hi Jay
Billetdeaux CWD Events, Sam's mom  (66.82.9.44) Wed Jan 18 08:58:50 PM EST 2006
Hey Ellen, be sure to tell Zack that we've added a young adults night out at the conference this summer. It'll be Friday night. The 'kids' will need to decide whether they want to have dinner and spend the evening at CityWalk (Universal) or Pleasure Island (Disney). We'll arrange transportation, make dinner reservations, and send them. It will be the first 'official' young adults night out! (Yes, Meghan, you can go...)
Jay  (63.42.68.129) Wed Jan 18 08:58:57 PM EST 2006
How are you?
Natalie T1, pumper, Teen Program Director  (66.7.133.180) Wed Jan 18 08:59:12 PM EST 2006
Hello!
Billetdeaux CWD Events, Sam's mom  (66.82.9.44) Wed Jan 18 08:59:44 PM EST 2006
Forgot to add - the 'young adults' definition is really college-age. So, if you're 18 and still in high school, you might do best with the teens. If you're 30 and still in college, you're probably best with the older adults!

Hey Natalie!
Hi Jay!
Meghan, to answer your question - yes, I've been to Discovery Cove. Very expensive 5 second kiss with a dolphin. BUT I did get a photo.![]()
Billetdeaux CWD Events, Sam's mom  (66.82.9.44) Wed Jan 18 09:00:59 PM EST 2006
So Zack fits perfectly! Is he excited about college?
Natalie T1, pumper, Teen Program Director  (66.7.133.180) Wed Jan 18 09:01:11 PM EST 2006
Meghan, I have been to Discovery Cove...Pretty expensive for the actual dolphin time, but the park itself is great...Cost for just the park is upwards of 100 dollars for the day...![]()
Billetdeaux CWD Events, Sam's mom  (66.82.9.44) Wed Jan 18 09:01:31 PM EST 2006
How are you doing, Jay? Have you and your mom decided about coming to Orlando?
Meghan t1 since 1984  (72.255.80.152) Wed Jan 18 09:01:51 PM EST 2006
That is expensive..and then the dolphin time is 270 on top of that?

We have some tried-n-true speakers from previous years (wonderful folks like Richard Rubin, Betty Brackenridge, Fran Kaufman - they have been with us each and every conference forever); and we have some very exciting new speakers - Irl Hirsch, Ragnar Hanas, William Clarke, Nathaniel Clark... it's going to be a fabulous program.

The issue is where they can be hooked up. Ours require Playstation. Some are for XBox. I think Lauren Lanning might have them, too, maybe a direct connection to her t.v. Can't remember.
Billetdeaux CWD Events, Sam's mom  (66.82.9.44) Wed Jan 18 09:17:40 PM EST 2006
No need to bring them... if we are able to fit in DDR in one of the teen or tweener activity times, we'll be renting lots of pads/units or whatever they are called. Kim Kelly and Melissa Ringley have all the information on this. I don't think it helps to bring your own - you have to hook into the main program, right?

If you all feel strongly that this would be a good activity, I can pass that along to Kim and Melissa - it would be a Friday night set-up, probably for the Tweener Group. If Teens would like it as well, we'd have to arrange a different place for it, and it would be on Thursday after the banquet. Email me privately if you feel strongly one way or the other.

Stacey,
we are on the trail that runs from Philly to Valley Forge, so if it is nice we will go towards VF...Philly (the city) is tough in 4 hour increments...What does Jesse want to do ????

Hi Pam - I'm excited about Philly, too. It's going to be a great group of families. I like when we have a mix of 'old' and 'new' - and right now I recognize half of the families and the others are new to our conferences. Your family will have a wonderful experience.![]()

Hi Renee!
Billetdeaux CWD Events, Sam's mom  (66.82.9.44) Wed Jan 18 09:26:53 PM EST 2006
With regard to sports at the summer conference - once the schedule is posted, you'll see that the kids have a mix of 'sit down' and 'be active' choices. Some of it involves sports (if they want to participate). And some of the sports are outdoors. Remember, it's July in Orlando, so outdoors is a steambath. On Friday, the teens who participate in all 4 sessions Thursday will get to go to Islands of Adventure. If they blow off Thursday, they don't get to participate. Natalie will be policing it this year - they can't just hop on the bus!

In Philly this year - and in all future regional conferences - we'll actually all have dinner together (what a concept) - the teens can dine in their area and then follow-up with a party or whatever other activity they and the teen staff decide. It's very spontaneous - Natalie does a great job of following what the kids want to do.

Thanks for asking about the Adventures program, Deb.I think it's pretty exciting. What we are hoping to do is to continue to support older teens and young adults (college age) by taking them on various Adventures. Some will truly be quite adventurous - like learning how to scuba or rock climb - others are more cultural, like a weekend in New York or Chicago (although some might call that adventurous!). We are not so much concerned with the numbers of kids and families who participate, as we are with teaching the concept that these things are possible. Travel and adventure - and taking risks beyond your own boundaries - are possible. Does that make sense?

Yes, for both conferences (Philly and Orlando), it is best to book as soon as you can. At both places, we have limited room blocks, and once those rooms are gone, you would need to go to other hotels. In Orlando, the hotel is much smaller than Disney. Disney had 3,000 rooms - and we utilized only a small portion of them. At the Renaissance, we will have most of the hotel. But when those rooms are taken, that's it.

Jay - Clare is doing her presentation on Diabetes World Adventures both Thursday afternoon and Friday afternoon. We're hoping that both kids and adults will attend this year. Clare did a small presentation last year, and it was excellent. Lots of parents said they wanted their kids to see it, so we invited Clare back to present again to a larger group. I'm glad she was able to free up the time to do it!

Sure can, Heather. Last year, there were about 12 families from Canada. So, if you figure roughly 4 people per family, that's about 50. But, I will know by July 1 because that's when registration closes. After that, you have to register at the hotel.

Laura, per a previous suggestion from Natalie, will there be some type of sticker for parents to place on the name tag of each child with diabetes? That way, if we see a child sleeping or acting unusual, we can immediately see if the child may be low.

Aaargh! You opened the can of worms, Brenda! We are having discussion about 'labeling' kids with diabetes, and we aren't agreeing on whether to do it or not. Some of our staff feel very strongly both ways. I haven't decided yet. I DO know that the teens will have tyvek wristbands on Thurs and Fri. Natalie needs to be able to find them - particularly in the park - and she needs to know which ones have diabetes so the staff can get them to check and record their bg on our data sheet. With regard to ALL kids with type 1, we hope they will be wearing medical alert identification of some sort. The tweener and elementary group leaders will be making their recommendations to me about whether their kids will have the tyvek bracelets or something else (or nothing else). If you feel strongly either way, please email me privately. I'm interested in your input.

About ID'ing the kids w/ diabetes, I liked the temp tattoos they had at one of the booths the 1st yr we came to disney. It could be a good "it's o.k to let others know you have diabetes" initiation at the conference. That's my 2 cents.![]()
Brenda H. mom of Marissa, 18, dx'd 9/89  (216.68.227.251) Wed Jan 18 10:04:59 PM EST 2006
Well, I can see both sides of the "labeling" issue. I think the stickers would be ok because it's to identify them in case of emergency, not like, "Euuwww, you have diabetes." I don't think anyone in our group feels that way. But, I don't make the decision.![]()
Billetdeaux CWD Events, Sam's mom  (66.82.9.44) Wed Jan 18 10:05:26 PM EST 2006
Wendy - That is what we're doing with the teens. The tweener and elementary group leaders aren't sure they want to do that. The teens go offsite, so we absolutely need to know which kids are 'ours' vs everyone else in the world. The tweeners and elementary kids stay on site, with their supervisors, in their designated session rooms. It's less of an issue of knowing who is in your group. If every child with diabetes wore a medical alert bracelet, it wouldn't be an issue. But since they don't, it is something we need to think about.

I'm against the labeling. I think the kids go to the conference and finally feel fully accepted etc. and to suddenly have to be labeled doesn't seem right. If any kid looks tired or out of sorts, we can simply ask if they are ok.

I feel that the kids with diabetes must have some sort of ID...in a group of 250 6-9 year olds, I feel it is imperative to be able to ID them fast, and not have to ask...

Way too complicated (printing in a different color ink). I'm in charge of the name badges this year, and I just figured out how to get NAMES on the darned labels, never mind change the color ink...
The issue is, do we identify the kids or don't we? If we do, then it doesn't matter how... we can do wristbands or tattoos or purple headbands...

Lisa, I think Laura has to stick to her guns on the age thing. It gets even more interesting when a child who's 12, turning 13 in 2 weeks, wants to attend the "teen" dance. Then, there's another kid turning 13 in 4 weeks, etc. It's a no win situation. You can't please everyone, all the time.
Billetdeaux CWD Events, Sam's mom  (66.82.9.44) Wed Jan 18 10:11:10 PM EST 2006
We are very strict about the ages. It's an insurance thing. Look at it this way... all of the '5 almost 6' year old kids will be together. None will be able to move up into the older group. So, they can enjoy each other's company - and they will have a blast in childcare. It is ALWAYS fun.

That's true, Brenda. And another argument for why we need to give the kids something that identifies them in the same way. We also were talking about asking our faculty and staff with type 1 to wear the tyvek bracelets - so the younger kids can identify them, see how cool they are, and have very visible role models. For kids who are shy about wearing an id, perhaps this would help.
