Laura, first of all I can't thank you enough for what you do ! I have some important matters to discuss with you privately, however, is it me or is this conference really needed at this time of the year for other kids....mine is about desperate right now and needs the "regeneration"

Registered User Patti Mom of Casey 15  (71.246.17.104) Thu Jun 10 08:55:43 PM EDT 2010
No Laura, we're taking " a vacation from diabetes" as my kid puts it..not really...R & R at Bahama Bay

Registered User Laura Billetdeaux CWD Events, Sam's mom, dx'd 8/98  (76.226.197.66) Thu Jun 10 08:56:39 PM EDT 2010
I think we all need the regeneration. Staff and volunteers included. The week is exhausting, but it just 'fills you right up' with all kinds of good things, don't you think? It's my favorite week of the year.

Registered User Carol Mom of 7, 1 t1 daughter  (65.209.145.237) Thu Jun 10 08:57:25 PM EDT 2010
Are you saying we will need a vacation from the vacation, that is FFL?

The teens are going to have a blast at Epcot. Their home base is the Odyssey building, which has lots of elbow room and is air conditioned! It's the first time we're doing a 'field trip' to Epcot. Disney has been very helpful.

Robyn - to your earlier point... there isn't much around the MWC. My sense of this group is that there will be a lot of people with vehicles, and there are lots of places pretty close by, just not walkable (no sidewalks, etc.)

Tree all gone--I got horribly sunburned shredding the bulk of it into mulch. And, yes, I did apply sunscreen. I was essentially outside from 9 to 4:15 on Friday working away. Next job is repairing the 9' x 20' area where the county dug up the lawn to fix a water leak. Frown  We had one of the nicest lawns in the neighborhood. Will take a few years to fix it.

Of course I remember Skye's video. It was beautiful. Is she bringing her guitar? A couple years ago, several of the teens from Russia brought their guitars, and we had impromptu concerts in the evening... in the lobby!

Yes, focus groups are still open. There are some that are full, and they are marked. If you can't decide ahead of time, just go a few minutes before the sessions begin, and ask the group leader if you can sit in. Many times, there are no-shows or extra seats.

Patti, just make sure the kids' phones are in a very secure place (not a slippery pocket Rolling Eyes ). They use them to contact each other and, on rare occasion, their parents!

The elementary group usually has about 250-300 kids spread between the 4 ages (6/7 and 8/9). It's a LOT of kids. We have a LOT of staff, too. More this year than any other year.

Chelsea - All of our conferences, regionals and FFL gatherings, are set up pretty much the same way. The first day for the teens is spent in sessions and the 2nd day is offsite doing something fun. You have to go to the first day in order to go to the 2nd (we plan the 2nd day on the first, so it is mandatory). Just like in Orlando - teens have to attend Thursday in order to go to Epcot on Friday!

Major differences... hmmm. Mostly geographic. Coronado is situated around the lake in short buildings. The MWC is very tall - like the Renaissance Sea World but bigger - so the rooms aren't that far from the Convention Center. But the Convention Center itself is HUGE - we are only using about half of it. So it's a lot of walking. Otherwise, it's the same 'flow' as other years... which I like. The familiarity of having the same flow is very helpful when in a new venue! Also, Mike has been working very hard on getting the menus just right.

Also - another difference - the MWC has several giant ballrooms and fewer smaller breakout rooms. So, you might remember some years when we've had 10-12 sessions for parents going at the same time at Disney... this year, there are maybe 5 or so. Bigger rooms, larger sessions. And easier to make up your mind!

The tweens this year will be in smaller groups - not giant groups of 10, 11, and 12 year olds. We have a lot more staff working with the tweens, so the kids will each know the one adult staff person they can go to if there is a concern. Larger groups than the elementary works in, and smaller than the teens.

I would like a report back from everyone after the conference: definition of 'what is usual at the FFL conference' - that actually would be a very fun survey! Do you remember in 2000 when someone's infusion set was floating in the pool - and we made all the kids get out of the water so we could check and see whose was missing?

Carol - You don't need to put your insulin in a frio on the plane. Just in the hot parks; or if you're going to one of the water parks and your pool bag is with you - have the frio there as well. Or some method of keeping the insulin cool (not frozen).

How many days does the Frio last? When do you need to re-soak it? Our neighbor called to ask and I didn't know the answer. Of course, I can't contact her now because she should be on a plane going to Anchorage. I gave her Michelle B's phone number for any diabetes emergencies. The family that is traveling is the family whose 14-year old was diagnosed about a month ago.

that's what i wondered too, the extra that is suppose to be kept refrigerated? how much to bring, on the plane with an icepack?

Registered User Brenda mom of Marissa, 22, dx'd 9/89  (216.68.227.240) Thu Jun 10 10:02:34 PM EDT 2010
Serena, we would always take twice the usual amount, esp. if flying. Of course, the year I froze insulin in the hotel fridge, I spent two hours driving around to find more becasue it ALL froze.

I found the Frio doesn't keep it "fridge" cold if you need that - like insulin you only carry for emergencies

Registered User Laura Billetdeaux CWD Events, Sam's mom, dx'd 8/98  (76.226.197.66) Thu Jun 10 10:03:50 PM EDT 2010
Not sure if they are going to be at the conference. Yes, when we use a frio pack, it lasts all day. You don't need to refrigerate the insulin you are bringing on the plane - even the extra. We don't even keep ours in the fridge in the hotel room. The hotel rooms are about 70 degrees, and that is plenty cool for insulin for the week.

Wendy - we gotta talk about Universal - the kids are asking!

Registered User Brenda mom of Marissa, 22, dx'd 9/89  (216.68.227.240) Thu Jun 10 10:04:49 PM EDT 2010
And, if you are flying, your child (or self) with diabetes is allowed to carry a separate bag for medical supplies, including water and juice.

Registered User Carol Mom of 7, 1 t1 daughter  (65.209.145.237) Thu Jun 10 10:05:00 PM EDT 2010
I wondered about the flight. simply because even spare vials sent home from the clinic they keep on ice.

Registered User Wendy type 1/pumper, quilt square number 488  (68.36.62.87) Thu Jun 10 10:05:04 PM EDT 2010

Thanks for the reminder Brenda. I am planning on packing her D bag as full as i can. But i never thought about adding a water bottle.

Registered User Wendy type 1/pumper, quilt square number 488  (68.36.62.87) Thu Jun 10 10:05:40 PM EDT 2010
Carol..as a general rule you don't need to keep it cold...don't want to leave it in a "hot" car or out in the sun

Registered User Wendy type 1/pumper, quilt square number 488  (68.36.62.87) Thu Jun 10 10:05:58 PM EDT 2010

To be on the safe side (and in case you're stuck on a hot plane for three hours), you can use a Frio. I'd avoid an ice pack unless you have it wrapped well enough that the insulin will not freeze.

Registered User Carol William, 8, dx'd 3-10-04, pumping since 10/22/04  (71.178.48.4) Thu Jun 10 10:06:58 PM EDT 2010
Wendy - can you email me the details of where you are staying, etc? supposing you don't want to post it here.

Registered User Wendy type 1/pumper, quilt square number 488  (68.36.62.87) Thu Jun 10 10:07:14 PM EDT 2010
yep I will Carol...

When I put the insulin around ice (or a hotel fridge) I put it in one of those disposable ziploc containers and wrap it in a wash cloth or something similar to keep it from making contact with the ice

Registered User Brenda mom of Marissa, 22, dx'd 9/89  (216.68.227.240) Thu Jun 10 10:08:47 PM EDT 2010

Thanks Brenda. It's on my wish list. Not sure if I will get one before we leave. But for the Mid july road trip to NC I think I will. Our flight will be just under 4 hours.

Registered User Carol Mom of 7, 1 t1 daughter  (65.209.145.237) Thu Jun 10 10:09:40 PM EDT 2010
Carol-good idea. gives me an idea of how to pack it, and it might fit in her D bag that way.

Registered User Carol Mom of 7, 1 t1 daughter  (65.209.145.237) Thu Jun 10 10:09:50 PM EDT 2010

I mean the hard plastic containers - not the ziploc bags.
Goodnight Brenda!

I figured that's what you meant. can sit on top of her other stuff. I keep an old wipe box full of her immediate needs and stuff it in her d bag when we travel.
