Hi, I'm excited to hear about FFL. This year will be our first year.
You're going to have a great time! Chris, too. The tween program is really fun! Is Chris excited?
Our chat about CWD's upcoming Friends for Life conference starts in 10 min in the 'Friends for Life' room.
He isn't focused on it yet. We have an endocrinology appt tomorrow...he still gets nervous about them. He hates blood work and he is always afraid of surprise procedures.
He also has hypothyroidism so he probably gets more blood work than other T1-ers.

why whats happening
I think Sam was nervous about his appointments until he turned 17. The bloodwork doesn't bother him - I think he felt 'judged' in some respects by the numbers. He goes by himself now that he's in college. That is something I have trouble getting used to!

We've had summer here in Michigan... up until today. I had the heat on today! It was only in the lower 60's... and upper 40's tonight!
My little Baylee is never nervouse boutt endo appts she knows that she getts a free medic alert or a meder when we go
D related. With T1 you have a better chance of getting it...it is also an autoimmune disorder...like celiac.

Only ask - as I have thyroid disease - always a worry that Yas is at higher risk genetically and as complication.
We lost it again last night...no power for about 20 hours this time
Laura, I think being military hasn't helped. Chris has had diabetes 5 years and he is on his fourth endo. Each one has their own 'routine' and bedside manners are different.

My family is like an encycopedia of auto-immune diseases!!!
There are some disorders - celiac and thyroid among them - that seem to have a much higher incidence in families with type 1. At FFL, we have a wonderful speaker, Dr. Alessio Fasano, addressing celiac. I shall think about having a talk about other related disorders - like thyroid - next year. We've covered that topic in the past. Unhappily, it is quite relevant.

Yas' last celiac test was indicative - but not enough for a diagnosis - will retest in 3 months.

We get tested every 3 months for celiacs as well all negative so far

Generator - We had big storms this time last year - power was out for 9 days - Thank God we had a generator!!! and gas hot water!!
What day are you all arriving? My family gets there on Monday. It's nice to have a day to relax and prepare before things get crazy.

Hey Brenda! How goes the t-shirt packing? Chris O sent me a note that we would have 45 boxes of conference tees delivered on July 21! 45. That's not counting the boxes of shirts that you are sending!
If you are arriving Tues or Wed, please do consider a focus group. You get to have direct input into the products diabetes companies are making today; a good chance to have your voice be heard.
Laura--I will get them packed next week. Some are still in boxes from some other event.

On Weds, we do not have childcare. So yes, you do need to have someone watch Ryan. Some groups are open to all ages, so you may want to select those. Colleen can help you pick if you need those options.
I saw the sample: the T-shirts for this year's FFL are butter yellow with blue writing -- really nice.
Will the "Insulin is not the cure" bracelets be available?

If you need to bring a child along to focus groups, there are many groups marked "everyone" or "families"
Jen, I will ship a bunch of them, too. I have mostly adults, but will try to send some youth size, too.

Jen - Take a look at the ages that are specific for each group. They are right there on the schedule. Some are fine for tweens (and kids of all ages). Others are clearly just for adults - or clearly just for teens. If you have a question about a specific session, send me a note, ok?

That's a good idea, families going together. People hear things with 'different ears' - and when you are done with the focus group, you can discuss and everyone shares what they got out of it.
Either way is ok. I've sent Sam and Carolyn in the same photo before - and I've sent separate ones of them. Whatever works best for you.

does anyone have any ideas about quilts for life? I do not sew at all and am trying to start 2 at the same time, any suggestions would be appreciated
Brenda, is there some kind of deadline to ship the quilts? Ours is ready, just need to send it.
Lots of people print things from their computer onto iron-on transfers and then iron those designs and words onto fabric.
Suezt3, just look at the online gallery for ideas. Yep, iron-ons are a good idea. I had to practice to get them right.
We need the quilts here in OH by June 30.

There are some great ideas for Quilts if you go to the Quilt webpage and browse them. Some are pretty straightforward and not that hard to do. Brenda - do you still have blank quilt squares for purchase? If you get one of these, you can simply decorate it with iron on photos, fabric markers, some easy sewing if you are up to it. I'm not much of a seamstress, and I even managed to decorate one!
Chelsea - YES! Anyone! You could get a blank quilt and decorate it just as you'd like. Show the world All About Chelsea. Lots of kids have done this.
Quilts must be received by June 30, 2008 to be included in the Quilt for Life display on the National Mall in front of the US Capitol Building from dawn Monday, August 4, 2008 through dusk on Tuesday, August 5, 2008.

Dress code: Just think 'nice.' The girls tend to get pretty dressed up - sundresses, skirts, etc. The boys are a little less dressy, but they look very nice. Rule of thumb - no cut-offs or jeans. Khakis are fine.
he wants to wear nice shorts- claims he was too hot dancing in long pants... But, I'm still the boss - so it'll be nice slacks, I hope they're long enough for him...
He's thirilled- he heard from Max last week- and he'll be there ..
Didn't Sam (my Sam) wear his seersucker suit two years ago? Coat jacket was off in about 2 seconds. It was hot.

DD--we had a tornado warning here last Tues. when Jeff was out of town. Just Tim and I here. We gathered up some impt items--photo albums and such, the logs, about 20 quilts we have to pack for FFL and stayed in the basement. Tornadoes stayed away, but small funnel clouds were about one mile from us. I made sure those quilts were safe!

I am glad their will be international folks there! Craig needs to learn about traveling to other countries with his diabetes. He is going next summer to several different countries with the college band.

Mmmmmm...tri-tip. We use to live in Hanford, CA and did many tri-tips...only butchers on the east coast know what a tri-tip is.

Gary gave a swim clinic at one of the conferences -- it was really popular with the kids (and moms)
I'm really excited about two new program areas this year - the Grandparents program and the Young Adults program. Betty Brackenridge - speaking of gurus and queens - is leading the grandparents sessions, with Rachele and Bruce (online right now) hosting the rooms.
ColleenB, those west coast trips usually are not convenient for me. Someone has to stay here to get Tim to school, do the laundry, mow the lawn, etc.

Dr. Norma Kenyon (and her family) and Dr. Cherie Stabler (and her family) will be there from the DRI. They are both leading adult sessions - and they are doing a session called What's Up Doc with the Tweens, Elementary, and K groups.

Diabetes Dad, We also got to meet her and her daughter in April, we just moved here to south Florida and have been very involved with the DRI, she is incredible and the research they are doing is incredible

Also new this year - poster sessions with our faculty (not to mention dessert) on Friday evening. While the kids are carousing (well, sort of carousing) in their social events, the parents have dessert with the faculty. Good opportunity to ask questions, see their research presented on posters... and eat yummy chocolate dipped strawberries!

It's always better to have your own prescriptions on hand. Either way it's a pain (BTDT). Just isn't always that easy to track down a doc who isn't in the middle of a session when you need an Rx.

You and your brownies! They ARE good brownies. I've also ordered chocolate sheet cake, which, as anyone worth their weight in beans knows - is my absolute favorite. I always have to order it once per conference - and the leftovers go to my room!

Hi ColleenB, our kids get out of school in mid may, but they start back about Aug 15th. We are in Al, where are you located? Oh, my son starts college this year so he might start a little later.
if the teens are offsite, do they check-in with the parents at a specific time or s it up to the parents? Where are the tweens?
Jennifer - For the elementary group, yes, go fetch your kids. Tweens, you should set up a meeting place so you can hook up after sessions. For the 'under 6 crowd', you need to sign them out at lunch time. You also need to go visit them at snack time to check on them and pick what snack you'd like them to have. Best if you don't take them out. That starts getting into a lot of time.
How early do the buses come to the Residence Inn ... to make sure the teens make it to where they are going on Thurs/Fri?
Don't miss the bus.
Jennifer, you have to go to the Elem room to pick up your kids, I believe.
Working on the bus schedules now. No worries - they will be plenty early. I do recommend eating at your hotel (whether you're staying at the Residence Inn, Courtyard, or Renaissance - the breakfasts are similar). That cuts time.

Teani, I live in Seattle. We have friends in Arizona that have been out of school for a month already -- they let them out before it gets too hot there, and then they start back up Aug. 01...
Sorry Laura, I deleted part of the message. It was 3 years ago at the Coronado when we made this great discovery.
The teens are offsite and you do not need to worry about them. They are with our staff. If there is a concern, we will find YOU. Otherwise, they will be back around 5:00 or so.

And believe me---not to worry---they will find you---I'venever seen that happen as smoothly as it needs to....
Ah. I'm pretty certain the brownies at the Renaissance do not have Sorbitol. We try to stay away from sugar alcohols and other stuff that is bad for GI.

Laura, has anyone ever suggested to CWD to sign up for the Marriott Rewards Programs? It helps out some down the road after you stay, you earn, well rewards!

We had no problem at the Renaissance and YES THE BROWNIES AND THE OTHER FOOD FANTASTIC!

Well I'm 5o and the worrying thing hasn't ended yet so don't hold your breath
To give an example - one year at MGM, one of the teens did not show up for check in at 2:00 (at check in, Natalie and staff give the kids the once-over, check bgs if a teen has type 1, and makes sure everything is ok). He was in line for a ride and didn't feel like getting out of line to check in. Chris Tull, CWD's head of security (and on the teen staff), found him within 5 minutes, and he was on his way back to his parents within 10. Now - had that been a medical concern, the fact that he didn't check in would have alerted us to find him and help him. We did find him.
I think the teens will be back no later than 5, plenty of time to shower and dress.
Friday, teens will be back from the park around 5:30 or so. The dinner dance is at 8. I know it's late, but hey, they need time to get ready!
