So - I guess I should minimally introduce the chat. Basically, it's a free for all - any topic, any question, any suggestion - relating to one of the conferences is fine to bring up. Otherwise, I'll just throw out topics and ask questions and similarly talk to myself...
As a starter... the conferences for 2005 just finished up, with the San Diego Focus on Pumping conference. It was one of my favorites to date. Very excellent group of adults and kids (and presenters and sponsors). If you attended, your feedback would be helpful.
Re: next summer's Conf., are there more restaurants in the hotel for lunches and stuff? Or, is CWD providing all lunches this time?

CWD always provides lunches for the conference days (Thurs, Fri). The Renaissance Orlando Resort doesn't have a ton of restaurants. What we are working on with them are sandwich kiosks (with sandwiches, salads, etc.) that will be in the hotel common areas, out by the pool, etc. There are also a lot of restaurants nearby. It's right by International Drive if you remember that area... all the fast food places, plus some sit-down restaurants. You'd need a vehicle.
Can I just ask you experts a non conference rekated ???. Jesse is untethering and forgot his lantus at 6:30ish.Is it ok to give it now, or just use old pump basals???

I'd love to do a conference in St. Louis. We work pretty exclusively with Marriott properties, and I've sent requests for proposals to St Louis and they've opted not to bid on our conference. Not sure why. I'll continue to try, though! Right now we are booking conference for the end of 2007 and into 2008!
What is the Isla de Mujeres...in cancun?
Other food and restaurants sound good. Are some in walking distance?

Julia - I wouldn't walk it with the kids. I'd hop on a shuttle (I'm going to see if we can arrange one or two for Weds during the day) or hop in someone else's van!
What are the summer dates? I need to give them to my boss for the time off....

The Isla Mujeres is in Cancun. It's a wonderful island where you can spend the day snorkeling, swimming, sailing, biking, hiking... pretty much any kind of sport you can think of having to do with water, they do. As part of the Cancun conference, we'll be pulling together a group to go over to the island on Saturday. The conference sessions are Thurs/Fri. Play on Saturday. Go home Sunday. I'm there. Actually, Natalie and I did this during our site visit, and it was very reasonable and very fun.

Do they have SCUBA diving there?
Summer dates: July 19-23. Plan to come at least on the 18th. Focus groups all day on the 19th. Volunteer gathering Tuesday night (the 18th), plus, by request, we'll have a pool night for families on site. The pool restaurant serves fabulous burgers and sandwiches... yum. Let's go now.

Heidyn - If you come Weds through Sunday, you won't need to drive anywhere. Everything is right on site. And Saturday's day at Sea World is just across the parking lot. As part of the conference, we serve so much food that you barely stop eating...
Heidyn needs a year off to recuperate from Disney...LOL

They do have scuba in Cancun. Neal was debating whether to bring his stuff, but he decided not to. I think we'll visit some of the Mayan ruins the day before conference, and then visit Isla Mujeres the day after. Then go home. Penniless.

no....I am in portland...I am going back to MD for the summer to work and then I am moving to Saginaw....
Stacey - The Philadelphia conference is Focus on Pumping. Some great speakers. Dr. Henry Anhalt will join us (he'll discuss Why We Pump and The Future of Pumping). Also, Gary Scheiner will return as faculty (Strike the Spike, and Preventing Hypos). Rick Philbin will present about Exercise and Busy Kids. Natalie will compare all the new infusion sets on the market. Etc. Lots of new stuff.

Stacey, let's talk. I would love for Jesse to be on the Teen Pump Panel. Sam is on it, Trevor, Monica Lanning. Marissa was on it in San Diego, but she may not be able to come to Philly - college comes first.
Maybe that is why I continue to lose weight...I can't/don't cook....
I may be in the minority, but I loved Dr. Clare-Salazar from the first conference. I wonder if now that people have been to many, they would like more science in addition to the day to day management skills

The summer conference will have more science. We've invited quite a few new people. Lots of new topics to hear about. I can't give out names until I have confirmations from the new folks, but I did hear back from Dr. Ragnar Hanas from Sweden, and he will be with us in Orlando. He is absolutely wonderful.
Will there be a sports central this summer?

Ragnar Hanas is a love and he has written an awesome book on Type 1 if you need a great book.
We are also working in more discussion groups for the kids. They do need a bit more structure than last year. Lots of social time, of course, but definitely some structured discussion time. AND the scavenger hunt for all kids!

Yah. Now that we are coming up on the 6th summer conference, we have to ask: What topics can we have - and who can we invite to speak - that will be interesting to someone who has come to all six conferences? So, I think from this point you'll start to see some new faces, in addition to our tried and true wonderful speakers like Richard Rubin, John Walsh, etc.

I'm viewing the DVD of the proceedings before the FDA Advisory Committee on the inhaled insulin....I'd love to have a speaker who speaks AGAINST it and tells the dangers of it long term.

Yes, a sports central, but smaller (a third the size). Also, outdoor tennis courts, a sand volleyball court, and outdoor basketball. I realize it's dreadfully hot during the day outdoors, so I wouldn't expect these things to be used at those times. Perhaps in the evening or morning, though.

Scavenger Hunt will probably be contained in the Exhibit Hall, but not limited to sponsors. More like what you all did for the regionals. Lots of fun questions and tidbits of information. With 200 kids in each age group, we really need to keep it confined to the exhibit hall.

I'd like to hear Steve Edelman
One thing that Dr. Wendy Satin Rapaport has done in group coping skills diabetes meetings, has been ROLE PLAYING where the kid plays the parent and the parent plays the kid. Some interactive sessions like that may be helpful.

Teen dance will be on Friday night this summer. Probably a dinner-dance event. This will be after the all-day offsite (likely to Islands of Adventure) on Friday. The teens will have to participate all day Thursday in order to join the off-site on Friday.

Ellen, do you remember Joe Solowiejczyk from this summer's conference? He is excellent with teens, role-playing, parents who are having difficulty with their kids and with diabetes management. He's going to do something along these lines. Also Bob Bulgarelli will be doing workshops all day long, both days. He's working on topics/format now.

Yes, we will be breaking down the kids groups into much smaller, more manageable groups. Think in terms of working groups of 10 or so for teens. A bit smaller for the younger kids. We will need LOTS of volunteers.
The call for volunteers this year will be for half-days, not single events. It's too hard to keep track of volunteers who come and go as quickly as the kids do between sessions. We need more stability.

Stacey - The kids took a vote, and Islands of Adventure won. There are some water rides - the kids can get soaked if they want to. Also, I am meeting with the manager of the park and we will work out a pass system so the kids don't wait in long hot lines. Otherwise, we won't do it.

Would love to have way more with the young adults... especially now that our teens are young adults! Marissa, Carolyn, Meghan. When will Zack be 18? I am looking for some young adult leaders! Many of the adult sessions will be interesting for the young adults - and very appropriate - however there may be some discussion time or social activities that the young adults want to do that I need to get on radar. Any young adult volunteers out there? Meghan, put your hand down. I need you on kids.

Ellen - Back to your question about inhaled insulin... we actually are covering that in the Cancun conference. Dr. Kim Kelly is presenting about new insulins and insulin delivery systems. He is about as objective as they come (and a wonderful speaker).
Wendy- I wont drive to florida... anyway, with the price of gas- its probably cheaper to fly!!!

Joe Solo... was great w/ all the different age groups. I found him to be a very good listener and eager to integrate in our large CWD family.

I am gonna keep my eye on Southwest for flights out of Islip..usually very reasonable..
I'd like to see the young adults be 18-25 or so. College age. Or 'just out of high school or college age.' Close enough in age to share a lot of the same social and work challenges.

Oh, also, we'll be having the sibling discussion groups by age group this year - elementary, tweener, and teen. I know those were very obviously missing last summer. Lots of people (lots of kids) asked for them back. They'll be there.

Julia. Jo Solo is the guy who was running around w/ the different kids groups and he would also ofteb check in up front w/ us. I think he said he was of Israeli descent. Very nice... I just read a nice write up about him in our Animas newsletter.

How would you all feel about Karaoke on Thursday night after the 'banquet proper?' The teens will have an open gym from 9-11. I need to find something fun to do for the rest of us. Can either do something with a DJ a la last year at Disney, or could do a karaoke and then dancing evening. We want to end a little earlier (say, around 11). With a midnight ending, it's really late when people get back to their rooms and to bed, and then everyone is dragging the next morning. We want the kids fresh. The adults can drink coffee.
Hi Connie - Just chime in when something about the conference chat interests you and you have a question! Those are basically the only ground rules. Other topics have to go to other chat rooms!
Maybe for Meghan's sake there could be a speaker on driving safety with diabetes. Now Heidyn, I'm certain you don't change your site while driving.

I think the younger teens would like the karasoke too. Last summerr, they liked the DJ better than the teen dance, I think that at 13-14, they were a bit intimidated by the older kids and the bumping/grinding that was going on...lol..
The ballroom dancing lesson was a nice touch last year

Ballroom dancing will be back. Double session on Friday afternoon. We're going to use the teen space since they have a built-in dance floor in their meeting room and they will be offsite on Friday! Michael Kendrick offered to come back and REALLY teach us how to dance! Who's in?

Any age would be welcome at the karaoke. The teen social activities are a challenge. We have the 15-17 year old kids, and yes, they definitely bump and grind. And date. And smooch. This is one of the reasons we had a definite lower limit of 13 for the teens (insurance was another reason). However, some 13 year old kids, and some 14 year olds, are not ready for this. And some most definitely are.

Yep, Will Cross was great. So was Michael Hunter. And Jay Hewitt. The sponsoring companies try to mix it up a bit - so I'm not sure who will be with us this summer. If we keep repeating the same people, it gets old. Besides, the companies re-do contracts each year with the celebrities who represent their products, and that determines somewhat the pool of people they can bring to our conferences.

O.k. I'm back. I would vote for Square Dancing. It's a very sociable way to have fun and almost anyone can follow the D.J./square dance leader.
Pool party is Tuesday night. There is a huge pool deck, an equally large grassy area (where we'll be giving out volunteer shirts and assignments)... and a great pool bar and grill.
