Chat with Clare Rosenfeld About CWD's International Diabetes Youth Ambassador Section

photo About Clare Rosenfeld
Clare Rosenfeld, now 16 years old, is CWD's International Diabetes Youth Ambassador and the Former National Youth Advocate for the American Diabetes Association (2000-01). She lives in Oregon with her parents and sister. Since her diagnosis with Type 1 diabetes at age seven, Clare has given countless speeches, organized and participated in hundreds of American Diabetes Association events and fundraisers, and raised tens of thousands of dollars for diabetes cure research. Clare also helps fight discrimination; at age 12 she became the youngest certified SCUBA diver with diabetes.

Clare traveled (80,000 miles) to diabetes camps throughout the country during her year as ADA's Youth Advocate, inspiring over 1,800 kids to get involved. Although science is Clare's favorite subject, she's interested in politics as well. She has met with many elected officials, lobbied congress for increased diabetes research funding, testified before the Food & Drug Administration, and developed a grass roots effort to successfully pass insurance reform in Oregon to assure people with diabetes would have needed diabetes supplies and education.

"Young people have a tremendous amount of power", says Clare. "I believe that one person can make a difference and together we can change the world. My hope is that all young people with diabetes work together, because together we will find a cure for diabetes!"

There are many organizations you can contact to volunteer or to raise awareness about diabetes.

Just in case you are new to the IDYA and didn't get my email, some initial thoughts are: We could raise awareness in our schools and communities. Give talks, write letters, write letters to get on major TV shows. How about even contacting your local governments and asking them to proclaim a Diabetes Day in YOUR community?

I'm getting her ready for the IDYA, but she dosen't think she wants to be a teen yet or something like that. There was a mayor there and alot of higher ups of the city.

Another Sam idea (he's using my computer so we don't tie up 3 phone lines in the house): Find out what sporting events are being held at your school on November 14. You can then do a number of things: have the refreshment proceeds for that day benefit a diabetes organization such as CWD Foundation, JDRF, DRI, or ADA. Have information available at the refreshment area re: the signs and symptoms of diabetes. Have info available about the incidence of diabetes in your geographic area (so people see the high prevalence of it). Ask the announcer to announce at the beginning and half time that this is international diabetes day and the school is honoring it by supporting (whatever) foundation that day. You get the idea.

I'm mulling over your comment about getting info to the walks. We have to be careful because IDYA is a CWD function, and the walks are a JDRF function. They frequently ask us for our flyers to distribute at the walks, but we don't get pushy and send information. We wait until we're asked. If would be ok, I think, for any teens who are walking in their regional walks to ASK the JDRF organizing chapter if it's ok to put out information about IDYA. And if so, then we need to print a flyer. That would go through me (having the flyer printed) - and requests could be processed through you (Clare).

Clare - my email address is CamelsRFun@aol.com - now you know who I am. Have you considered putting out an email to the doctors of the International Society for Pediatric and Adolescent Diabetes (ISPAD).

Clare, you may have met Zack at the last two CWD conferences...not sure.

Please tell him we have a great group of guys from CA that I met recently at the Padre Foundation who have joined. He could email me and I'll help work on him!

Ellen (FL) (Zack's Mom) from 64.12.96.107
At www.ispad.org you can find lists of email addresses of pediatric endocrinologist around the world...may want to contact them and give them something to print out and give to their patients.

We could also do something like the mastercard commercials... like "one box of lancets $___, one bottle of insulin $___, one insulin pump $___. One IDYA with hopes for a future PRICELESS"

Clare Rosenfeld (IDYA Age 16) from 67.250.136.176
Thank you Ellen! That is a great idea. We tried to have this chat at a time that would work internationally, but I haven't seen any of our international IDYA's yet.

Sat Sep 7 2002 16:01:30 Eastern US
Ellen (FL) (Zack's Mom) from 64.12.96.107

There's also a pediatric endocrinologist listserve...if your ped endo posts, perhaps he/she would be willing to give it a plug to the other doctors...it's also international although more often U.S. doctors.

Clare, do you know if what you are doing would count towards high school community service credit hours? Z will need that in a couple of years and that would certainly be an incentive to get him involved.

They are both very active with kids, obviously, and I'm sure would support any initiative. We just need to get the info in their hands.
