So - what does everyone have planned for Halloween? Hey Brenda! Are your kids trick-or-treating on Sunday?

We buy the candy off of Zach, so he still gets all the fun but the temptation isn't there.

Registered User Brenda H. mom of Marissa, 17, dx'd 9/89  (216.68.227.252) Tue Oct 26 09:06:55 PM EDT 2004
I think we have Timothy, 10, going out. Not sure what the girls have planned. I was quite the "slacker" this year and didn't order goodies from the Oriental Trading Co. Frown . However, I did buy some plastic fangs and other stuff at a local party store. Just in case I didn't get enough, I also got some small packages of Pepperidge Farm Cheddar Fish and Mini-Pretzels to hand out. Not Atkins friendly, but so many people give out candy and no kid (with or w/o diabetes) needs that much.

Registered User Brenda H. mom of Marissa, 17, dx'd 9/89  (216.68.227.252) Tue Oct 26 09:08:14 PM EDT 2004
Several years ago, the ADA would collect the candy to deliver to a Food Store or homeless, whatever. We kept a small amount from all three kids, then donated the rest. Marissa was usually given a bag of "stuff" in exchange.

Ellen, I usually give out nothing but bouncy balls, pencils, mini bubbles, etc. I have notice that more families are doing this, too.

Registered User Sheri Mom of Zach, 9 dx feb 25, 2003  (206.45.169.28) Tue Oct 26 09:10:00 PM EDT 2004

Pat, it was a loving gesture and believe me, lots of well meaning people buy sugar free candy for children who are diagnosed with diabetes. That was very kind of you.

Registered User Brenda H. mom of Marissa, 17, dx'd 9/89  (216.68.227.252) Tue Oct 26 09:15:55 PM EDT 2004
Pat, these days, most people with diabetes are allowed to eat regular candy (in moderation as it should be with everyone). The sugar free candies often contain alcohol sugars, which, went eaten in excess, cause gas or diarrhea.

Registered User pat grandmother of kristen  (205.188.116.5) Tue Oct 26 09:16:06 PM EDT 2004
beacause of the sugar alcohol in the candy

Registered User Melanie Mom of Amber, 6, dx'd at 3  (209.145.109.2) Tue Oct 26 09:16:26 PM EDT 2004
Does your Amber have D?

Registered User Ellen (FL) Zack 16, dx'd 1989, pump  (152.163.100.135) Tue Oct 26 09:16:33 PM EDT 2004
Sugar free candy can often give kids the "runs". It also is not carbohydrate free. Most doctors today believe that children with diabetes can eat the same foods as everyone else as long as they take insulin for it.

Registered User Laura Billetdeaux CWD Events, Sam's mom, 14W  (66.82.9.31) Tue Oct 26 09:16:37 PM EDT 2004
I remember the first year that Sam went trick-or-treating after dx (he was dx'd in August when he was 8). All the neighbors checked with me ahead of time about candy. I said it was ok, but instead, they all gave him potato chips. Odd choice.

Registered User maryann (MI) mom of Jill, 19  (204.182.232.22) Tue Oct 26 09:17:05 PM EDT 2004
the truth of the matter is, that no child should be allowed to gorge themselves on candy all at once and need to learn how to ration it, whether they have diabetes or not. It always galled me to see any child eat a large packet of candy.

Registered User Brenda H. mom of Marissa, 17, dx'd 9/89  (216.68.227.252) Tue Oct 26 09:17:41 PM EDT 2004
Pat, I'm sure you didn't know about the sugar alcohol. Many people don't. How old is Kristen and when was she diagnosed?

Registered User pat grandmother of kristen  (205.188.116.5) Tue Oct 26 09:17:46 PM EDT 2004
kristen likes potato chips

Registered User Laura B CWD Events, Sam's mom, 14W  (66.82.9.31) Tue Oct 26 09:18:24 PM EDT 2004
There are other things to give out besides candy - something like a granola bar or fruit roll-up can be used in lunches or for lows. Brenda, was it you who gave out pencils one year?

Registered User Debbie mom of megan 12,dxd@4pump  (152.163.100.6) Tue Oct 26 09:18:47 PM EDT 2004
what about sugarless gum?

Registered User maryann (MI) mom of Jill, 19  (204.182.232.22) Tue Oct 26 09:19:18 PM EDT 2004
the neighbors were all concerned for Jill that first yr too, and some bought her a special bag of things. some had sunflower seeds, sugar free candy and small trinkets. It was a wonderful gesture!!!

hey! I am going trick-or-treating with the the Billetdeaux's this year.

Registered User Laura B CWD Events, Sam's mom, 14W  (66.82.9.31) Tue Oct 26 09:20:42 PM EDT 2004
Sugarless gum is a great idea! Also, if you're not in a huge neighborhood (because it can get expensive), bags of popcorn are good as well. Our town doctor has a caramel apple-making station at his house. Pick your apple, dunk it in the caramel, roll it in nuts, and wrap it up! I'd walk BLOCKS for that!

Registered User Ellen (FL) Zack 16, dx'd 1989, pump  (152.163.100.135) Tue Oct 26 09:21:50 PM EDT 2004
The first time Zack went trick-or-treating on the pump, he went very low from all the running around in the heat (it's still HOT here at night). He would only eat chocolate and refused to eat the simple sugar to bring up his bg. We had to have him driven home...he couldn't walk...He was a kid with a 10 pound bag of candy and went low! So think about reducing insulin if your child will be out running hard and for a long time trick-or-treating.

Registered User Melanie Mom of Amber, 6, dx'd at 3  (209.145.109.2) Tue Oct 26 09:22:15 PM EDT 2004
My next door neighbor has a can of diet pop for when Amber comes knocking. I appreciate the gesture.

Registered User Brenda H. mom of Marissa, 17, dx'd 9/89  (216.68.227.252) Tue Oct 26 09:22:27 PM EDT 2004
Pat, I always make a regular cake with regular frosting. Usually, esp. at Kristen's age, the kids are running around so much that the extra sugar helps them from having low blood sugars. Some people use Cool Whip as the frosting as it is lower in sugar/carbohydrates.

Registered User maryann (MI) mom of Jill, 19  (204.182.232.22) Tue Oct 26 09:22:41 PM EDT 2004
potato chips, pretzels,& granola bars have carbs too. And don't seem like an exciting thing to get.

I throw away homemade treats unless I know the family personally. I feel bad doing it because in most cases I am sure that there is nothing wrong with it, but I'm just not willing to take the chance.

It's a shame becuase some of the olser people make caramel popcorn balls. My favorite.

it really annoys me that sugar free cookies are so expensive, have a bunch of carbs and TINY little bitty servings!! waste of money for an inferior taste but we did try those way back at first too.

Registered User Billetdeaux CWD Events  (66.82.9.31) Tue Oct 26 09:26:01 PM EDT 2004
Well, heck, it's the town doctor's house....
And you're right. We all know everyone here in town. If it was a homemade treat from someone I didn't know, I'd pitch it.

I use some sugar substitutes too, they are helpful, but nothing totally sugar free has the same consistency and texture. I like to add some fiber, and less sugar to homemade things. Anything that gets away from heavy frosting helps a lot too. like the cool whip suggestion

Melanie, I have made cheesecake using Splenda. I prefer to use sugar, but this cheesecake was for my neighbor who wanted reduced carbs. She said it was great.

When oyu bake with Splenda it needs to be kept in the fridge otherwise the baking is only good for 2-3 days. At least the cookbook I have from Lifescan says that.

You know, I think that what we parents (talking to you oldtimers, like Ellen) did for Halloween 10 years ago is not the same as today. We didn't count carbs and didn't allow much candy at all. Now, we just work it into our children's diets. Just doesn't seem, to me, like Handling Halloween 2004 is the big deal it was in 1994. What do you think, Ellen?

Brenda. I'm looking at the cookbook and it does sa that it doesn't have the preservative qualities that sugar does and so baking done with Spenda should br refrigerated or frozen. It has other tips for cooking with it too like mixing it with the flour not creaming it with the butter...

Kelli, I don't know what Marissa has done the last few years. I would either bolus less (ex. if your child takes 1 unit for 20g, have her bolus 1 unit for 30 or 40g) or bolus the usual amount for every other piece of candy with 12g or more. So, bolus for a 17g candy bar, nothing for a 15g piece of candy, bolus for the next. Does this make sense to anyone? Make sure you check her BG every hour, if not more often. Just depends on the amount of walking.

Kelli, a lot will depend on what her BG is before dinner, what you try to feed her, what she eats, her level of anticipation, etc. She may be so excited, she hardly eats. And, if you reduce her basals starting two hours before dinner, you should be ok with "almost" normal dinner insulin. Wouldn't hurt to give a little less, but if she's a little high, let her stay a little high (bolus normal, no correction). Lots of options and there are no guarantees, of course.

I need to head off, too. Time for a few chores before bed. I think this room will be open until 11 EDT (reminds me that most of us need to change our clocks this weekend--don't forget). BYE

Good to know I'm not the only one who ransacks the kitchen for the halloween candy, before I give it out. Especially the CHOCOLATE.

She is going to be half angel half devil. Very cute. How about your daughter?

Registered User Kelli Mom to Kate, 7, dx at 5  (199.126.27.3) Tue Oct 26 10:22:21 PM EDT 2004
Kate will be a new Canadian cartoon character called "Atomic Betty" - red hair, super hero girl - save the world, lots of pink - you get the picture. Anyway, her pump color is "atomic purple" so she also called her pump Atomic Betty.

Registered User Shelly Mom to Bridget, 7 dx'd in April  (24.107.147.253) Tue Oct 26 10:24:38 PM EDT 2004
How funny.  LOL  I never heard of it, but I am sure my dd has.

I see your dd's dx date, Shelly. How are you guys doing.

Registered User Shelly Mom to Bridget, 7 dx'd in April  (24.107.147.253) Tue Oct 26 10:28:32 PM EDT 2004
Good. This has been a rough week. I think her honeymoon period is starting to end. She was normally between 70 - 150 and lately we have been 200 - 400. They increased her insulin today. Her last a1c a month ago was 5.9. I am sure it will be a lot different at our next apt. How long did Kate's honeymoon last?

Registered User Kelli Mom to Kate, 7, dx at 5  (199.126.27.3) Tue Oct 26 10:30:01 PM EDT 2004
She didn't have much of one. Her insulin needs just continued to grow. She never had a period of reduced needs as some report. That's an awesome a1c. We've never seen that.

Registered User Shelly Mom to Bridget, 7 dx'd in April  (24.107.147.253) Tue Oct 26 10:30:48 PM EDT 2004
The dr. told me not to expect it again. I think her pancreas helped a lot.  Smile

Is Kate on Lantus or a pump?

Registered User Kelli Mom to Kate, 7, dx at 5  (199.126.27.3) Tue Oct 26 10:32:17 PM EDT 2004
I understand the honeymoon to be a good thing for the body. Lantus is not readily avail in Canada. We were on Novolog and NPH but are not on a pump since August.

Registered User Kelli Mom to Kate, 7, dx at 5  (199.126.27.3) Tue Oct 26 10:32:36 PM EDT 2004
Sorry, that should be we are NOW on pump since August.

Registered User Shelly Mom to Bridget, 7 dx'd in April  (24.107.147.253) Tue Oct 26 10:33:42 PM EDT 2004
With her honeymoon ending soon she will be able to take her pump classes in Dec. She is on Lantus and Novolog. I am surprised that Canada is not where we are.

Registered User Kelli Mom to Kate, 7, dx at 5  (199.126.27.3) Tue Oct 26 10:35:59 PM EDT 2004
Good luck with the pump. I am sure you will do well - it is awesome. Yup, I can't recall what the hold up is with Lantus - it is actually approved but there is some dumb glitch no doubt relating to money, that prevents it from being easily available. You CAN get it if you get a special script but no guarantee it has been refrig properly and insurance doesn't cover it. So, we wait.  Frown  Anyway, Shelly and everyone, I have to say goodnight now. Thanks for the great chat. Best of luck to everyone.

Sometimes you have to shop endos to find a team your comfortable with. Did they give you any books to read?

Registered User Jessica Korbin, 2, dxd 19mo, now on pump  (24.10.179.65) Tue Oct 26 11:18:14 PM EDT 2004
Hey chef. when our son was diagnosed it felt as if he was some kind of science experiment. None of the on call doctors wanted to take him because he was so young.

Registered User Sherry   (4.143.157.78) Tue Oct 26 11:18:51 PM EDT 2004
Chef, before you know it YOU will be telling your endo what insulin changes Em needs!

my kitchen table has become home base to a library of stuff, but my day is packed with trying to get stable, get the stuff for the school nurse buy the food, how can i possibly have time to read?
we just got home friday.

I agree with Sherry. We rarely call our team, because every case is different. You'll soon become a diabetes expert. I feel I am now, and he's only had it for 8 months.

Registered User Missy (AR) Mom of 4, 2 Type 1  (208.54.220.24) Tue Oct 26 11:20:42 PM EDT 2004
You can go to the Barbara Davis Center for Childhood Diabetes and read their on line book. I think the most important chapter at first is the one on greiving.

Registered User Missy (AR) Mom of 4, 2 Type 1  (208.54.220.24) Tue Oct 26 11:21:53 PM EDT 2004
You do become an expert, Lindsey has never been hospitalized because of her diabetes.

hi

Registered User Sherry   (4.143.157.78) Tue Oct 26 11:22:49 PM EDT 2004
You cannot expect to have time to grieve, learn how to care for Em and read everything that is available. It is all so overwhelming at first...but believe me, in time it will become part of your daily life.

Hello, Sandra and Cathy

Jared has not been in the hopital since diagnosis 7 years ago. I rarely call the endo with problems...It is just 2nd nature to figure it out ourselves at this point. I remember like it was yesterday, the stress when he was first diagnosed.

Registered User Sandra, Colleen 8 dxd@3   (151.203.117.237) Tue Oct 26 11:24:27 PM EDT 2004

I wish there had been places like this when Lindsey was dxd. It helps just to replay everything to someone who has been through it.

Registered User Sandra, Colleen 8 dxd@3   (151.203.117.237) Tue Oct 26 11:25:50 PM EDT 2004

what room are we moving to?

Registered User Sherry   (4.143.157.78) Tue Oct 26 11:26:45 PM EDT 2004
I didn't know about this chat room or if it even existed when Jared was diagnosed. We drove an hour and a half to meet another child with diabetes. I am moving to the Parents room.

Registered User Jessica Korbin, 2, dxd 19mo, now on pump  (24.10.179.65) Tue Oct 26 11:26:46 PM EDT 2004
The parents room is always a good one.
