Sarah and friends are already counting the days. I don't have to keep track. She missed it so much last year. Hard to be two places at once.

On a conference-related note, there are lots and lots of college students emailing me asking about the Young Adults program this year. I think it is going to be a big success! Great energy in these 'kids.'

Good to know! My daughter gave me questions to ask in the chat tonight...one of which is "How many other kids my age can i meet?" We're in that stage where we are needing to make contact with others that live with this condition. Feeling a bit isolated!!
Wendy type 1/pumper, quilt square number 488  (24.0.228.138) Wed Feb 18 09:01:54 PM EST 2009
Laura,..our post office is so slow it is probably there....I just got a little worried...also my father is notorious for throwing things out...
Michelle mom of Ian, age 8, dx 9/05  (70.22.207.68) Wed Feb 18 09:01:59 PM EST 2009
Jill, your daughter will obviously be with my son. :) so there's 1.

Billetdeaux CWD Events, Sam's mom, dx'd 8/98  (76.226.137.90) Wed Feb 18 09:02:44 PM EST 2009
I saw that Kerri posted it on her blog. Very cool! There will be a young adult outing to one of the water parks on Tuesday... our own Marissa Hitchcock is behind that one! Should be fun. In the late afternoon, the young adults have a reception (so if you can't make it in the morning to the water park, come to the reception later)

Billetdeaux CWD Events, Sam's mom, dx'd 8/98  (76.226.137.90) Wed Feb 18 09:03:03 PM EST 2009
My guess is there will be at least 300 children in each age group. Very similar to last year.
Michelle mom of Ian, age 8, dx 9/05  (70.22.207.68) Wed Feb 18 09:03:31 PM EST 2009
Laura - is it 8/9 for the age group?
Pam L. mom to Sarah, 16, dx 6/19/02  (24.130.15.195) Wed Feb 18 09:03:42 PM EST 2009
Hi Jill! Once you get to the conference you won't feel isolated at all. You are truly going to make friends for life. It is an unbelievable experience!
Anne Marie mom of Austin, age 10  (67.81.65.11) Wed Feb 18 09:03:47 PM EST 2009
I have questions from my son as well! Laura, will sports central be back? and will Chris Dudley do his basketball camp again? Austin is old enough this time.
Jill Mom of 8 year old with type1, 4yr old and 22 month old  (173.66.90.38) Wed Feb 18 09:03:47 PM EST 2009
Michelle, woo hoo! Is he in 2nd grade?
mom2tinks mom of Isabella, dx @ 23 months  (216.139.31.96) Wed Feb 18 09:04:05 PM EST 2009
Katherine will make the age 9 group with Ian
Billetdeaux CWD Events, Sam's mom, dx'd 8/98  (76.226.137.90) Wed Feb 18 09:04:15 PM EST 2009
Remember that this year we will subdivide the elementary group into 6/7 year old children and 8/9 year old children. There are some things they will do together (like the afternoon session with DJ Miles and the Scavenger Hunt) - but other activities will be done in the much smaller groups.
Brenda mom of Marissa, 21, dx'd 9/89  (216.68.227.239) Wed Feb 18 09:04:16 PM EST 2009
Jeff once penned Marissa "Julie the Cruise Director." Of course, if you're not 35 or older, you have no clue what I'm talking about!![]()
Brenda mom of Marissa, 21, dx'd 9/89  (216.68.227.239) Wed Feb 18 09:04:36 PM EST 2009
No bball camp.

I have to 2nd or probably 3rd exactly what Pam said....

Anyone else on here with a soon to be 7 year old?
Michelle mom of Ian, age 8, dx 9/05  (70.22.207.68) Wed Feb 18 09:05:09 PM EST 2009
Jill - Ian's in 3rd grade - so by the summer he'll be almost 9 going into 4th. But that hard matters. Can mom2tinks non-d daughter will be in that group too. And Cami's son. I think there will be a lot of us, first timers, with kids that age.

Billetdeaux CWD Events, Sam's mom, dx'd 8/98  (76.226.137.90) Wed Feb 18 09:05:30 PM EST 2009
Sports Central will be open Tuesday through Friday. Tues and Weds are 'open gym' (watched over by the Sports Central staff, led by Rick Philbin). Thurs/Fri there will be scheduled sessions with the Sports Central athletes during the day; each of the kids' groups will meet the athletes and get to have some SC time.
Chris Dudley will not have a bball clinic at FFL this year.

Laura, At some point is there a scheduleposted for the kids? My boys are excited, but they keep asking what they will be doing while Mommy, Daddy and Nonnie are in "school"?
Billetdeaux CWD Events, Sam's mom, dx'd 8/98  (76.226.137.90) Wed Feb 18 09:06:13 PM EST 2009
For the Young Adults Water Park day - you can buy tickets at the hotel or at the water park. No need to do so in advance... wait and see if the weather cooperates!
Michelle mom of Ian, age 8, dx 9/05  (70.22.207.68) Wed Feb 18 09:06:25 PM EST 2009

What time/day does on site registration sign in begin?
Billetdeaux CWD Events, Sam's mom, dx'd 8/98  (76.226.137.90) Wed Feb 18 09:07:02 PM EST 2009
There will be a schedule posted for the kids. Probably in the next month or so. We wait to get a better idea of 'how many kids in each group' and 'which faculty person has which great idea that they want to do with which age group.' If I post it way ahead of time and then change things, it messes everyone up!![]()
Pam L. mom to Sarah, 16, dx 6/19/02  (24.130.15.195) Wed Feb 18 09:07:12 PM EST 2009

So registration can be at any time during the day until like around 4p or so? Just trying to "plan" the day
Billetdeaux CWD Events, Sam's mom, dx'd 8/98  (76.226.137.90) Wed Feb 18 09:08:18 PM EST 2009
I'll have to check, Pam. We have about 1,000 people registered already, which is well ahead of last year's registration. So, count on about the same size group plus maybe a few more. In May or early June, I'll do a real count to get us better actual numbers.
Michelle mom of Ian, age 8, dx 9/05  (70.22.207.68) Wed Feb 18 09:08:45 PM EST 2009
Jill, have you been on the CWD message boards? There are so many people - you'll instantly not feel alone anymore.

Ack, don't recall seeing that show in reruns. Don't think I'd watch it anyway.
Back to business.

Billetdeaux CWD Events, Sam's mom, dx'd 8/98  (76.226.137.90) Wed Feb 18 09:10:46 PM EST 2009
If you've already pre-registered for the conference, just stop by registration on Tuesday and pick up your stuff - name badges, shirts, programs, etc. It's good to do that early. You are going to be very busy on Weds with focus groups and other things. Plus - once you start wearing your name badge around the hotel, everyone knows you are one of The Very Cool People.![]()

No I haven't...I do belong to a yahoo group that is very active here in Northern Va, and that has helped a LOT since diagnosis. Especially when I was just trying to absorb all the info about this complicated condition, it helped even to be a fly on the wall. I feel like I learned a new language these past 6 months! But I will check those messg boards out. My daughter wants to make a quilt (we watched the FFL video), are the instructions posted under the conference on the site? thought I saw a link...
LOVED the Love Boat, and Fantasy Island...trusty Sat night line up.

Forgot to mention - IMPORTANT - childcare registration forms are online now. I'll send a message to the FFL email list reminding you. If you have a child younger than age 6, please sign up for childcare asap. Childcare is divided into 3 groups: K age (led by Pam L on this chat right now), PreK, and toddler/younger. We have CDEs right in the childcare rooms. Everyone does a really great job.

Last year we were early - no one was checked in yet but there were a lot of kids at the pool that we presumed were for FFL. Most were, except the one boy my son befriended! After we got our wristbands it was easier to get the FFL kids together. (BTW, this boy was BEGGING his parents to come to FFL next year!)

Anyone who wants a square should send a $25 check to us at
Children with Diabetes, Inc.
8216 Princeton-Glendale Road, PMB 200
West Chester, OH 45069-1675
You can put in a note requesting a color, but I cannot guarantee that I will have the color you want. All the squares are pastels, usu. a small print on one side, plain on the other. My m-in-law made them.

The frio packs work great. Sarah used hers in Israel last summer. 5 weeks and the insulin stayed cool the whole time. The frio packs are these water activated evaporated cooling packs that keep insulin cool in warm climates. Just like Orlando in July. Sarah leaves for Israel a few days after FFL and will be using them again.

Re: bringing supplies... we do not encourage the elementary kids to bring all of their supplies - 300 test kits that all look the same would be an absolute nightmare. Now, if your child wants to bring an easily identifiable backpack to leave on the table by the door, that is ok. Note, however, that you will be with your child every 75 minutes, testing bg, having snack, getting a potty break... so you will be in charge of diabetes mgmt. If your child does not feel well or doesn't look well, we check bg immediately and will come get you.

Frios are these little pouches with gel beads in them and after you soak them in water the gel swells. Then over the course of the next 72 hours as the water evaporates it keeps the contents of the pouch at a comfy temp of about 50 to 60 degress. It keeps insulin or pens or pumps cool!
Pam L. mom to Sarah, 16, dx 6/19/02  (24.130.15.195) Wed Feb 18 09:24:27 PM EST 2009

Everyone at FFL wears a wristband. People with type 1 wear a green wristband; people without type 1 wear an orange wristband. People with celiac wear a yellow wristband. That helps us identify 1) who is with our group 2) who has type 1, especially if they are acting oddly and may need help, and 3) who is allowed to be at the gluten free buffets!

Yes! Cards in meters. and also parents schedules and cell phone numbers written on the back of the child's name tag. YES, we treat lows immediately - we have a CDE in each room who helps with lows. One of the staff will come get you. Same with highs, btw. We won't give insulin, but we'll come get you so you can make a decision what to do.

it is a cupcake maker by GirlGourmet. It takes 30 seconds to make a cupcake and the ingredients list are amazing. The majority of the mixes are gluten free. They contain milk, egg and soy but are tree/nut free if I am not mistaken.
they sell them at walmart for $20 and the refills are kind of expensive but worth it for the kids to enjoy parties.

Billetdeaux CWD Events, Sam's mom, dx'd 8/98  (76.226.137.90) Wed Feb 18 09:42:23 PM EST 2009
The rule of thumb is 'comfortable.' I find the convention area pretty cold with the AC... so I wear capris and conference shirts the entire time. For the banquet, I do wear a sundress - you might want to dress up a little. It's a fun evening - dinner, dancing, some great entertainment. Family-friendly. The teen dinner dance, tween social, and Young Adult Dinner and Salsa Dancing are definitely fancier.

I've not heard whether Chris or Jay will be with us. I know that we are not having a bball clinic; rather, we'll have Sports Central open all week from Tues to Friday; kids and adults who want to play b-ball or v-ball will have plenty of air-conditioned opportunity! We tend to hear a bit closer to the actual conference dates who the VIPs will be. The companies bring them.

Character breakfast - I always request the princes and princesses, but since Disney doesn't guarantee the ones you request are the ones you'll actually get, I don't announce them. I don't want any disappointed kiddos! On Thurs at the Banquet, Minnie and Mickey will pay a visit. Probably another set of characters as well. again, I'm not sure which.

Mary Catherine Amelia's Mom, 10, pumping ,celiac  (98.231.157.142) Wed Feb 18 09:59:27 PM EST 2009
The trick to security screening with pumps is to take off any metal clips. Use plastic ones. Push the pump to the center of your belly as far away from the walls of the screening portal as possible. Practice what might happen with the little ones so they know what to expect. Make it a game. Show them what it's like to be wanded. The screeners are very friendly with the little kids but parents need to remember not to interfere. Stand back and let them do their jobs.
