Hmmm - the garage door is really more of a nuisance. I was too lazy to bring the car into the garage before it froze. So, now I just have to walk all the way around the house with anything I want to bring in the front door (including all those bags of groceries today)...
The economy is so bad around here, I know that that is the only way we would be able to attend, not telling Paige anything about it, don't want to get her hopes up

Yep, I'm volunteering where ever you tell me, with the tweeners I do believe.
The kids sessions are pretty much picked for them. You just bring them to the room that is indicated on the schedule (or for pool time, you need to bring them to the pool). You do not sign up for sessions ahead of time. Simply go to what interests you - if it's not your cup of tea, pick up and go to a different session.

Focus group info will be online in a few weeks. I know which companies are in which time slots, but I do not know their topics. When that info comes out, you will email me with who in your family wants to go to which focus group - and I need to ask everyone to stick with that (i.e., don't sign up and not show). There are limited places in each group, and someone will want your seat if you decide not to come. I put on my meanie hat for that!

Yes, we are in the same section of the Coronado Convention Center. You can actually see which rooms if you go online to the schedule. We have all of Veracruz, Coronado A-J, all the Fiesta rooms, and a few more. it's a lot of space - more than half of the Convention Center.

Disney tickets: For military families, you can get them through Shades of Green. For anyone else, you can get Convention tickets - great prices - from the link on the conference website. I can't link to the Disney ticket site from here - you need to go to the CWD site first.

Focus Groups do fill up - but this year, instead of 30 chairs per room, we can fit 50. And we're offering quite a few more focus groups, so that more people can participate. AND, sports central will be open all day on Weds so anyone who wants to play basketball or volleyball may do so - inside in the air conditioning!

btw, we have a much bigger exhibit hall this year, which will be loads of fun for the Scavenger Hunt. And all but 4 booths are filled. It's amazing. Lots of new exhibitors with us!
Racing this spring in Tour of Virginia (with 5-6 other type 1's) and this summer with 7 others. In full biking gear at the conference for sure...

Should have about 2500 participants this summer, with roughly half being kids. And that divides pretty evenly into age groups... 5 and under, 6-9, 10-12, and 13-17.

It was really great having all of the athletes last summer. The kids loved it so.. so much to do with them..

Kevin's performance made me cry, too. He was truly wonderful. And then I loved that he just picked up and went and played basketball with the teens in Sports Central. He is, after all, a teen with diabetes himself!

I don't think there are as many "famous" female athletes with type 1. Nicole Johnson Baker is famous, of course, but not an athlete.

Kevin made all of us cry! It was one of the best! I played basketball with him ((even though I am realllllly bad)) and he acted like any other teen would

Re: which celebrities come to the conferences: I do not pick them. The sponsoring companies have contracts with different celebrities, and they offer me a choice of a few different names. I do the best I can with good choices.

We have some really good new topics for sessions this year. Take a look at the schedule... some of the tried-n-true, but also some really excellent variety with cutting edge science.
It was so cute how she had the baby there. Diamond saw her & Gary (thanks Laura) & then all the girls flocked to Phil. LOL

There is a comedian in Atlanta, Chelsea Rice, who is
Comedy is very hard to do about diabetes. Some falls flat, and some ends up being abrasive or insulting. I really try to avoid comedy (some comedians have sent me DVDs, and there wasn't a single one I thought was appropriate for our very mixed age group audience). There is plenty to do that is NOT sports. We just happen to be talking about sports.

Stacey - don't lose those mirrors! We actually talked about doing a make-up session this year and couldn't fit it in the teen schedule. Maybe it's something the tweener girls would like next year... or would that be pushing it? I think skin care is a good topic for 10-12 year olds.

Is there any possiblity of any of the continuous monitor companies letting patients trial a CGMS at the conference - with a doctor's order perhaps?

I remember Halloween being a challenge that year too.Joel wasn't hospitalized at all. We had a half day to learn how to care for him and were sent home home
Rhon: I will typically have to eat a lot in the first 2 hours to avoid lows, and increase basal near the end of rides, to avoid highs afterwards. With small adjustments, it stays perfect, and really makes off the bike management a breeze

btw, the pump companies will all be letting people try pumps - including OmniPod, who is new with us this year. You do need a prescription to try a pump - info is on the conference home page (or email me).

Not sure if any have tried, but on Halloween, my mom would buy all of my candy. .10 cents for the small ones, and .25 cents for all chocolate. I typically made $25-30 on halloween, and was happy to give up the candy.
That's good Phil. We're having to do that with Diamond now. She bowls, which isn't too terribly athletic, but she goes super high everytime. So she checks in between each game (3 games total) now. It seems to help.

How about to try infusion sets? Last year Cozmo wouldn't allow us to try an infusion set without a 'script but unomedical let me try one (I just inserted it - didn't use insulin of course)
Lots of Pennsylvania folks coming to the conference this summer! I think about 15 families so far, and it is still quite early in the registration process!

Oh the quilt....I was sooooooo moved by seeing those all together for the 1st time last year. Man...
I have to work with my son on his quilt. We have been putting it off, but I need to get busy.
It's a good idea, Ellen... but i need to ask each company. One of the concerns that I would have is that we aren't crazy about pokey things on the exhibit floor. That's why all pump trials are done in hospitality suites or conference rooms. You need privacy for that sort of thing. And kids are often scared.

We did not do well with our 1st attempt at iron on pics. Laura, however did great! Did you use iron ons?

I used HP iron on transfers. I downloaded pictures and printed them , ironed them onto the quilts, and trimmed the edges with fabric paint
Sounds like there will be lots of new quilt squares that are using iron ons.
Sam's quilt square is #2. A friend made it for me because I don't have the first idea how to quilt. But Natalie Bellini's quilt square is #553.. and I made that for her for Christmas. Actually, i decorated that for her for Christmas. I did the hand-sewing, but not the quilting. It was harder than I thought it would be.
That sounds easy Stacey....hopefully the rest of us can handle it too.
For Natalie's square, yes, I used iron-on transfers. And I wrecked up a whole bunch of them before i actually got it to work. I am not a good ironer... I didn't even know how my iron worked. My father-in-law had to show me at Thanksgiving. Sad but true.
I saw Natalie's quilt at the Marco island Conference. it was great! I'm impressed!
I made the mistake of turning Diamond's quilt to be a diamond, but it can't be hung that way. That & our not so great attempt at iron ons, we really need to redo it.
believe me, i'm sewingly challanged. His quilt may not be the best looking one, but its good enough for us..
Just avoid gluing things on the quilts as they may fall off over time.
Oh that's a good tip Brenda!
The trick was ironing the photos onto another piece of light colored fabric first... and then turning under the edges and hand-sewing them on. If I'd tried to iron the photos transfers directly onto the quilt, I would have wrecked several squares.
I can't wait to see them all again. I took the pic of Diamond with hers.
And, remember that it should have NO SHARPS because we could tab ourselves.

Yes, thanks Brenda....I was already thinking that I am great with a hot glue gun, now I will know to avoid that. Does anyone ever create a scrapbook of the conference to be looked at in following years? I am a major scrapbooker and would be happy to do one.
Bob enjoyed helping hang, but he got torn away to go to the 1st timers thing. He'll help again this year if he's needed.

Karen, Julia does a photo collage of each year. It's very cool. You get to see it at the conference.
I ironed each picture onto a piece of white felt.. then glued it onto the quilt.

HI Karen - We did scrapbooks for the first few years... but as you will see, there is so much to the conference, that really we needed the website to be able to represent it well. You are certainly welcome to scrapbook FFL this summer, and we'd be happy to display the book at future conferences.

Ellen, if there are, they need to speak up fast. All the tables are sold, and there are a total of 4 booths open! We do have a celiac discussion group this year. Crystal Jackson is going to lead it (her daughter has celiac and type 1).

Sorry that was confusing. You need to make and send your quilt squares well in advance of the conference. I think Jeff and Brenda need them by mid-June. The info on where to send, etc., is on the Quilt link I provided earlier.
Good point, E. The elementary kids will be making some kind of arts-n-crafts memento this year; not sure it will be a whole scrapbook - that was kind of overwhelming for some of the kids!

First-timers get to wear a special ribbon. Last year, they were pink. Not sure what color this year. (Oh, yes, Stacey - the shirts ARE purple)

1st timers had to wear pink tags. Bob teased Laura that he didn't like wearing pink. LOL it was just so the staff would know & be able to help you I guess.

why two pumps?
I really liked the first timer tags- I think it was helpful in terms of the staff and old timer families being able to identify someone who was new and maybe not feeling quite 'at home' yet. We'll definitely do them again this summer. Maybe not pink, though. Rhon - I was proud of Bob - he wore his pink ribbon the whole time!
We were first timers last year and the ribbons were great - then when we were standing around looking lost and confused someone would know to help and point us in the right direction.
I'm with Jeff! But I'll wear it.

I'm teasing. I won't do brown. We may need to start back on some of the earlier colors! It needs to be a bright color so that we stand out in the Magic kingdom crowd. It is so fun finding hundreds and hundreds of CWD folks in that park on a busy Saturday!

Paige's Dad, I love John Deere green. I had my '92 Oldsmobile painted that color. Now no one rearends me on the Beltway anymore! If they do, they can't say they didn't see me anyway.
