Oh shoot, back to the drawing board!
Seriously - it's purple this year. With white print. And the volunteer shirts are white with purple print. Real purple - as in grape.

Registered User Billetdeaux CWD Events, Sam's mom, 16, dx'd 8/98  (69.213.204.42) Tue Jan 16 09:09:49 PM EST 2007
Well, purple may not match your pump, but you'll be able to pick out all the other CWD purple people in the parks and at the hotel!

Registered User Brenda H. mom of Marissa, 19, dx'd 9/89  (216.68.227.252) Tue Jan 16 09:09:52 PM EST 2007
Purple!?! Jeff didn't veto this? Maybe you didn't let him vote. LOL  Gonna be hotter than hot in such a dark color, but I guess we'll ALL be hot and sweaty.

Registered User Billetdeaux CWD Events, Sam's mom, 16, dx'd 8/98  (69.213.204.42) Tue Jan 16 09:10:32 PM EST 2007
Scholarships - assuming they are the same as last year - cover the registration, 4 nights at the hotel, banquet tickets, Magical Memories breakfast tickets. It doesn't cover transportation.

Registered User mrsbadshoe Mom of Delaney,9, dx 12/04 - connor, 13 dx10/03  (68.236.28.83) Tue Jan 16 09:10:40 PM EST 2007
The teen day at MGM. Are they organized to do certain stuff or just allowed to enjoy the park on there own?

I love purple

Registered User Billetdeaux CWD Events, Sam's mom, 16, dx'd 8/98  (69.213.204.42) Tue Jan 16 09:11:14 PM EST 2007
Note that CWD isn't in charge of the scholarships - they are given through the Education for CWD Foundation, which is an entirely different company. www.ecwdf.org

Registered User Paige's Dad (KS) Dad of Paige, 8, Diagnosed October 10th, 2006, Pumping  (70.252.172.18) Tue Jan 16 09:12:06 PM EST 2007
well I didn't specify transportation, but I kind of figured that part. I just didn't want to wear out your email today, I sent you so many that my email added you to my address book LOL

Registered User Billetdeaux CWD Events, Sam's mom, 16, dx'd 8/98  (69.213.204.42) Tue Jan 16 09:12:56 PM EST 2007
Teen Day at MGM - There is an underlying structure, and then they are free to superimpose what they want to do on that structure. They will have certain check-in times when they absolutely HAVE to go back to the home base area (indoors and air conditioned) to check bg, get a once-over, get lunch vouchers, water, etc. If they do not show up when they are supposed to, we send out an APB - and we do find them - and then they are escorted back to the hotel. With so many kids in a park, they have to follow the rules. No ifs, ands, or buts. Last year, two kids were brought back to the hotel.

Registered User mrsbadshoe Mom of Delaney,9, dx 12/04 - connor, 13 dx10/03  (68.236.28.83) Tue Jan 16 09:13:57 PM EST 2007

Registered User Brenda H. mom of Marissa, 19, dx'd 9/89  (216.68.227.252) Tue Jan 16 09:15:03 PM EST 2007
If your child has a pump, he/she doesn't need a watch, do they? Marissa uses her pump to check the time (or her cell phone).

Registered User mrsbadshoe Mom of Delaney,9, dx 12/04 - connor, 13 dx10/03  (68.236.28.83) Tue Jan 16 09:15:13 PM EST 2007
What about shows and stuff guess they have to pay attention to how long a show is before they go in...otherwise they could get in trouble with check in times

Registered User Paige's Dad (KS) Dad of Paige, 8, Diagnosed October 10th, 2006, Pumping  (70.252.172.18) Tue Jan 16 09:15:26 PM EST 2007

Check-in times span a half hour to 45 minutes, i.e., we expect all the kids to check in between 11:30 and 12:15 to get their lunch vouchers. So, if some kids are in one show or on one ride, they can show up at a different time than kids who are at other attractions.

Registered User Heidyn type 1  (72.66.247.148) Tue Jan 16 09:17:18 PM EST 2007

Do older Teen age siblings tend to get invovled and enjoy the conference?

Registered User Wendy type 1/pumper, quilt square number 488  (76.1.235.164) Tue Jan 16 09:19:10 PM EST 2007

We do have a couple new events at FFL this summer... on Friday evening, we're having a Dessert with the Faculty. This is for parents (and it's ok to bring your younger kids). The teens and tweeners will have their own social events that evening, so it is your opportunity to chat with the faculty from the last couple of days.

Registered User NNGAngel Mom of Declan,5, dx 3y 8m  (205.188.116.12) Tue Jan 16 09:19:14 PM EST 2007
It is great the kids have so many wonderful role models

Registered User Wendy type 1/pumper, quilt square number 488  (76.1.235.164) Tue Jan 16 09:19:38 PM EST 2007

Yes, all the teens get involved. Including sibs and friends. The only time we separate into those with type 1 and those without is when we have a specific discussion group for that purpose. That is one time on Thursday, and the kids must go. They do have to attend all day Thursday in order to participate in Friday's Teen Day at MGM. There will be signature cards - no faking it.

Also, Thursday evening after the banquet - we will have a wonderful Disney DJ playing music in the ballroom from 9-11. There will be some Disney characters paying a visit to the kids (photos and autographs are fine)... and in a different ballroom, the teens will have a party of their own from 9-11.

If you have any questions at all about whether the kids (siblings and kids with type 1) enjoy the conferences, you need only look at the report from last summer's event. The kids have the time of their lives. Parents, too. Brenda - can you post the link to last year's report, please? And stop moaning about the heat!

Registered User Brenda H. mom of Marissa, 19, dx'd 9/89  (216.68.227.252) Tue Jan 16 09:25:05 PM EST 2007
But, always bring a light jacket or such to wear during the sessions because there's AC inside.
And, if you've not yet attended a Conf., bring an almost empty suitcase to take home all the vendor stuff.
Even Kathryn, our sibling, asked what Abbott would be bringing.

Speaking of sponsors... we have two very generous commitments that I should tell you all about. First, Abbott is sponsoring a frio pack for every family. I've ordered them already. This is to help you keep your insulin at an ok temperature while you are tooling around the HOT HOT HOT theme parks in July. We want the kids to stay healthy. Secondly, remember those wonderful 'all you can drink' cups at the Coronado? LifeScan and Animas are pitching in to buy one per child for all the kids registered for the conference. We'll have them available probably on Monday night. Isn't that amazing generosity? I'm so pleased with both of these up-front items for our families.

We're not doing the Buddies as we did last year, if that's what you're asking. That turned out to be a lot of work that not a lot of people appreciated. However, within the age groups, the leaders are going to try to mix 'old' and 'new' - and we as a staff are going to try to do a better job of welcoming the First Timer families throughout the conference - not just at 3:00 on Wednesday. We all can recognize the First Timers - they wear ribbons on their name badges! Grin

Connie - We booked DJ Miles pretty much all day on Friday for the elementary and tweener group. He's the DJ who works our Banquet on Thursday night, and then he does other fun stuff with the kids on Friday. They will have a blast! It will definitely be 'turn down basal' time.

Yes, there will definitely be additional frios (different sizes, too). Cooler Concept will have a table in the exhibit hall.

do you use the frio packs with your pump? Like in your pouch or something? We have never had to really worry about heat even in NY

Barb, we have never tried the frio packs and have done many trips to disney but I wonder if maybe we are just missing sutle changes due to temperature we haven't realized prior

The DJ added so much to the evening a couple of years ago - it was an evening full of fun! I hope families let their little ones rest in the afternoon - before the banquet so they can experience some of the evening. It's certainly worth it!

There are different frio packs for pumps. I find them bulky. Sam wears his pump through the morning and into the afternoon, and if he finds his insulin is losing effectiveness (because of the heat), we switch to injections with the insulin I carry in the frio in my purse.

The sessions schedule is actually posted online as of Sunday. And there are plenty of reminds to 'dress nicely' where that is necessary... and 'tickets needed' where you need tickets. The banquet will definitely sell out this year, so don't wait until the last minute to get tickets.

When you look at the schedule online, remember that all day Weds are focus groups (and lots with Dr. Bob, Joe S., and Scott S from last year... by request). Also, the Chris Dudley clinic on Tuesday still has space.

And, for first timers, the banquet is a buffet. Too many people to to a sit-down thing and it's easier for carb counting. Mike Schurig counts all those lovely carbs and has cards near all the foods identifying their carb count. He and Laura double-check all the foods.

Ah yes. I should have mentioned that. ALL of the food is buffet-style. You simply can't do a sit-down meal (or snack break) with kids... or finicky-eater-parents. Best just to get a ton of healthy food, figure portion size and carb counts, and let everyone go at it!

Everything is casual dress except for the Teen Dinner Dance... and the 'fancy' aspect of that is something they requested. At the banquet, I usually try to dress up a bit, but the last two I think I was so busy I stayed in my shorts and grubby t-shirt from earlier in the day. Just be comfortable! By the end of the banquet, you will be on the dance floor... maybe even dancing with Mickey!

Foodwise - for anyone that needs a special diet, we do our best to accommodate. Disney is pretty famous for doing well with special dietary accommodations, but they need to know well ahead of time. so, we ask on the registration form. Right now, I know that we will be nut-free (all food), and that we will have a special gluten free buffet. You do need to specify that you need gluten free on the registration form so that we order enough.
