Message from the Chairman for April 18, 1999

I have just finished reading Charlene Mann's article on why she wants a cure for diabetes for her son Julian. Charlene is totally right. Parents of children with diabetes become their child's pancreas with all the frightening responsibilities that go along with it.

I was never taught to be an organ in my child's body. But that's how we parents function, providing the biological and disciplined support necessary for our children to live. It shows how important our bodies are and how much we need to take care of them.

Like all parents who have children with diabetes, I want a cure for my child and I am impatient that one be found. Whatever we can do, let's do it and keep on pushing until we get the answers. Through we are "Uniting the world to cure diabetes."

Thank you Charlene and Julian. Your words have made an impact. What is the hardest part about diabetes? "Just having it."
