We hold 4 conferences each year. The next one is in Philadelphia in March. We were supposed to have one in Cancun in January - a vacation conference - but the resort was badly damaged in Wilma.
I'm hanging out for the chat, too. Going to go make a cup of tea in my new microwave!

I just saw Chris Dudley's ad at the top of this page (the Accu-chek ad)... he's newly-involved with our conferences. Roche is sponsoring him for the Friends for Life conference in July. He's going to spend lots of time with all the kids.

I think he'll be wonderful at the conference. We've wanted to have him involved for a few years, but he's always had conflicts with other things; it just never worked. This year, it WILL! Also, we'll have Jay Leeuwenburg with us (pro football player).

Do you always use the same cities for regional confs?
Trish, I try to schedule conferences over the weekend and over the summer (i.e., the Friends for Life conference is always a Wednesday to Sunday in July, and it's always in Orlando). The 'vacation event' - which is usually a cruise or a resort like Cancun - generally involved a couple of school days. These aren't meant for everyone. We try to offer different types of things so people can pick what works best for them.
Laura, have I told you lately that Jesse is soooo excited about the conference...
The regionals are all different places. If you go to the link I sent and check it out, you'll see many different cities.
Stacey, I'm so glad that Jesse is willing to be involved! He'll be great on the panel, and I know he will be one of the teen leaders.
The problem last year with FFL was that it conflicted with D-camp. I can't win this year, but we'll keep trying.

Trish, you just need to do what works for your family. We post the dates for conferences two years in advance (we just added an Oct 2007 Minneapolis conference today!) - so you have lots of time to plan. For some people, the finances, travel, school, etc. just don't work out. That's ok. There are camps and other wonderful diabetes education and social activities.

I might have to see if Kathryn can fly to Philly and back on her own so she doesn't miss too much school. Jeff always goes a day early and stays thru Monday (needs to get that What's New done on Sunday!).
Yes, DO book the room as soon as you know you are attending. We only have 60 rooms in the contract, and a third of them are taken already. And the conference is still 4 months away.
i will do that on Monday..have to wait for mom to get back from her shopping trip..
Brenda, I think Neal and Sam are flying out Friday. I'll fly in on Thursday and home on Monday. Monday is Sam's birthday... that's why I really wanted Kathryn, Megan, and all Sam's buddies to be there. It's his Sweet 16.

Yes. Carolyn actually has spring break during that time (it ends that weekend). She may come along, too, just to say hi, and then take the train back up to NYU.

Ellen, we're finally fixing up our kitchen (countertops been peeling for several years). New double oven sitting in the garage; new cooktop and microwave done today. Mess everywhere. Keeping old cabinets, fridge and dishwasher--WE didn't win that $340 million.

What are you talking about? It snows a TON in March. In fact, it snows more on the east coast than it does in Michigan in March! You can let Carolyn drive...

October's not safe in Florida.
We've structured our sponsorships a little differently this year, and BD has stepped forward to be the major sponsor of the regional conferences... in a very big way. Because of this, we've been able to add a dinner for everyone on Saturday night instead of sending everyone off to fend for themselves. I'm really pleased with that!

I'm beginning to wonder about FL ANY month of the year! Remember, this year in Orlando, that early hurricane was just passing west of FL? All of our Italian friends skedaddled back to the airport. And quite a few people drove home a day early. We went to the park and it was great... a bit windy, but much cooler than usual.
Laura, what TIME does the Philly conf. start? I found two poss. flights, leaving at 12:55 or 4 p.m. (latter gets to Philly around 5:45).
At the CWD conference, I asked BD if they could spare just 3-5 lancets for Zack's yearly supply . They looked at me funny.
Skiing? Snowboarding? You have to do that in cold weather, right? Eeeewwwww.

On our way back home we had to drive through some of that hurricane. Scary
Registration opens at 5:00 Friday. The reception with the food and exhibitors is from 7-9. The usual.
there is a ski resort near me that used to have summer grass skiing....don't know if they still do it or not....

I'd guess that you can't plan on a winter locale because there could be a blizzard and NO one would show up. Laura, tell them about San Antonio in Feb!

I think Sam and Neal will arrive around 7. Sam's school is out at 3, then it's an hour to the airport, get there an hour before the flight... so they're shooting for a 5 p.m. flight. Then stuck in traffic on the Philly end.
That's the problem when you need snow...you might get it and no one could get there.

Oh! San Antonio weather was awful! It was February, and they had the worst ice storm in history. The freeways shut down. The airport shut down. Our hotel lost heat (and part of it was open-air... we all wore coats to sessions). And only half the people who registered could actually get there.
Nope, we'll stick with warmer venues.
Philly traffic is horrid...we have camped out at the philly zoo and usually go on a saturday night to avoid the traffic....Oh meghan this is safe..we actually took a camp of "developmentally" delayed kids to do it...course small hill...

Bernadette Tull is going to be in charge of registration... and Julia may be coming. If so, they are totally in charge. If Julia doesn't come, yes, most definitely help is needed at registration. Do I see your hand going up to volunteer, Ms Meghan?

The photos from the San Antonio conference are pretty funny. Everyone in gloves and hats, as opposed to bathing suits and shorts...
snow under the clothes....that gets cold, fast!

Thanks, Wendy! I am certain that help will be needed... let's wait and see how the registration numbers turn out in terms of how many kids are in each age group. That will determine where the most adult volunteer help is needed.
I really want to go to the conference in Florida next July, mainly for McKenzie to meet other D kids. I would be fine taking her by myself but would like to make it a family trip. Do many parents bring there non-D kids? My son will just be turning 4.
No problem Laura...and if you want a teen to help out..i could probably drag my one niece along...she will use the hours towards her gold award...

My non D daughter loved the '04 FFL conferece.
Lizabeth, the conference is for the ENTIRE family. Everyone brings their kids! There is only one instance where your kids with type 1 will go into a separate room from the other kids... and that is when we pull the siblings away for a sibling discussion group. Otherwise, all the activites are for all kids. Kids 5 and under are in childcare (all kids together) and the diabetes care is excellent.

Hi. Barbie. I was going to say that one parent may find that pool time is a fav. activity for the non-D kids, esp. a four year old.
Are there volunteer opportunities for teens before the Florida conference, or just for adults?

I just got here. Lost track of time.
My daughter, Carolyn, is 18. She doesn't have diabetes. She's been coming to these conferences since Day 1, and now that she's a young adult, she is coming back this summer to volunteer her time with the younger kids. So is Brenda's daughter, Marissa. It's a way to give back, and to give the younger kids some great role models!

Barbie... volunteer as in Tuesday before the conference? I'm sure there are things to do. Lauren Lanning and Mary Podjasek are in charge of the volunteers this year (we are shifting it to Mary so that Lauren can focus more on the elementary group programming).

We stayed for an extra day for sightseeing after the '04 FFL and the hotel was so empty with the conference over. It felt very anticlimactic and we all agreed thate getting there before things start would be more fun. But it would be neat for the kids to have something to do. They like to be useful sometimes.

If we wanted to be in on the beginning of the pre-conference prep, when should we plan to arrive in Orlando?
We're planning to arrive on Monday this year. Last year, we came on Saturday because the Italian group was arriving Sunday and we needed to prepare. Monday is plenty of time this year. On Tuesday, we actually start setting up the exhibit hall...and that will involve setting up the Quilt. Tuesday night is the Volunteer Reception poolside... I am expecting at least 500 people to be there. We have a big sponsor for it, so lots of yummy food. So please DO plan to be there at least on Tuesday. The kids can go to Universal Studios if they want. Or simply hang at the pool. It is a fabulous venue.
Ok, Laura - hopefully you haven't mentioned this but tell us some of the "new" stuff at the upcoming conferences

i'm coming in sunday to orlando....i want to go to Cocoa beach (about an hour from Orlando)
btw, the Friends for Life website will be 'live' on Sunday. We've been working on it this week. Sessions and faculty are listed, but no set program yet. We're still fiddling with that. This year, the kids in every age group will have sessions - not just sports and play. I think we've taken the best from 2004 and 2005 and combined them!

actually one of our workers spends his "winters" near Cocoa Beach I think..he said he was about an hour from Orlando..
What's great about cocoa beach? (asks a Californian who has never been south of the Carolinas)
Yes! SeaWorld is going to be great fun on Saturday. We have the Sea Harbor Plaza from 11-3 on Saturday... there will be a big BBQ... but ALSO... SeaWorld animal and character appearances, the Clydesdales will make a visit, and a few other fun things up my sleeve! This is the Benefit Day. Details will be on the website. Remember that there are WATER rides at this park - last time we went, some of the kids got totally soaked in salt water. They looked surprised about it, even thought they were sitting in the Soak Zone!
it's a nice beach, and the original Ron Jon's surf shop is there...
one bit of forwarning sneakers get stinky from the salt water....

Connie - New stuff - check out the faculty when the FFL site comes up on Sunday. We have a lot of new speakers this year, including Bill Clarke who is going to do a presentation on Driving and Teens (to both the parent group and the teen group). And we have Ragnar Hanas coming from Sweden - he's been to a CWD conference a few years back, and people just loved him. His new book is fabulous. And, as I mentioned a few minutes ago, we have a couple of pro athletes coming... Jay Leeuwenburg and Chris Dudley. I also just spoke with pilot Doug Cairns, who will be attempting to break a time record involving the North Pole (and some other cool things I can't divulge)... but he would like to be with us as well.
Well, we don't surf too much here in southwest Ohio!

It's way warmer than the Pacific. Neal has been scuba diving in both places, and he needs a dry suit for the Pacific!
I don;t know about Cocoa beach....just the caymans....and even when I was scuba diving in the caymans last summer, I wore a wet suit...

I think the ocean is very warm in July, unlike that CA surf which I've heard is quite chilly all the time.

the ocean water is still only about 85, which sounds warm, but when you are in it for a while, it gets cold and you get cold....
Only have ever been in the Atlantic ocean..and it is usually warm...
Also, lots of people asked for Clare Rosenfeld to come back and do her presentation about Diabetes Around the World (mostly the Third World in her travels) to each of the kids groups. That is going to happen.
water temp down here is around 82 now in November.
We're flying, I'm pretty sure - but we could pack along our shorty wetsuits. Alison would like to try surfing, if she could learn in a day. Is that possible? We don't surf in California - too cold, too rocky and too many great white sharks for my taste.
Lizabeth, we have a special session on Weds afternoon, the first day of the conference... called First Timers Event. If you do come to the conference, don't miss it! Jeff and I will explain a bit about 'how to do the conference' - which can seem pretty complicated once you look at the schedule. So much to choose from, so little time! Anyway, it's lots of fun - you meet hundreds of other new folks and just get a head start on things.
85 is plenty warm - we're used to 55 out here. Brrrrr.

Well, there are sharks in FL. Not great whites, but there are some areas that do see shark trouble. And others that actually cater to divers who want 'shark experiences.' The only shark experience I want is on my plate. It's pretty good on the grill.

Expecting about 2,500 people for Orlando. And expecting 300-350 for Philadelphia. The space can accomodate a few more than that, but we'd be sardines. I'd prefer a bit of elbow room. And I have no idea how quickly the rooms will sell out.
Oh - for the FFL rooms, the info to make reservations will be online this Sunday. You don't have any penalty for canceling, so if you think you will be attending, it would be a really good idea to hold a room!
Meghan, you and your fish nuggets! I forgot how you hated those. I'll have to make sure they're on your menu when you visit next week. Is it just the fried stuff you dislike, or do you not like fish, period?

Shark tastes like swordfish. REally good marinated in some Italian dressing and done on the grill. Low cal, no carb.

Barbie, Sorry you missed FL last year. Will Cross and Jay Hewitt, the triathlete, were incredible speakers. I missed Kris in L.A. and I don't think GH is a great speaker.
GH may not be a great speaker, but he sure is easy on the eyes!
Actually, I don't play a big role in determining which athletes and VIPs participate. The sponsoring companies have certain athletes and spokespeople who are under contract with them, and the companies make suggestions to me for who they might like to bring. Kris Freeman was sponsored by LifeScan two years ago. Will Cross was sponsored by Novo Nordisk. I'm not sure who the companies are bringing - if anyone - this year.

Reminds me that we need to get Animas to hand out pedometers at the Conf. I use mine all the time. I recently walked over 28,000 steps one day! I usually don't walk that much except at the FFL Conferences.
I like the pedometers, too.....they really help me to WANT to walk more...just to get the steps in!
what were you doing that you walked 28,000 steps, Brenda....? That is amazing!
I'll ask if they'll sponsor the pedometers again. If they aren't up for it, I'll bet another company would do it. Maybe Novo Nordisk since they are sponsoring Sports Central.
I think that next summer we need to have a contest... everyone against Natalie's pedometer. Whoever gets in more steps per day than she does, wins a prize!
Meghan, I think I must have walked my "usual" 6 miles or about 12,200 steps then who knows? Maybe it was a day I mowed the lawn and did other yard work. Beats me.
I walked over 15,000 steps yesterday mulching the yard.

I have taken to walking the mall...it is warm, and DRY and it gets me out to exercise, but I STILL don't get 10000 steps

Now that we're headed for another FFL conference, I really have to get Brian's quilt square done. He understood why it wasn't done last time, but he'd be bummed not to see it up there at the next conference.
Natalie works more than anyone I've ever seen when is leading the teens at our conferences. She doesn't stop. She's always 'on' from the day people arrive to the day the kids go home.

We are working with the ADA and trying very hard to get the Quilt to the Mall sometime around the ADA conference. Space and funding are both issues. If we are able to swing this, it would wonderful to have CWD kids come stand by their squares with their congressmen, etc., and really make an advocacy event out of it! I know this has been Jeff's dream for awhile - it just takes a lot of dollars and organization to make it all come together. Stay tuned.
