Laura Billetdeaux CWD Events  (76.226.121.33) Wed Jan 09 09:13:57 PM EST 2008
Chelsea, if your dad isn't comfortable on the chat, he can always email me if he has questions. And make sure you take a look at the conference website in the next week or so - we are going to have all of the sessions listed in detail.
Poppop Grandparents of Kyle, dx'd at 7  (24.161.116.245) Wed Jan 09 09:14:24 PM EST 2008
Laura, Poppop is on the chat along with Grammy. System didn't allow me to include Grammy.

In fact, that was my Reminder for the Night! To take a look at the website sometime next week and check out the schedule.
Also - anyone needing childcare for kids under age 6 - those forms are now online. We can accept 100 kids in childcare.

Hi PDConnie
Laura Billetdeaux CWD Events  (76.226.121.33) Wed Jan 09 09:16:57 PM EST 2008
Ok then - Poppop and Grammy!![]()
Heather - no Friends for Life events at Disney in California. They aren't big enough. We require a giant convention space. At this point, only the Coronado at Disney World and the Marriott World Center are large enough to accommodate the conference. This year, we'll have the teens over at Marriott World Center because not everything fits at the Renaissance!
Laura Billetdeaux CWD Events  (76.226.121.33) Wed Jan 09 09:17:09 PM EST 2008

Geez, it's hard to believe that Brooke was in childcare the first year we attended and she'll turn 10 on July 31st...so it's elementary for her this summer but she is REALLY looking forward to being a 'tween' at the Bethesda conference![]()

Laura Billetdeaux CWD Events  (76.226.121.33) Wed Jan 09 09:18:12 PM EST 2008
Shirt color: I'm trying for a very light butter yellow with turquoise print. But no final decisions yet - I'm waiting for pricing! Last year's purple was too dark for the heat, I think.
Connie (VA) Mom of Brett (15) & Brooke (9, dx'd 8/02, pumping)  (68.100.17.141) Wed Jan 09 09:18:57 PM EST 2008

We do have other conferences in California (and other places in the country) - just not the summer conference. Here is the link to our events schedule: http://www.childrenwithdiabetes.com/activities/ Note that there is a conference in Seattle in 6 weeks.

The Grandparents Group will be a Biggie this year! I saw Betty last week at the CWD conference in Marco Island - we didn't get a chance to sit down and talk details, but we will soon. I really enjoy having grandparents with us - it is so important!

Hi Laura, we sent off our registration form Monday for the Focus on Pumping in Seattle!
Laura Billetdeaux CWD Events  (76.226.121.33) Wed Jan 09 09:22:19 PM EST 2008
Poppop - That is my new favorite photo. I cropped it a bit - but to me, that photo encompasses what CWD is all about. Alexa's grandma wrote to me as soon as she saw the photo. She's working with us on the Seattle conference next month. What a nice family.

It looks like a great time. I wish I could come, but I don't think the logistics are gonna work out this year :(
Laura Billetdeaux CWD Events  (76.226.121.33) Wed Jan 09 09:23:40 PM EST 2008
Yay Bonnie! We are going to have so much fun in Seattle. It looks like a wonderful group - with so many first-timers! And such great speakers. I can't wait! It's also going to be the first time that my college-age son, Sam, is on staff. He'll be working with the Tween group, and is very excited about it.
Connie (VA) Mom of Brett (15) & Brooke (9, dx'd 8/02, pumping)  (68.100.17.141) Wed Jan 09 09:24:01 PM EST 2008
Sure, Laura. The Education for Children with Diabetes (ECWDF) provides scholarships for families to attend the annual FFL conference. New this year will be scholarships solely for young adults. More information on what is covered and the applications for the scholarships can be found at www.ecwdf.org
Poppop Grandparents of Kyle, dx'd at 7  (24.161.116.245) Wed Jan 09 09:24:16 PM EST 2008
We are thrilled and Alexa along with her parents travelled from Seattle to NYS to visit us during the Thanksgiving break. The girls were so excited to be able to spend time together and we (parents & grandparents) really enjoyed our time together. CWD/FFL is great for everyone.
Christine 22 year old diabetic  (72.75.234.104) Wed Jan 09 09:24:27 PM EST 2008
Is FFL the one that is sold out already?
Laura Billetdeaux CWD Events  (76.226.121.33) Wed Jan 09 09:24:37 PM EST 2008
Christine - This chat is about any conference... although most people tend to ask about FFL or the next conference in line (Seattle). I'm open for any questions! You also can email me privately if you'd like more of an individual conversation. That's fine.
Laura Billetdeaux CWD Events  (76.226.121.33) Wed Jan 09 09:25:10 PM EST 2008

Laura Billetdeaux CWD Events  (76.226.121.33) Wed Jan 09 09:27:02 PM EST 2008
None of the current conferences are sold out. The Marco Island conference that was held last week sold out three months ago. The FFL room block is getting pretty full... so if you want to stay at the conference hotel, you should make a reservation asap. We have reserved nearly the whole hotel (a few rooms are held by airlines, etc., for their crews). You are, of course, welcome to commute or stay elsewhere. Most people choose to be on site because of the convenience of being with everyone.
Christine 22 year old diabetic  (72.75.234.104) Wed Jan 09 09:28:02 PM EST 2008
Ok, I must have been thinking of Marco Island
Laura Billetdeaux CWD Events  (76.226.121.33) Wed Jan 09 09:28:23 PM EST 2008
Plenty to do at the Seattle conference! I just sent the kids schedule to Jeff to post online - it should be up this weekend. So Dylan can see exactly what he'll be doing. And, if he is nervous or has questions, I can connect you to Miss Lauren or Miss Michelle who run the elementary program, and they can answer even more questions! Dylan will have a blast (make sure he brings a swimsuit).

The deadline for ECWDF scholarships is April 15, 2008. Families/Young Adults will be notified by May 31, 2008 if they receive one.
Laura Billetdeaux CWD Events  (76.226.121.33) Wed Jan 09 09:29:37 PM EST 2008
Early registration (the least expensive price) ends on January 31. Assuming there is space, you can register right up to July 1. However, I am guessing that the conference will sell out and that we won't have last minute registration available.
Christine 22 year old diabetic  (72.75.234.104) Wed Jan 09 09:29:41 PM EST 2008

I believe there are 10 scholarships for young adults... right Connie? Note that the scholarships come from the ECWDF which is a totally separate organization from CWD. Connie is on the Board, so she's the expert.

Bonnie - We will fetch you! Do not worry. Mary Babin coordinates childcare for each and every conference, and she knows what she's doing. She is fabulous with the kids - and she is a nurse and CDE. We know where to find YOU - so if we need you, we'll come into the session and holler. Seriously.

I'll vouch for that. Chris is a good orders-taker. He also is in charge of Security at all of our conferences. Before we pick a site for a conference, Chris scouts things out to make sure it's a safe place for us. He's a gem. Chris - sorry Bernie and Trev are sick. How's the dog?

With the kids in childcare, we do test bgs... they are too young to tell us if they feel high, low, 'funny', etc., so we check them. However, the sessions are just an hour long, and in between sessions, you pick up your child for snack break or lunch, so you can eyeball them to see what you think, check bg, give snack and insulin... whatever you need to do.

Christine, the applications go to the ECWDF President and then from there she blinds them out and sends them out to those who review the applications. Since I don't receive the applications as they come in, I'm not aware of how many come in. With that said, though, if you are interested it's certainly worth your time to complete and submit![]()

Oh no - you definitely won't starve! Picking the food for the conferences is my favorite part... and then Mike Schurig, CWD's wonderful dietitian, figures out portion sizes and carb counts for every item of food that goes on the buffet tables. So, the info is right there for you to figure insulin dosing.

Two years ago at Sea World was about the hottest I remember. That Saturday was brutal. And we did not have special passes. This year, the Saturday park will be Universal. You have a choice of going to either Islands of Adventure or Universal Studios Florida. The price of the ticket - purchased on your registration - includes lunch. It also includes a Guest Assistance Card for you. I have only 1000 of those, as that is how many people I am anticipating coming to the lunch. Btw, the lunch is a benefit for the ECWDF and helps to support the scholarships that Connie has been telling us about. If you purchased a ticket to the park at the gate, it would be over $60. So essentially you get lunch for free, plus a Guest Assistance Card. The park gave us a very good deal. No outdoor air conditioning, though!

Different system this year. The sponsoring companies will all send me their focus group topics and times by the end of February. We will then post them online and people will sign up via computer. You will need to be registered for the conference in order to sign up for focus groups. Last year with all the focus groups and 2500 people, it got very labor-intensive trying to figure out 'who goes where' - especially when people changed their minds! So, this year, the computer can help!

Ah - a couple of FUN special guests! Jay Hewitt is going to be back. Some of you may remember him from a few years ago. He is a triathlete with type 1. He's an atty, and he is now married with a little baby. He's got a great message for both kids and parents alike. He'll be working with the teens, meeting the other kids, and presenting the keynote at the banquet. We are hoping that Chris Dudley will be back this summer - he isn't doing a basketball camp because we don't have space, but he very much wanted to be back working with our kids. Also... Nikki Lang, who is a 16 year old singer with type 1... she has about the best voice I've heard in a young person. She'll be part of the teen program and will be singing at their dinner before the dance starts. Stay tuned for others!

Hi D-Dad. We'll have info about the Focus on Technology conference (Bethesda, MD, September 26-28) as soon as the Seattle conference is over. We usually post the info about 6 months out. It would definitely be appropriate for an 8 year old, because he would be in the elementary sessions. YOU would be the one hearing the technical sessions... and then you would be visiting all of the sponsors and exhibitors with all the new 'stuff' and explaining it to your son in terms he is comfortable with. Does that make sense?
Brenda H.  (216.68.227.23) Wed Jan 09 10:10:53 PM EST 2008
Just read back a bit. When a few of us were sitting near the "box" lunches on Sat. at Marco Isl., a woman from another conference, looked at the bags and asked the Marriott guy, "If these kids have diabetes, why are they eating chips? Our lunch was much healthier." The guy explained that they were Baked Lays and were with a wrap, grapes and a cookie. When she walked by three of us, I explained that kids with diabetes can eat anything they want, although we do encourage them to eat healthy foods. I tried to be polite, but wanted to smack her!

Yes, technology covers all kinds of topics. I'm excited about that one. We're working on topics and presenters now. Jeff (Brenda's husband) attends the Diabetes Tech meetings and listens to all of the speakers - and he invites those whom he thinks would be a good fit with our families and the 'feel' of our conferences.

Brenda H.  (216.68.227.23) Wed Jan 09 10:17:57 PM EST 2008
In my dreams, Chris T.
LMX-4 is an OTC numbing cream. Put on a dab and wipe it off with soap in 15-20 min. Many pumpers use it so they don't feel the infusion set insertion. It's gotta be on the site somewhere (Try the Products section).
Chris Trevor's dad  (70.160.178.117) Wed Jan 09 10:17:58 PM EST 2008

I know what you mean about others "speaking out" and saying "should she be eating that?" It can be quite irratating sometimes. When we first started with CWD we thought that the black shirts that say "Insulin is not a cure" were demeaning. Now that we have been involved with CWD 4 years we now totally get it!!!!![]()

BettyS: no guarantee he'll know. I called Marissa (3rd year of nursing school) to ask which body temp. reading was more accurate: ear thermometer or oral one. She asked her fellow nursing roomie and then said "If one is 101 and one is 103, just assume it's in the middle, 102." Hope they cover this topic SOON in one of her classes.![]()

Hi for a second... Read back, saw the comments re: temps. They vary depending on where taken, but ear temps have recently been found to be generally inaccurate. Rectal temps are about a degree higher than orals, which are usually about a degree higher than axillary. All are "accurate"
