BettyB Diabetes Educator  (68.106.17.198) Thu Jul 10 08:59:01 PM EDT 2008
Cute! You need to meet Chuck at FFL - he makes those kindof shocking comments all the time.
Bruce & Rachele Grandparents of Kyle, dx'd at 7  (98.15.218.180) Thu Jul 10 08:59:13 PM EDT 2008
I have a question... are there any guidelines/restrictions for teenages with diabetes and driving, getting learner's permits?
BettyB Diabetes Educator  (68.106.17.198) Thu Jul 10 08:59:37 PM EDT 2008
AW - thans... I've got the books! They look great but I already found typo.. sigh
Bruce & Rachele Grandparents of Kyle, dx'd at 7  (98.15.218.180) Thu Jul 10 08:59:45 PM EDT 2008

Bruce & Rachele Grandparents of Kyle, dx'd at 7  (98.15.218.180) Thu Jul 10 09:00:04 PM EDT 2008
awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww can't believe it. What's the typo?

extra word on page 41 that didn't get erased when editing.. and rest assured there will be more
BettyB Diabetes Educator  (68.106.17.198) Thu Jul 10 09:02:25 PM EDT 2008
Well. we're a mighty (but) small group tonight. What do you want to talk about besides the weather?
Bruce & Rachele Grandparents of Kyle, dx'd at 7  (98.15.218.180) Thu Jul 10 09:02:37 PM EDT 2008
phooey, and I thought we were so eagle-eyed about proofreading. Guess it can't be helped...sorry
Bruce & Rachele Grandparents of Kyle, dx'd at 7  (98.15.218.180) Thu Jul 10 09:03:55 PM EDT 2008
are you aware of any guidelines/restrictions for teenagers with diabetes obtaining a learner's driving permit and/or getting a driver's license?
BettyB Diabetes Educator  (68.106.17.198) Thu Jul 10 09:04:27 PM EDT 2008
It goes with the territory. I've never had a book come out without at least a couple of glitches - even when I've worked with big publishers with professional editors. Not a problem. I'll just fix them in the next printing.
BettyB Diabetes Educator  (68.106.17.198) Thu Jul 10 09:06:20 PM EDT 2008
There may be exceptions in some states or localities I don't know about, but I believe that in most places there aren't any restrictions for persnal drivers' licenses - unless there is an accident due to a low.. then hoops tp jump to get the license back.
Bruce & Rachele Grandparents of Kyle, dx'd at 7  (98.15.218.180) Thu Jul 10 09:06:54 PM EDT 2008
okay thank you.
sapna  (122.163.222.48) Thu Jul 10 09:08:23 PM EDT 2008
hi betty b
BettyB Diabetes Educator  (68.106.17.198) Thu Jul 10 09:08:42 PM EDT 2008
well - hush my mouth - I just went and checked out the ADA site and they have more specific data, including regs in most states
Bruce & Rachele Grandparents of Kyle, dx'd at 7  (98.15.218.180) Thu Jul 10 09:09:06 PM EDT 2008
Hi sapna. Got any questions for tonight's chat? Will you be joining us at FFL Orlando?
BettyB Diabetes Educator  (68.106.17.198) Thu Jul 10 09:09:17 PM EDT 2008
I just put "driver's license diabetes" into Google and the ADA info came up first
Bruce & Rachele Grandparents of Kyle, dx'd at 7  (98.15.218.180) Thu Jul 10 09:09:36 PM EDT 2008
Thank you Betty.... I will definitely search the site for more details. Appreciate that you did that.
BettyB Diabetes Educator  (68.106.17.198) Thu Jul 10 09:09:38 PM EDT 2008
Hi Sapna - glad you're here

i have a ques ?may i ask you
BettyB Diabetes Educator  (68.106.17.198) Thu Jul 10 09:11:17 PM EDT 2008

thankyou
sapna  (122.163.222.48) Thu Jul 10 09:13:01 PM EDT 2008
do milk shoot up the bg?
BettyB Diabetes Educator  (68.106.17.198) Thu Jul 10 09:14:28 PM EDT 2008
Yes, milk can cause bg to rise if there isn't enough insulin to cover the carbohydrate it contains. How much milk does your son usually drink at one time?
BettyB Diabetes Educator  (68.106.17.198) Thu Jul 10 09:14:52 PM EDT 2008
Any grandparents lurking out there?
Bruce & Rachele Grandparents of Kyle, dx'd at 7  (98.15.218.180) Thu Jul 10 09:15:39 PM EDT 2008
Somebody joined... say hi so we can chat. Got any questions tonight?
sapna  (122.163.222.48) Thu Jul 10 09:15:59 PM EDT 2008
250ml
BettyB Diabetes Educator  (68.106.17.198) Thu Jul 10 09:18:26 PM EDT 2008
then if it's cow's milk, it would have about 12 grams of carbohydrate, goat's milk just a bit less. Do you adjust his insulin for what he eats or is on set doses?
sapna  (122.163.222.48) Thu Jul 10 09:18:44 PM EDT 2008
he is on lantus and novarapid but lantus hurts him a lot what should i do that lantus doesnot hurts him?/
BettyB Diabetes Educator  (68.106.17.198) Thu Jul 10 09:19:32 PM EDT 2008
is the lantus cold when you inject it?
sapna  (122.163.222.48) Thu Jul 10 09:20:17 PM EDT 2008
he has a habit of munching in which insulin doesnot works
sapna  (122.163.222.48) Thu Jul 10 09:20:53 PM EDT 2008
yes i kept it in a ref
BettyB Diabetes Educator  (68.106.17.198) Thu Jul 10 09:21:39 PM EDT 2008
MORE people have injection pain with Lantus than with other insulin. Giving it at room temperature may help.
BettyB Diabetes Educator  (68.106.17.198) Thu Jul 10 09:22:26 PM EDT 2008
if you store it in the refr, you can take it out a few minutes before the shot or warm it slightly in your hands to see if that reduces the pain
Bruce & Rachele Grandparents of Kyle, dx'd at 7  (98.15.218.180) Thu Jul 10 09:23:06 PM EDT 2008
Welcome to the others who just joined the chat.
Bruce & Rachele Grandparents of Kyle, dx'd at 7  (98.15.218.180) Thu Jul 10 09:23:34 PM EDT 2008
Any other grandparents out there tonight?
sapna  (122.163.222.48) Thu Jul 10 09:23:36 PM EDT 2008
i have tried this also but this doesnot helps
BettyB Diabetes Educator  (68.106.17.198) Thu Jul 10 09:24:15 PM EDT 2008
kids munch - and most four year olds need to eat between meals - one possibility is to have foods with no carbs around that he can eat between meals without having to be concerned about amounts. Here in the states that would be peanut butter and celery, carrot sticks with ranch dressing - is there something like that he likes to eat?
BettyB Diabetes Educator  (68.106.17.198) Thu Jul 10 09:25:41 PM EDT 2008
As I said, lantus is more likely to cause injection pain than other insilns. Is the pain severe enough that you are considering switching to a different insulin?
sapna  (122.163.222.48) Thu Jul 10 09:25:49 PM EDT 2008
dr told me to put him on a pump but he is not ready for this also
BettyB Diabetes Educator  (68.106.17.198) Thu Jul 10 09:26:18 PM EDT 2008
Anybody out there have questions about what the grandparent sessions will be like in orlando?
BettyB Diabetes Educator  (68.106.17.198) Thu Jul 10 09:27:20 PM EDT 2008
most kids resist pumps at first (adults too) are there folks in the room who have little ones on pump who can speak to sapna
sapna  (122.163.222.48) Thu Jul 10 09:27:46 PM EDT 2008
there are many things here but he is not ready for those things
Chaser Mom to Chase, 2 1/2,dx'd @ 19 months, pumping/CGMS  (68.57.89.83) Thu Jul 10 09:28:42 PM EDT 2008
Hi, I am Loren, mom to Chase. This will be our first FFL. My father and step-mother live in Florida and will be joining us for the conf.
Bruce & Rachele Grandparents of Kyle, dx'd at 7  (98.15.218.180) Thu Jul 10 09:28:58 PM EDT 2008
At one of the sessions at last year's FFL confernce, we learned that newborn babies are put on the pump. Doctor giving the presentation was very pro-pump and could not say enough good things about it.
Bruce & Rachele Grandparents of Kyle, dx'd at 7  (98.15.218.180) Thu Jul 10 09:29:20 PM EDT 2008
Hi Chaser... we look forward to meeting you and your family this year.
Bruce & Rachele Grandparents of Kyle, dx'd at 7  (98.15.218.180) Thu Jul 10 09:29:54 PM EDT 2008
Sorry Loren, I didn't mean to say Chaser
BettyB Diabetes Educator  (68.106.17.198) Thu Jul 10 09:30:12 PM EDT 2008
what kind of things sapna?
Chaser Mom to Chase, 2 1/2,dx'd @ 19 months, pumping/CGMS  (68.57.89.83) Thu Jul 10 09:31:01 PM EDT 2008
No problem with "Chaser". Chase is looking forward to meeting other children with diabetes and pumps.
BettyB Diabetes Educator  (68.106.17.198) Thu Jul 10 09:31:30 PM EDT 2008
Hi Loren - thanks for stopping in. Glad your family will have some folks in the grandparents' track. Do you have any questions about that?
Chaser Mom to Chase, 2 1/2,dx'd @ 19 months, pumping/CGMS  (68.57.89.83) Thu Jul 10 09:32:09 PM EDT 2008
I am hoping his grandparents will get a better idea of what day to day living is with type 1. And will be more willing to have one on one time with him.
Bruce & Rachele Grandparents of Kyle, dx'd at 7  (98.15.218.180) Thu Jul 10 09:32:39 PM EDT 2008
Loren, got any questions regarding the Grandparent sessions? Chase will be meeting ALOT of children. It is so wonderful for the kids to feel 'normal' ...that is most of the kids attending the conference are also diabetic or have a sibling who is.
sapna  (122.163.222.48) Thu Jul 10 09:33:04 PM EDT 2008
there are cerely and kind of an indian stuff
Bruce & Rachele Grandparents of Kyle, dx'd at 7  (98.15.218.180) Thu Jul 10 09:33:31 PM EDT 2008
I can tell you first hand that Betty has some wonderful suggestions to share with Grandparents exactly along those lines. Betty has also written a book that will be available at the conference, specifically written with Grandparents in mind.
sapna  (122.163.222.48) Thu Jul 10 09:34:01 PM EDT 2008
anyways thanks for a chating
BettyB Diabetes Educator  (68.106.17.198) Thu Jul 10 09:34:39 PM EDT 2008
Then I think their being their for the whole experience and attending the grandparent's sessions will be a big help to your family. Very few people understand the realities of living with diabetes unless they are told - and we will do that.
BettyB Diabetes Educator  (68.106.17.198) Thu Jul 10 09:35:28 PM EDT 2008
Thanks sapna - best of luck and thanks for stopping by.
Bruce & Rachele Grandparents of Kyle, dx'd at 7  (98.15.218.180) Thu Jul 10 09:35:52 PM EDT 2008

BettyB Diabetes Educator  (68.106.17.198) Thu Jul 10 09:36:38 PM EDT 2008
Thanks for the nice words, B&R - the book will be used at all the grandparents' sessions. The whole purpose is to help them understand, be more involved
Chaser Mom to Chase, 2 1/2,dx'd @ 19 months, pumping/CGMS  (68.57.89.83) Thu Jul 10 09:37:20 PM EDT 2008

I would love for them to leave not feeling "afraid" of caring for him.
Bruce & Rachele Grandparents of Kyle, dx'd at 7  (98.15.218.180) Thu Jul 10 09:38:27 PM EDT 2008
Loren, be sure to tell your folks to attend the Grandparents Reception at FFL... they will meet loads of folks who feel the very same way and other Grandparents who have overcome their fears and are happy to share their methods of success.
Bruce & Rachele Grandparents of Kyle, dx'd at 7  (98.15.218.180) Thu Jul 10 09:38:55 PM EDT 2008
Sapna, feel free to join other CWD chats where you will find support and help. Our best to you and your son.

I am hoping the following year my husbands parents will join us. They are the ones that are local to us. Chase has already started to realize his cousin spends more time with them.
BettyB Diabetes Educator  (68.106.17.198) Thu Jul 10 09:39:29 PM EDT 2008
The book will be free to all granparents (and other extended family members) who attend the grandparents sessions. And it will also be available to be purchased. I'm mailing them to Florida tomorrow!

BettyB Diabetes Educator  (68.106.17.198) Thu Jul 10 09:41:21 PM EDT 2008
Wow Loren - that's so hard on the kids t notice those differences. I hope what you'll learn this year will help get both sets of grandparents much more involved. I'm sure you could use the help.
Bruce & Rachele Grandparents of Kyle, dx'd at 7  (98.15.218.180) Thu Jul 10 09:42:17 PM EDT 2008
The book Betty is referring to and will be available at the conference is entitled 'Draw Wide the Circle of Love'.
Chaser Mom to Chase, 2 1/2,dx'd @ 19 months, pumping/CGMS  (68.57.89.83) Thu Jul 10 09:42:56 PM EDT 2008
I am hoping. So we will be purchasing another copy of your book to take back to them!
BettyB Diabetes Educator  (68.106.17.198) Thu Jul 10 09:43:32 PM EDT 2008
Want you to see what a difference attending FFL can make. Last year Bruce & Rachele were newbies - ad look at them now! They helped design the grandparents' track and are hosting these chats.
Bruce & Rachele Grandparents of Kyle, dx'd at 7  (98.15.218.180) Thu Jul 10 09:43:59 PM EDT 2008
Last year was our first experience at FFL and Betty's Grandparents' sesssion, and I can't tell you how much we learned and how helpful it was to be a part of those sessions.
Bruce & Rachele Grandparents of Kyle, dx'd at 7  (98.15.218.180) Thu Jul 10 09:44:52 PM EDT 2008
aw shucks Betty.... you inspired us as did the wonderful families including other Grandparents attending last year. CWD FFL is truly a part of the circle of love.
Chaser Mom to Chase, 2 1/2,dx'd @ 19 months, pumping/CGMS  (68.57.89.83) Thu Jul 10 09:47:00 PM EDT 2008
That is wonderful. I am truly looking forward meeting everyone.
BettyB Diabetes Educator  (68.106.17.198) Thu Jul 10 09:47:06 PM EDT 2008
Loren, do you have any specific wishes for what the grandparents can do to be more connected - besides getting over their fear, of course, whch is the most important first step.
BettyB Diabetes Educator  (68.106.17.198) Thu Jul 10 09:48:02 PM EDT 2008
come prepared to laugh a lot and cry a little - you'll do both
Bruce & Rachele Grandparents of Kyle, dx'd at 7  (98.15.218.180) Thu Jul 10 09:49:52 PM EDT 2008
that's for sure
Chaser Mom to Chase, 2 1/2,dx'd @ 19 months, pumping/CGMS  (68.57.89.83) Thu Jul 10 09:50:09 PM EDT 2008
Not to be intimated by the pump
Chaser Mom to Chase, 2 1/2,dx'd @ 19 months, pumping/CGMS  (68.57.89.83) Thu Jul 10 09:50:57 PM EDT 2008
My husband I both thought the pump would have made things easier for them to care for him. Not the case.
BettyB Diabetes Educator  (68.106.17.198) Thu Jul 10 09:51:12 PM EDT 2008
Any of you grnadparents lruking out there, if your grandchild wears a pump, I strongly recommend signing up the wear one yourself during the meeting. It's a great learning experience.
BettyB Diabetes Educator  (68.106.17.198) Thu Jul 10 09:51:37 PM EDT 2008
Well that was cool - do you think you can get them to try wearing a pump Loren?
Bruce & Rachele Grandparents of Kyle, dx'd at 7  (98.15.218.180) Thu Jul 10 09:51:45 PM EDT 2008
My husband even did a site insertion and wore it for a couple of days... this was something Betty offered at one of her sessions.... it really was an excellent experience for him.
Chaser Mom to Chase, 2 1/2,dx'd @ 19 months, pumping/CGMS  (68.57.89.83) Thu Jul 10 09:51:53 PM EDT 2008
Do they need a script to wear one?
Bruce & Rachele Grandparents of Kyle, dx'd at 7  (98.15.218.180) Thu Jul 10 09:52:55 PM EDT 2008
no Bruce didn't
BettyB Diabetes Educator  (68.106.17.198) Thu Jul 10 09:53:07 PM EDT 2008
The pump represents technology to many folks - you know it's easier for certain things.. they're probably afraid to do something wrong. In the sessions and in the book, we'll talk about ways to build that confidence.. but just wearing the pump would be a great first step.
BettyB Diabetes Educator  (68.106.17.198) Thu Jul 10 09:54:28 PM EDT 2008
This year we won't do that in my pump session - but you can sign up to do that - check out the main CWD postings about the orlando conference
Bruce & Rachele Grandparents of Kyle, dx'd at 7  (98.15.218.180) Thu Jul 10 09:54:37 PM EDT 2008
The official close of this chat session is 10 p.m. Are there any other Grandparents or parents out there who would like to ask a question before this chat closes?
BettyB Diabetes Educator  (68.106.17.198) Thu Jul 10 09:55:14 PM EDT 2008
Chances are they would even be able to try the same type of pump that Chase wears
Chaser Mom to Chase, 2 1/2,dx'd @ 19 months, pumping/CGMS  (68.57.89.83) Thu Jul 10 09:56:04 PM EDT 2008
