It's slow this time of year for chats. We hope to have lots more, though. These conference chats do occur monthly. Their purpose is to discuss upcoming CWD events, answer people's questions about them, make buddies prior to the conferences, etc. We have some new programs in 2006, including a soccer camp, a teen adventure in Colorado, and a young adult weekend in San Francisco.

Hey MommaBagel![]()
Mike, we have a conference next month in Philly, which is probably as close as we'll get to New England. All of our events are listed online: http://www.childrenwithdiabetes.com/activities/

Yep, I had to go make popcorn (throw a bag in the microwave--hard mom work) for Tim. He's finally over his stomach bug and needs to regain the 4 pounds he lost.

I'm afraid popcorn is one thing I just don't do well. Unless it's microwave. Neal is a great popcorn maker.
So - on to business... Welcome to the Conferences/Events Chat! Anything relating to CWD events is fair game for discussion...

Brenda H. mom of Marissa, 18, dx'd 9/89  (216.68.227.251) Thu Feb 16 09:08:44 PM EST 2006
Well, we got a new microwave in Dec. and it makes great popcorn. This thing has so many features, I don't think I'll ever use them all. Kathryn prefers the
"soften" button for ice cream. I like to use it to soften cream cheese. You push Soften, then 1 for cream cheese, 2 for whatever and 3 for ice cream. Way too complicated for me.

Some good news to start with. For those folks coming to Philadelphia next month... we have sold out our room block three times. I keep extending it, and the rooms keep getting reserved... this will be our biggest regional conference yet. And - wonderfully - half the participants are brand new to CWD! That makes me very happy because they will get to meet the other half of you who have been around CWD for a long time and can be so helpful and supportive!

Yes, there are. Navy and white, if you want to plan your outfits. You can wear your STAFF shirt, though, if you'd prefer, since you'll be working with the elementary group.

For anyone interested, CWD will likely hold a young adults weekend in New York City next year. I have a proposal in hand... and emails from lots of young adults (college age, 18-25 or so) who would like to participate. So, I'm trying to make it happen. Stay tuned.

Mike, maybe you could volunteer to be a chaperone? I don't mean to be rude, but how old are you these days? I don't think you're young enough for the 18-25 group.
Billetdeaux CWD Events, Moderator, Sam and Carolyn's mom  (69.19.14.15) Thu Feb 16 09:15:25 PM EST 2006

So - here's some hot news (if you're a teen). I've had quite a few emails from the teens asking if the Teen Dinner Dance on Friday (from 8- midnight) could be 'semi-formal' (i.e., wear a nice party dress if you'd like, but you don't have to). I'm leaning toward 'yes' - what do you all think? As long as it's not mandatory? The teens really do like to dress up.

I'll chaperone that group, Brenda, as long as there is no coating of the staff in gooey stuff...we used to have to do that at diabetes camp

The guys don't have to do a big dress-up thing (although Sam wants to wear a white tux). Anything but jeans and cut-offs and tees is ok. The girls are really the ones who like to go all-out, and I think we should let them.

Re the Young Adult program. We do not have chaperones. We have staff accompanying and leading the program. Medical staff as well. The purpose is to have a fun weekend wherever we are - sightsee, do active things outdoors if the weather permits, eat at some great places, see some shows if that's what people want to do.

We aren't doing the matching up of families this year - but we are doing a personal welcome when a new family registers, and we follow up to see if they have questions and how we might help. The First-Timers session on Weds afternoon is going to be much better organized this year. I'm expecting about 400 people (I learned from last year). Lots of food. Tables around the perimeter with the kids program staff so families can match faces to names, etc.

Jeff always has a stash of blank squares for people who want to decorate them at home. In Philly, we're aiming to have several dozen blank squares for families to decorate right on site. I've emailed the Philly list explaining this, and asking people to bring iron on transfers to move things along. Of course, you may bring your quilt square home to finish it. The point is to have a wonderful square that reflects your child and your family, and that tells a story to all those who view it. It's a powerful thing.

NO! The hotel is having a great deal of trouble with their reservation systems when you call the 800 number. Call the 407 number and you will talk directly with the hotel, and they will give you a reservation. There are 400 double/double rooms in our block, and as of this weekend, about a third of them are reserved.

Billetdeaux CWD Events, Moderator, Sam and Carolyn's mom  (69.19.14.25) Thu Feb 16 09:58:25 PM EST 2006
The Renaissance Orlando Resort: 407-351-5555. If you have trouble, request Carol Martin. She is in charge of our group reservations. The problem is that the hotel took all the double double rooms offline, so no one else but our group can reserve them. That doesn't show up when someone calls the 800 number - the doubles just all look taken (which they are, by CWD). It's a stupid glitch in the system which they know about, but can't seem to fix. Very frustrating. I hope that people will call me if they have difficulty with reservations.

Stacey ... Marissa has also asked to update her quilt. I guess it will be OK.
Brenda H. mom of Marissa, 18, dx'd 9/89  (216.68.227.251) Thu Feb 16 10:04:41 PM EST 2006
Oooh, I know that one Stacey. No, he's stuck with the old one. "There are no provisions to update your quilt." That's exactly what he told Marissa about a week ago. Not even Marissa can switch her quilt ("mine's ugly" Yep, I made it, not Marissa.)
Jeff Hitchcock Marissa, 18, dx'd 9/1989  (216.68.227.251) Thu Feb 16 10:04:45 PM EST 2006

Stacey - Make a new quilt square! I'm going to for Sam. His photo is really, really old. That's part of the beauty of it!

heh ... I guess Brenda and I should get our stories straight.
I'd prefer no updates to quilts -- they represent a point in time.

Check the BG every 2 hours or so, esp. if there are ketones. You need to check for them, even if Emily is in range or low.

chefmom, often as you can and you have to check for ketones. Do you have a precision xtra meter? dehydration and ketones can come on fast and furious. Have you spoken with her doctor? She can have normal or low blood sugar and ketones.
Wendy type 1/pumper  (71.1.59.222) Thu Feb 16 10:06:37 PM EST 2006
one or the other..also dehydration..make sure you check ketones chefmom

With a stomach bug, I'd check Sam every hour through the night. If bg drops and you can't keep carbs down, consider a glucagon minidose. Also, check for ketones. They can happen with illness, in the absence of high bgs. If there are ketones present, you need to give insulin and fluid to counteract.
Brenda H. mom of Marissa, 18, dx'd 9/89  (216.68.227.251) Thu Feb 16 10:08:02 PM EST 2006

didnt call endo...what can they tell me? I should call?
Ellen (FL) Zack 18, contributor: QUILT FOR LIFE  (205.188.116.73) Thu Feb 16 10:08:36 PM EST 2006
Chefmom, it's very important that you phone the ped endo - this can be considered an emergency.
Ellen (FL) Zack 18, contributor: QUILT FOR LIFE  (205.188.116.73) Thu Feb 16 10:08:53 PM EST 2006
They can tell you if they want you to go to the ER to get her hooked up with an IV.
Wendy type 1/pumper  (71.1.59.222) Thu Feb 16 10:09:03 PM EST 2006
I would call the endo...after checking ketones..they would help you with the insulin doses ...
chef mom, nurse mom mom of emily; 12 dxd 16 months lantus novolog  (69.115.207.139) Thu Feb 16 10:09:03 PM EST 2006
no omg didnt even realize so late....and no dinner...will call endo now...![]()
Brenda H. mom of Marissa, 18, dx'd 9/89  (216.68.227.251) Thu Feb 16 10:09:19 PM EST 2006
I'd call if you see no improvement in the next couple of hours. They don't really seem to care until your child has mod. or large ketones, is still puking, etc.
Stacey mom to Jesse dx.12/05/01.... pumping 4/03  (152.163.100.130) Thu Feb 16 10:09:32 PM EST 2006
lollipos are also a good way to get carbs into her... either that or a teaspoon of real soda every 10 minutes.. it doesnt really hit her stomach, but will keep BS up..
Brenda H. mom of Marissa, 18, dx'd 9/89  (216.68.227.251) Thu Feb 16 10:10:05 PM EST 2006
Don't they often recommend flat or room temp. soda?
Wendy type 1/pumper  (71.1.59.222) Thu Feb 16 10:10:53 PM EST 2006
yep they do Brenda..actually my endo said even when high and fighting ketones almost better to go with diet soda over water....she claimed less chance of it coming back up..
Brenda H. mom of Marissa, 18, dx'd 9/89  (216.68.227.251) Thu Feb 16 10:11:25 PM EST 2006
Hmm, just realized I have neither lollipops or reg. soda anywhere. Trying to get the kids to drink less soda. I do have one bottle of Powerade left from Timothy's stomach bug over the weekend. I will go hide it asap for the next emergency.
Ellen (FL) Zack 18, contributor: QUILT FOR LIFE  (205.188.116.73) Thu Feb 16 10:12:46 PM EST 2006
That's interesting because Zack hardly drinks soda but absolutely craves Diet Coke when bg is high.
Billetdeaux CWD Events, Moderator, Sam and Carolyn's mom  (69.19.14.28) Thu Feb 16 10:14:09 PM EST 2006
With vomiting and diarrhea - especially repeatedly - the concern really is dehydration, which can lead to DKA very quickly. It's nothing to fool with. If the vomiting and diarrhea have stopped, see if you can get some fluids back into her. If they haven't stopped, definitely call the endo, who might consider the ER for IV hydration. I hope you are able to test blood ketones - that is a key piece of information right now.
Ellen (FL) Zack 18, contributor: QUILT FOR LIFE  (205.188.116.73) Thu Feb 16 10:14:48 PM EST 2006
Well we don't keep it in the house. We have 2 24 hour Walgreens within 1 mile of our house so we run out and get what's necessary

There was an article in the latest issue of Diabetic Medicine about the importance of blood glucose testing.
http://www.blackwell-synergy.com/doi/abs/10.1111/j.1464-5491.2005.01771.x
I'm surprised more doctors don't push the use of the Precision Xtra for that purpose
