learn while their children are cared for by staff families with diabetes in children.
    • To enable children and their families to have fun and develop a better understanding of diabetes.
    • To foster more independence by using better diabetes management skills.
    • To allow children and their families to increase self-confidence and enhance their ability to cope with diabetes.
    • To provide an opportunity to make friends and share experiences of living with diabetes.
