Ann, Marissa was going to commute, but we actually thought it "safer" to live on campus. That first semester was quite stressful for us! The traffic can be awful going to school, so we opted for the dorms.

I will say someone on the Parent's chat, Stacey, helped me immensely by linking me to the NYSBOE site where they clearly state children with diabetes are allowed to test BG at any time anywhere they are. I had never come across that before and wonder if it is new.

Zookpr, if you've obtained authorization from your child's physician that he or she possesses the maturity and skill set to check in the classroom he or she should be able to do so.

they said that none of the major life activities were substantionally affected. THankfully I posted about it in a forumon here, and an ada volunteer read it, forwarded to someone in my area, and they forwarded it to an attorney. So we are working throught it. We had a re-meeting monday, and I mentioned mitigating measures, since she is completely dependant on the school. Theey are now confused and dont know if she can have one or not, so they should have a decision by friday

Carol, Linda has made a good point. It is up to the 504 team to approve - not the school district's attorneys. Did you ask why?

Registered User Ann (MI) Phil,18, dx'd 8/'90 pumps  (76.226.12.226) Wed Aug 29 09:14:01 PM EDT 2007
We were always able to test in class, only issue was that no one else do a random bl/sugar using his equipment.

We handed a letter out every year to the teachers of our expectations, and pretty much they were test bl/sugar as needed, bathroom rights, drinks & food without disturbing anyone else.

That's great Brenda. Also, if anyone wants to talk to ADA's Legal Advocate about a specific school issue, please call 1-800-DIABETES so we can put you in the queue for a prompt response.

Personally I think if the child can show that they can test and treat low blood sugars, then they should be able to test in class. Discrimination against a health issue if they cannot.

Registered User Carol William, 5, dx'd 3-10-04, pumping since 10/22/04  (68.33.208.159) Wed Aug 29 09:16:33 PM EDT 2007
Crystal - I think the school wanted to make sure it was o.k. - they have not done one for diabetes before (that school - not the district). The principal told me in passing today and I was busy with something else - William is having problems with lows ,etc.

Registered User Crystal J. ADA, Mom of Devin, 17, dx'd at 1  (75.75.35.120) Wed Aug 29 09:16:33 PM EDT 2007
Recommend to everyone that if you don't have a 504 in place for your child to consider getting the eligibility process going. If things are going well at your child's school, this is the best time to put a plan in place.

Registered User Ronda mom of Connor,6, dxd 10/25/06  (64.53.41.90) Wed Aug 29 09:16:35 PM EDT 2007
Connor's teacher took all of the materials I gave her and copied them and handed them out to all the teachers and staff that will have contact with him....there are some new teachers .....she's been just great....she has a son w/ asthma so she understands about having a child w/ a chronic illness

Registered User zookpr Mom of Lydia, Prisca, Trevor, all dx'd  (97.84.130.199) Wed Aug 29 09:16:45 PM EDT 2007
They just want the kids to go to the office for any testing. It isn't too bad for Trevor (he is in first grade) but Prisca (5th) is quite shy about her diabetes and doesn't want constant attention drawn to herself. Lydia is in 7th and she has a lot of walking between classes. She will need to be able to test wherever she is as she drops extremely fast and is not sensitive to her lows.

Registered User Linda [pookas] Mom to:Hunter,7,dx'd 11/05,MM522  (4.130.222.236) Wed Aug 29 09:16:49 PM EDT 2007
Discrimination just like a child in a wheelchair and no handicap access IMO

Again, children who are able to do so should be permitted to check in the classroom.

Registered User Ann (MI) Phil,18, dx'd 8/'90 pumps  (76.226.12.226) Wed Aug 29 09:18:45 PM EDT 2007
Brenda, the issue was curiosity and if someone wanted to check their blood sugar he would just put a new strip in the meter and a new lancet in the poker and let them. We never made an issue of letting anyone who requested a bl/sugar check, usually we just did it. The issue was it's his diabetes, only he should test his bl/sugar. They didn't want parents calling in about blood exposure, etc.

Registered User Crystal J. ADA, Mom of Devin, 17, dx'd at 1  (75.75.35.120) Wed Aug 29 09:18:47 PM EDT 2007
Recommend reviewing your child's diabetes plan with your school nurse and work with her to reach out to other staff and to get the training done.

No, Crystal, she was only to watch over him and take him to the nurse if he felt low and to specials, lunch and recess. She was also the classroom aide so the kids didn't know any different.

ADA is receiving a few calls from parents around the country reporting that schools are denying 504. I think the main reason for this is that schools do not understand the applicability of 504 to diabetes. They don't understand the impact upon other major life activities other than learning. Very important to put everything in writing.

Registered User Crystal J. ADA, Mom of Devin, 17, dx'd at 1  (75.75.35.120) Wed Aug 29 09:23:35 PM EDT 2007

Crystal, that is why we had the lady from the dept of health go in and do a presentation then sit in on the first 504 meeting. I didn't want to be alone in the fight.

But the aide was very reluctant to even check Hunter, our school has been so good about it all. I don't think I would trust anyone else but me, Hunter or nurse to take care of a low.

Chelsea, your parents need to set up a meeting with your school nurse or other school administrator to discuss how your diabetes care plan will be implemented.

There is a lady that posts at www.type1parents.org and she has done a wonderful job explaining why her child qualifies for a 504. It is well worth looking at!

Registered User Crystal J. ADA, Mom of Devin, 17, dx'd at 1  (75.75.35.120) Wed Aug 29 09:26:45 PM EDT 2007
It is critical to have school staff members on site - in addition to your school nurse - who know how to recognize and treat a low.

Registered User Crystal J. ADA, Mom of Devin, 17, dx'd at 1  (75.75.35.120) Wed Aug 29 09:27:02 PM EDT 2007
Jen, what happened?

Registered User Jen Mom of Tyler 8, dxd @6  (66.31.117.102) Wed Aug 29 09:28:06 PM EDT 2007
Nurse says she doesn't have time to call me after Tylers checks - even if he is low or high....his 504 from last year (review/reassessment date of 3/8/07) clearly states that I am to be called after every bg reading

Registered User Linda [pookas] Mom to:Hunter,7,dx'd 11/05,MM522  (4.130.222.236) Wed Aug 29 09:28:19 PM EDT 2007
Crystal, in bigger schools, yes, I agree, but the nurse was always 30 seconds away from Hunter in case of emergency. SO I didn't push the issue. Our school is VERY tiny

Registered User Jen Mom of Tyler 8, dxd @6  (66.31.117.102) Wed Aug 29 09:28:24 PM EDT 2007

If it is in the 504 and the principal and all signed, then it is LAW according to Tyler's health.

Registered User Crystal J. ADA, Mom of Devin, 17, dx'd at 1  (75.75.35.120) Wed Aug 29 09:30:02 PM EDT 2007
Linda, if that works for you that's great. Does your nurse go on field trips and stay for after-school activities? What happens if the school nurse is absent or taking care of another child?

Registered User Toni aunt of Erin, 10, pump  (67.87.164.21) Wed Aug 29 09:30:04 PM EDT 2007
If it is in writing in the 504 already, Nurse has to follow it. School has already agreed to it.

Registered User Jen Mom of Tyler 8, dxd @6  (66.31.117.102) Wed Aug 29 09:31:39 PM EDT 2007
don't want to make too many waves yet....figured I would bring her a highlighted copy of his 504 plan....I just wanted to start the school year off right....he will be at this school for the next 3 years....504 is from his other school but is in the same district..(k-2 then 3-5) was told that it would carry over to this school year to keep him "covered" up until march of this school year

Crystal, I work at the school, only 4 doors down. I go on all field trips w/ him and no after school activities. If the school nurse is absent, I am to be contacted by 9:30am so I can take care of him at school and the school nurse has typed out intructions for a sub nurse.

It is important to keep everything in perspective and be sensitive to the school's concerns. Ask yourself - what is absolutely necessary to meet my child's needs and what would I like to have in place? What's tolerable, intolerable and what can I live with.

Tammy, absences without penalty due to diabetes is commonly written into 504 plans. We, as parents, must acknowledge what is a reasonable amount of absences.

Bus drivers: Information given to the bus drivers should be coordinated through the school nurse or school administrator. Bus drivers should receive minimal training which includes a diabete overview, hypo recognition and treatment, and the importance of allowing child to have a snack. Where I live, all of the school bus drivers - and subs - have been trained in glucagon administration.

I won the Glucagon fight last year, the SECOND time I brought in the Kadamus letter regarding Glucagon admin. in NYS; also, after another fourth grader was dx'd with Type 1 over Christmas vacation. Principal much more amenable then to requests. Nothing would have been accomplished, however, without our wonderful school nurse, who took it completely upon herself to push for and train six First Responders. And she had to push for it.

They have Jess check her own bg, and the teacher then calls the nurse to tell her what it was, but when i mentioned glucagon, that started an issue about volunteers, and no one else, etc and that the glucagon would be in the nurses kit anyways so having someone else trained wouldnt help cuz the nurse would have the glucaon, so i mentioned having it in Jessi's backpack with her tester and supplies and that started them in on other things

Tammy, it's ok to have back-up glucagon in the clinic, but it really needs to be kept very close and accessible to your child. Backpack, teacher's desk, gym teacher's locker, etc. Someone in addition to the school nurse needs to know how to use it.

Susan, I would not store glucagon on a bus because it would be subject to temperature changes. Child would need to carry it in backpack or purse. Bus driver needs to be made aware of its location.

What about doing a check at the end of the day before getting on the bus?

Registered User Crystal J. ADA, Mom of Devin, 17, dx'd at 1  (75.75.35.120) Wed Aug 29 09:56:03 PM EDT 2007
Bus driver should keep a condensed health care plan in his emergency kit telling him where glucagon can be found on the child. Work with your school nurse to make sure your bus driver has this key information.

Registered User Crystal J. ADA, Mom of Devin, 17, dx'd at 1  (75.75.35.120) Wed Aug 29 09:56:28 PM EDT 2007
Linda, that can be written into the plan - especially for an elementary school-aged child.

Registered User Susan Cory, 18, dx'd @9, pumping  (67.149.192.44) Wed Aug 29 09:56:38 PM EDT 2007
That was the way we handled it Crystal. Once our school district had their arm twisted a little, they agreed to provide coverage for glucagon. In the beginning 3 people were trained and 1 was always present. In high school 3 key people plus all the security guards and gym teacher were trained - plus bus driver.

Crystal, we visited with you and got your contact info at FFL. What would be the best direction to send people that are having problems? Can they email you and let you forward to the correct people or should they start at their local ADA office? I mean for problems with 504 plans, not common simple problems.

Susan, there's definitely some product redesign going on. We all should be gently nudging Lilly and Novo. Although, with proper training glucagon can be safely and correctly administered.

I think that a "young adult" must be a student to remain on their parents ins. It is important to stress to teens that they need to get a job with decent health insurance when they graduate, whether it be high school or college. As for diabetes at college, I do not think that colleges are required to provide any kind of medical support. We left it up to Marissa to educate her instructors and fellow students about diabetes. Ironically, as a nursing student, she's had instructors using outdated texts. So, on exams, Marissa has gotten things marked wrong because the test was based on the text, not what it really is. Rolling Eyes

I think one instructor told Marissa she could not have type 1 if she were taking Symlin (she only tried it for a few weeks). And, one, probably the same woman, didn't know the amount of time you should wait to eat after injecting NovoLog/Humalog.
