I was talking to my dad today about all the inspirational celebrities that speak at FFL. Jay makes us all feel like we could run an Ironman with him. Joe S makes us all feel normal & have fun. Nicole shows us that we can do anything & overcome everything. etc etc etc He was really impressed.
Mike S - what was the temperature today? I'm a little concerned about the heat. We'll need to remind the kids (and parents!) to stay hydrated.

I remember the year that there was a hurricane that skirted the west coast of FL at the same time we held FFL - we had delightful weather... in the low 80's breezy, and a bit overcast.
Same here my daighter is very carb controled at 60 carbs.

It is brutal here, I have suffered heat stroke twice and I have worked at Disney for 9 years, weather is different this year.
Barbie - We don't use 'Disney menus' - we have CWD menus. They have portion sizes and carb counts for every morsel of food that is out on a buffet table. Carb counting is very easy.

We had new shirts made this year (reflecting the 10,000 steps). I think they are white with cardinal lettering... but I could entirely be making that up. I ordered them a long time ago!

Oh no, Julia, now I will check and see if they are headed our way. We have one brief storm earlier. Parts of Cincinnati got 7 inches yesterday afternoon! We got 3/8 inch.

Barbie - there will be SO many parents there to help you if you have a question - and Mike is there at every single meal and snack break and you can ask him anything. I know it's scary, but take a deep breath and just jump into it!
This is the craziest weather that we are having across the nation. We were just ahead of the tornadoes when we were driving to Boston. Had NO idea. Just thought it was windy and only a little rain. HUGE storm right after we made it to Boston. I guess ignorance is bliss.

Hi Everyone, we are looking forward to our first FFL. We did cruise with CWD several years ago.
it is really weird...they just popped up out of nowhere...the weather men were even puzzled...they have completely circled the city...

Ooooh, sky to the west is eerie shades of gray and rose. It stays light here until 9:30 so it's not normal. I'll hear sirens should they go off. No other noise here tonight.

He will see many teens on the pump. One of Sarah's friends decided to go on the pump after watching Sarah and other kids pumping for a few days at FFL.
Dawn, it's better to purchase tix in advance if you get the right price. Those lines at the Coronado can get very long.
Everyone please address your conference questions to me (email is fine). Conference arrangements are different than usual Disney protocol.
The problem with that Brenda is we were planning on going on Saturday after the scavanger hunt and I dont want to purchase them if my little guy is too tired. LOL I just like to cover all the bases...
I am not sure if you can still purchase it, I could make a call and find out, but I would think you could. I also wanted to buy one for my father, Noah's grandfather and someone at the childrens with diabetes website told me I had to purchase one once I got there. So I am going with that.

FFL has first priority for our family in the summer. Everything is planned around that week.
Pam - I think it is SO cool that 'kids' like Sarah, Jesse, Kara, Ralph, Ellen, and so many others are going to be staff this year. Also, so many of our kids are in nursing school. It's amazing.

Sarah has declared her major early. Human biology/pre-med. Before dx, she wanted to be a vet. Now she wants to be a doctor.
Remember that every room has a refrigerator, so if there are snacks or beverages that your kids (or you) just have to have - bring them! I plan to do a grocery stop on the way to the hotel (I love the sf minute maid lemonade).
It's our "normal" week. (or norman for the old Rugrats fans)

I love that there is a social media like fb that lets our kids stay in touch no matter where they live and continue to build friendships throughout the years. The conference lives up to it's name.

We are definitely counting the days. We are leaving Sunday to visit grandparents then on to Orlando to tour parks before CWD.
And, remember, check the fridge temp BEFORE you put your insulin in it. Insulin can and will freeze, then you have to drive out of Disney to find more, BTDT.
He has an internship with the Federal Reserve Bank in Chicago this summer
Stacey and I are really excited about working with the kids again this year. We have planned fun activities. A good time will be had by all!

Avohra - The sleeping rooms? Not giant, but certainly big enough. With the renovations the Resort completed last year, there's a bit more 'moving around' space as the furniture was downsized just a touch. We've been holding FFL conferences at the Coronado since 2001, and it's always been very comfortable for a family of 4 (especially with 2 small children).

Hello Avohra! Your son Arjun will be with some lovely and loving individuals with his age group. There are age appropriate crafts, games and too many things to list that keep them occupied. Also, those children with diabetes are in the best of hands as there are at least 2 CDE's in the room with the group leaders. A fabulous child adult ratio!
I just love seeing kids wearing their pumps like badges of honor!! No one hides it at FFL !

thanks. we are real excited for our boys. this will definitely will be the biggest event for Arjun our 3 year old with type 1 ever. we do hope he can see others like him and get to make some friends for life!

Still wondering if I should bring Noah's brother, he is 9. Will there be a group of siblings of diabetic area and what will they do for fun while we attend sessions?
one year, Jesse made friends with the waffle cook.. she gave him 6 of them... for the regular price...
Love the Mickey waffles - took pics of them our 1st time there. LOL
Our rooms are spread out across the resort. It's a giant resort. Plan well in the morning and try to bring everything you'll need so that you don't need to run back around the lake to fetch something you forgot!

Barbie - Please look at the conference website. The sessions for children are for kids with type 1 AND siblings. Roughly half of the children at the conference are sibs.
also. if your room is far from the convention center- they have buses that run around the perimeter thru the parking lot
Pepper Market: a place where they seat you and get your drinks. You then take the card they provide and walk into the food area where you ask for food from the various "stations." There is stir fry, Mexican, typical American (burgers, hot dogs, pizza), salads, bakery, etc. They stamp your card and you pay the cashier as you are leaving. Trying to explain this to first timers who may arrive early and not know how it works.

Siblings are part of every session in their age groups. Nobody is left out.

Definitely bring the whole family! There are sessions for the siblings in the elementary group. Other sessions are all kids 6-9 with or without diabetes age-specific group activities.

Pepper Market breakfast has the Mickey waffles and such.
Barbie, the siblings have a wonderful time at the sessions. The activities are geared for all kids. My son found it to be a great experience.
Barbie, our non-D son, has a great time. He is almost 12 and will be in the Tween groups. Siblings have a great time!

I would not count on buses running frequently. If you have a vehicle with you, it's fine to drive around to the Convention Center and park... or leave with enough lead time and catch the bus.

Avohra, we drove. You can walk, just takes a few extra minutes.
The Resort is spread out around the lake. If you are in Casita 1-3, you are right next to the Convention Center. If you are in Cabana 9, you are next to the Convention Center on the other side. If you're in the Ranchos, you are across the lake. So, it depends. But, do not hesitate to use your vehicle to get from one place to the next. Whatever is easiest for you is what you should do.
We arrive on Sunday. Sarah has a job and needed to schedule the time off.
We are arriving on the 1st as well, but we are staying in Daytona Beach so we all can attend a Nascar race...
We are really excited about the young adult focus groups Wednesday! The walk isn't too bad depending on where you hotel rooms are Avohra--may need a stroller for little ones but it shouldn't be too bad.

avohra, it depends on where your room is. If your room is in the Casitas, it might be worth it to drive. It is walkable, but the heat/rain can be an issue, esp. with little ones.

Yes, the Diabetes Scholars Foundation is hosting a Golf Fore Education on Tuesday at Disney's Osprey Ridge. Funds raised will be used to bring families to conferences. Yes, breaks and meals on Thurs and Fri. are with the parents. You have to go to the child care area to get them. They are pretty careful and don't hand over the kids to just anyone.

Hey, I have a question for you all... for the scavenger hunt, do you think it would be unrealistic to ask for a photo of your team in front of something? Do you think everyone owns a digital camera of some sort, phone or camera?
And Jo's son James is also golfing with his girlfriend so there will lots of young adults - but i think his girlfriend is on the golf team at her college so she must be really good
avohra- all the kids have breaks and lunch with the parents - we, in childcare , don't feed or give insulin to them...
The flights were just a bit too much for us this year...even out of Buffalo was double what it was last year
Childcare... for the a.m. and p.m. short breaks, you will come to the childcare area where we will have snack food for you to select and give to your child. For lunch (we have a 90 minute break on Thurs and 2 hours on Fri), you will pick up the kids from childcare and take them to lunch with you. We offer the childcare snack breaks right in the room to cut down on check-in/check-out procedure time.

Two teen questions - the email said they should choose sessions but it looks like all the sessions are designated for specific groups (girls, boys, with/without tyoe 1, etc.)

Hey Mike! Did you get some colorful sharpies for the signature quilt?
For teens, there are some timeframes where they can choose sessions. They are split into age groups because there are so many teens. There are specific sessions for them at certain times, such as Boy Talk with Jim/Korey for ages 15-17, then Boy Talk or ages 13-14. Etc.

That's a bigger question than I can answer on the chat. Some of the focus groups are full; the ones that you are still able to sign up for (i.e., the sign-up allows you to do so) have descriptions online. My inclination is to tell you to see how your family feels on Weds, do the Fun Run at 7:30! - have breakfast, and then walk down to the focus group area and see if any of the walk-in groups look interesting to you. It's hard to predict with young children what the 'mood' of the day is going to be!
Hopefully I can meet you and your son, we should be there on the 2nd if all goes well with the drive

There are some focus groups where children are very welcome. Others that are just for parents. Or just for teens. Or just for adults with type 1. The 'intended audience' is specified in the group description.
