We actually had a tornado touch down about 2 miles from where we live...it was small, but did make a mess. Only one building damaged...but lots of trees down

Registered User Bruce & Rachele Grandparents of Kyle, dx'd at 7  (98.15.248.199) Thu Jun 19 08:57:43 PM EDT 2008
Tornados are not at all common around here.

Registered User BettyB Diabetes Educator  (68.106.17.198) Thu Jun 19 08:59:17 PM EDT 2008

Registered User Billetdeaux CWD Events  (76.226.142.199) Thu Jun 19 09:00:16 PM EDT 2008
Yes - a LOT of grandparents. Some adding on to family registrations last minute.

Registered User BettyB Diabetes Educator  (68.106.17.198) Thu Jun 19 09:00:23 PM EDT 2008
well, looks like Laura popped in and right back out again - so who wants to talk about what?

Registered User Bruce & Rachele Grandparents of Kyle, dx'd at 7  (98.15.248.199) Thu Jun 19 09:00:56 PM EDT 2008
Do you have a Grand headcount?

Registered User BettyB Diabetes Educator  (68.106.17.198) Thu Jun 19 09:01:13 PM EDT 2008
NIFTY!! let's max out the Damselfish Room!

somebody is coming in and out as the users count changes

Registered User Bruce & Rachele Grandparents of Kyle, dx'd at 7  (98.15.248.199) Thu Jun 19 09:02:24 PM EDT 2008
It's just after 9 PM .....who do we have out there?

Registered User Billetdeaux CWD Events  (76.226.142.199) Thu Jun 19 09:03:20 PM EDT 2008
I actually don't have a headcount because I didn't ask for adult ages on the registration forms. So, sometimes I can't tell - if there are extra adults - whether that is a college person or a grandparent!
I just sent a note to the g-parents list to remind anyone who might be on.

Registered User Billetdeaux CWD Events  (76.226.142.199) Thu Jun 19 09:04:39 PM EDT 2008
The FFL chat started out very slowly this week - by halfway through, I could barely keep up with the conversation. I think this is a busy time of year. I also should have sent a reminder this morning, and I didn't. I'm sorry. Carolyn is here from NYU - just visiting a couple of days - and this was Mom + Daughter day.

Registered User BettyB Diabetes Educator  (68.106.17.198) Thu Jun 19 09:04:54 PM EDT 2008
Thanks, Laura - while we wait for a crowd, is these anything Bruce and Rachele would like to start a discussion on?

Registered User BettyB Diabetes Educator  (68.106.17.198) Thu Jun 19 09:05:55 PM EDT 2008
aw, too bad it's such a short visit. How's she doing?

Registered User Bruce & Rachele Grandparents of Kyle, dx'd at 7  (98.15.248.199) Thu Jun 19 09:06:00 PM EDT 2008
How's it going with your book?

Registered User Diane Mom of Alex 13, pumping  (68.194.15.62) Thu Jun 19 09:06:46 PM EDT 2008
Hi! I'm not a grandparent, just a parent  LOL but I have a question if it is alright.

Registered User Bruce & Rachele Grandparents of Kyle, dx'd at 7  (98.15.248.199) Thu Jun 19 09:07:01 PM EDT 2008

It's "in the bag" until I see a proof from the printer - hopefully next week. The last week of editing has been intense but I think it's a lot better than when you guys saw it.

Hi Lisa, please do

Registered User BettyB Diabetes Educator  (68.106.17.198) Thu Jun 19 09:08:56 PM EDT 2008
Like frasier, I'm listening, lisa!

Registered User Diane Mom of Alex 13, pumping  (68.194.15.62) Thu Jun 19 09:10:24 PM EDT 2008
My son is on the pump and we got a perscription from the endo for Lantus just in case something happened to the pump while at sea. My sons insulin basal is about 33 units for the day, the doctor said we should use about 20 units of Lantus. When I spoke to the NE a few months later, she said to use 33 units for the Lantus. The doctors sometimes get the doses wrong. Who should I listen to if something should happen to the pump?

Registered User lisa b mother of Yasmine7 diagnosed @ 4 (Australian)  (59.101.58.208) Thu Jun 19 09:10:28 PM EDT 2008
Last 2 weeks Yas has good numbers daytime - going high overnight no ketones - no extra carbs - heaps of corrections and increase in dinner bolus - think it could be growth spurt - would this fit the pattern of a gowth spurt??

Registered User Steph Gramma to Ally,13, dx'd at 8  (71.243.59.143) Thu Jun 19 09:11:47 PM EDT 2008
I almost forgot about the chat, my daughter reminded me a few days ago, I am glad Laura sent the email just now

Thank you

Registered User BettyB Diabetes Educator  (68.106.17.198) Thu Jun 19 09:13:29 PM EDT 2008
Hi Diane - generally pump doses area bit lower than doses of injected insulin because. Does Alex have any basal rates that are a lot lower than the others?

Registered User Steph Gramma to Ally,13, dx'd at 8  (71.243.59.143) Thu Jun 19 09:14:15 PM EDT 2008
I think Ally's been doing good the past week, I haven't heard any different, tonight was the diabetic families group my daughter runs once a month

Registered User BettyB Diabetes Educator  (68.106.17.198) Thu Jun 19 09:14:34 PM EDT 2008
Lisa - having the highs in the morning could be hormones - do you know when they start to rise? is it middle of the night or in the morning hours?

Registered User Diane Mom of Alex 13, pumping  (68.194.15.62) Thu Jun 19 09:14:48 PM EDT 2008
Yes, he has 4 different basal rates. 12:00am-6:00am being the lowest.

Registered User BettyB Diabetes Educator  (68.106.17.198) Thu Jun 19 09:15:04 PM EDT 2008
Hi Steph - welcoem back!

Registered User Steph Gramma to Ally,13, dx'd at 8  (71.243.59.143) Thu Jun 19 09:16:07 PM EDT 2008
Thank you the kids are all out of school--all the grand children

Registered User lisa b mother of Yasmine7 diagnosed @ 4 (Australian)  (59.101.58.208) Thu Jun 19 09:16:31 PM EDT 2008
After 9.30/10pm - 2/3am - morning readings before breakfast good thru to after supper.

Registered User BettyB Diabetes Educator  (68.106.17.198) Thu Jun 19 09:17:35 PM EDT 2008
The Lantus would be giving about 1.4 units per hour at 33 units - if that's a lot higher than his lowest basal, it would probably make sense to use less than 33 Lantus - of course, check BG's lots if doing this, especially middle of the night

Registered User BettyB Diabetes Educator  (68.106.17.198) Thu Jun 19 09:20:00 PM EDT 2008
I would expect hormone-driven BG's to be higher in the morning too. hmmm... is Jasmine on a pump, lisa?

Registered User Diane Mom of Alex 13, pumping  (68.194.15.62) Thu Jun 19 09:20:06 PM EDT 2008
Thanks, I'm sure I would be a wreck and having him check all the time. Hoping a pump failure never comes up. Rolling Eyes

During the day most within range have added a 'short acting at dinner as advised by out DE still giving extra short acting 2 hourly. during the night - generally by 2 am down to 200 to 216 morning reading72 - 140

Registered User lisa b mother of Yasmine7 diagnosed @ 4 (Australian)  (59.101.58.208) Thu Jun 19 09:21:14 PM EDT 2008
No MDI Lantus - Actrapid - Novorapid

Registered User BettyB Diabetes Educator  (68.106.17.198) Thu Jun 19 09:22:46 PM EDT 2008
Ah.. down with extra insulin -- since the short-ating stays in the bloodstream 3-6 hours, giving it every two hours, it builds up and controls the morning -- what time does she take her Lantus?

Registered User Diane Mom of Alex 13, pumping  (68.194.15.62) Thu Jun 19 09:23:18 PM EDT 2008
What is considered to be a very good A1C for a hormonal, moody, almost 14 year old boy LOL

Lantus morning dose of 14 units our endo seems to think is still working

Registered User Diane Mom of Alex 13, pumping  (68.194.15.62) Thu Jun 19 09:25:39 PM EDT 2008
Wow Lisa, you must get no sleep at night giving shots every 2 hours. Eek

Registered User lisa b mother of Yasmine7 diagnosed @ 4 (Australian)  (59.101.58.208) Thu Jun 19 09:25:43 PM EDT 2008
We used to do a split morning/supper dose about a year ago which I believed we had better control when doing so.

Registered User BettyB Diabetes Educator  (68.106.17.198) Thu Jun 19 09:25:51 PM EDT 2008
LOLOL - for most 14 year olds, whatever you can get - but the recommendation is less than 7.5% between ages 13 and 19 -

Registered User lisa b mother of Yasmine7 diagnosed @ 4 (Australian)  (59.101.58.208) Thu Jun 19 09:26:48 PM EDT 2008
Diane - not for the last 2 weeks at least - very tired and over it - Yas not getting alot of sleep either - very grumpy Rolling Eyes

Registered User Diane Mom of Alex 13, pumping  (68.194.15.62) Thu Jun 19 09:27:18 PM EDT 2008
Oh good! 7.2 four months ago and 7.4 this month. Wink

Registered User BettyB Diabetes Educator  (68.106.17.198) Thu Jun 19 09:27:31 PM EDT 2008
Although Lantus lasts somewhere around 24 hours in most people, it's a good bit shorter in some folks. It's generally not so short, though that you need to split the dose - if the Lantus is popping out during the night, it would explain the whole thing --

Registered User BettyB Diabetes Educator  (68.106.17.198) Thu Jun 19 09:27:49 PM EDT 2008
oops - POOPING out

Registered User BettyB Diabetes Educator  (68.106.17.198) Thu Jun 19 09:29:01 PM EDT 2008
Diane - awesome! As long as he's getting that without a lot of lows, he's doing great

Registered User Diane Mom of Alex 13, pumping  (68.194.15.62) Thu Jun 19 09:29:54 PM EDT 2008
Lisa, the doctor needs to adjust something. You can't go on that way nor can Yas.

I'm with you, lisa - you could try a "mini-fast - no dinner and checking every hour or two to see if it goes up when there is no ood being added - that would show that there wasn't anought background insulin. good luck!

As a person with type 2 diabetes, my advice is to find out as much about your type 2 as you are finding out about Ally's type 1. Doc's don't always give the best or most agressive advice. it's not what you're taking that's important - it's whether or not it's controlling your BG. glad to talk about it off line if you want - my e-mail is betty@diabetestraining.com.

My son is going to go to soccer camp for the first time. Usually when he plays soccer he takes the pump off to prevent lows and that has been working pretty good so far. Now that he will be playing soccer and swimming all day, I know he can't keep the pump off so we will have to lower his daytime basal alot. I'm a little worried about the whole thing. Frown

lots of ways to handle that, Diane - it's going to take some experimenting. Do you know any other pumpers whose kids are into major sports? there are LOTS of them on the site
