I have done some very short rides with my son's bike. It's relatively new and is just my size.
Billetdeaux CWD Events, Sam's mom, 17, pumper  (69.212.49.40) Wed Apr 18 09:03:08 PM EDT 2007
Neal (my husband) just started riding again a couple of weeks ago. The bike has been 'in storage' for several years. I'm hoping he'll hook up with you, Phil, for some pointers.
Phil Southerland- Team Type 1 Dx'd at 7 months  (70.223.19.170) Wed Apr 18 09:04:33 PM EDT 2007
Hey Daniel,
Next week, Team Type 1 will field 6 riders (all type 1) into the Tour of Virginia, www.tourofvirginia.com
So the chat could be about what it takes to do that, begin riding, or anything at all
Brenda H. mom of Marissa, 19, dx'd 9/89 (future nurse)  (216.68.227.252) Wed Apr 18 09:04:37 PM EDT 2007
I read an aritice about Peter Hoogenboom who rode all around the U.S. as the winner of the Bayer Asencia Dream Fund Tour. His goal was 10,000 miles around the 48 contiguous states. Awesome, but a few too many miles for most of us!
Phil Southerland- Team Type 1 Dx'd at 7 months  (70.223.19.170) Wed Apr 18 09:05:13 PM EDT 2007
Laura, please send him my way. Great to hear that he is riding
Daniel/FL Pumper/sensor  (71.101.144.72) Wed Apr 18 09:06:04 PM EDT 2007
Thanks Phil, How long is the ride? It has been years since I have ridden but I play tennis 3 to 4 time s a week and would love to get back into it.
RatLuver 16 dxd @ 11 minimed pumper  (72.201.172.181) Wed Apr 18 09:06:11 PM EDT 2007

Phil Southerland- Team Type 1 Dx'd at 7 months  (70.223.19.170) Wed Apr 18 09:06:15 PM EDT 2007
Brenda, great that it fits. How have they been? Peter is a very nice guy. I hope he achieves the goal!

Daniel, it is appx 500 miles in 6 days. It is a pro/am race, and the first time an all type 1 team has entered one of those.
Daniel/FL Pumper/sensor  (71.101.144.72) Wed Apr 18 09:07:24 PM EDT 2007

Ok I see there are three consecutive days of 100 miles plus, that is a bit of a challenge,
Brenda H. mom of Marissa, 19, dx'd 9/89 (future nurse)  (216.68.227.252) Wed Apr 18 09:08:12 PM EDT 2007
I don't know Peter personally. The article doesn't really say if he actually made it to all 48 states. Says he kept a blog www.thedreamtour.org
Phil Southerland- Team Type 1 Dx'd at 7 months  (70.223.19.170) Wed Apr 18 09:08:23 PM EDT 2007
Hey RatLuvr, great question. If it drops I notice a loss of power, and it usually will begin to drop 20-30 minutes in. So I try to eat a lot, especially in the early stages

Hello Judith
Phil Southerland- Team Type 1 Dx'd at 7 months  (70.223.19.170) Wed Apr 18 09:10:36 PM EDT 2007
Cycling definitely helps. When training, I use much less insulin, and bs's are more stable.
joanna626 Phil's mom  (69.244.222.235) Wed Apr 18 09:10:36 PM EDT 2007
Oh, Phil loved homework more than his bike![]()
Daniel/FL Pumper/sensor  (71.101.144.72) Wed Apr 18 09:10:39 PM EDT 2007
Rat, I can tell you that regular exercise is the best thing to help your "d" and your physical life.
joanna626 Phil's mom  (69.244.222.235) Wed Apr 18 09:11:08 PM EDT 2007
I tried to use the bike as leverage - I think it worked - once.
Billetdeaux Moderator, Sam's mom, 17, pumper  (69.212.49.40) Wed Apr 18 09:11:14 PM EDT 2007
That's funny, Phil. Your mom checks out your chat.Chats are officially an hour, but sometimes the conversation goes a bit longer.
Judith David, 21, diagnosed at age 8 weeks  (64.184.81.154) Wed Apr 18 09:11:17 PM EDT 2007
Phil, I see you were diagnosed as a young infant. Do you know about the testing for genetic mutations in neonatal diabetes? Some are able to use sulfonylurea drugs come off insulin - even decades after diagnosis.
Phil Southerland- Team Type 1 Dx'd at 7 months  (70.223.19.170) Wed Apr 18 09:11:19 PM EDT 2007

My son's endo led teen bike trips (600-800 miles in about 10 days) for 20 years.
Cyclist, over the top of life's hill type 1, UK  (217.44.220.32) Wed Apr 18 09:13:20 PM EDT 2007
So Phil have you got any plans to prevent being hit with a delayed onset hypo, particularly with 3 days, one after another of 100 miles plus, something I haven't done
Brenda H. mom of Marissa, 19, dx'd 9/89 (future nurse)  (216.68.227.252) Wed Apr 18 09:13:44 PM EDT 2007
Jeff and I went on a nearby trail about 3 weeks ago and I hadn't ridden on dirt in about 30 years. It was quite embarassing as I kind of tumbled off the bike going up a very short "hill."Haven't ridden much since as it got very cold/windy/rainy.
Phil Southerland- Team Type 1 Dx'd at 7 months  (70.223.19.170) Wed Apr 18 09:13:47 PM EDT 2007
Hi Judith. Not quite as young as you. I have read about the testing, and I do not qualify. Wouldn't want to give up diabetes anyway:)
Phil Southerland- Team Type 1 Dx'd at 7 months  (70.223.19.170) Wed Apr 18 09:14:32 PM EDT 2007
Brenda, we all take tumbles from time to time. My mom can vouch for the road rash I was decorated with as a junior
RatLuver 16 dxd @ 11 minimed pumper  (72.201.172.181) Wed Apr 18 09:14:41 PM EDT 2007
I just ride to the pharmacy to get my strips.. That'a exercise it's a 2 mile ride. (pathetic)
Judith David, 21, diagnosed at age 8 weeks  (64.184.81.154) Wed Apr 18 09:15:02 PM EDT 2007
Oh, you'd still have diabetes...but it would be easier to manage. Some are testing anyone dx'd under the age of 5. If you haven't contacted Dr. Louis Philipson at U of Chicago, please do.....
Brenda H. mom of Marissa, 19, dx'd 9/89 (future nurse)  (216.68.227.252) Wed Apr 18 09:15:09 PM EDT 2007
Hmm, I bet we could ride to Laura's house from ours--four hours by car, so maybe 10 by bike???
Phil Southerland- Team Type 1 Dx'd at 7 months  (70.223.19.170) Wed Apr 18 09:15:16 PM EDT 2007
Cyclist: Yes, we will be checking BS's 2-3 times a night, and making sure that we are properly fueled at all times.
Judith David, 21, diagnosed at age 8 weeks  (64.184.81.154) Wed Apr 18 09:15:34 PM EDT 2007
Testing is VERY easy: spit into a cup! Free, postage paid! What a deal!
Phil Southerland- Team Type 1 Dx'd at 7 months  (70.223.19.170) Wed Apr 18 09:15:43 PM EDT 2007
As you know a hypo the morning of a 100 mile stage is not a good way to start.
Cyclist, over the top of life's hill type 1, UK  (217.44.220.32) Wed Apr 18 09:16:03 PM EDT 2007
How far Brenda?

Judith David, 21, diagnosed at age 8 weeks  (64.184.81.154) Wed Apr 18 09:17:14 PM EDT 2007
I'm just trying to spread the word. I know the grandfather of the first one Philipson took off insulin.
Phil Southerland- Team Type 1 Dx'd at 7 months  (70.223.19.170) Wed Apr 18 09:17:18 PM EDT 2007
RatLuvr: 2 miles is a great start. Can build from there. A little farther each time.

Phil Southerland- Team Type 1 Dx'd at 7 months  (70.223.19.170) Wed Apr 18 09:18:45 PM EDT 2007

Brenda H. mom of Marissa, 19, dx'd 9/89 (future nurse)  (216.68.227.252) Wed Apr 18 10:02:40 PM EDT 2007
Cyclist, I am a walker, not a bike rider. Not that I have anything against bikes. I just prefer to walk. On a good week (nice weather, no appointments or whatever), I will try to walk 20-30 miles. I could cover the same distance in much less time on a bike, but I just don't feel like it's the same amount of exrcise. For me, I think I'd need to ride 10 miles to feel the same amount of exercise. However, I will try to rider occasionally so I can use slightly different muscles.
Brenda H. mom of Marissa, 19, dx'd 9/89 (future nurse)  (216.68.227.252) Wed Apr 18 10:03:29 PM EDT 2007
