Hi Joe![]()
T - Lots of stuff happens on Wednesday, particularly the Focus Groups. There are a lot of them posted right now - they each take about 20-30 participants, and it is some wonderful discussion. Here's the link:
http://www.childrenwithdiabetes.com/activities/orlando2006/focusgroups.htm
Also, if you are going to volunteer during the conference, Tuesday evening is the Volunteer Family Reception (ice cream sundaes poolside - you get your volunteer assignment and t-shirt). It's fun. I suggest coming in late Tuesday if you can swing it.

Depends what you want to walk to. Sea World? Right across the parking lot. Other parks? Rent a car. We're going to rent one just so we don't have to bother with worrying about that aspect.

Hey Bernie![]()
I just sent you all the info to welcome the first group of first-timers! We have about 120 families registered right now, and about 25 are first-timers. For those who don't know, Bernie is the 'welcoming committee' for those families joining us for the first time - it can seem pretty big (2,000 people) - and a little scary if you've never been to one. Bernie's job is to help you figure out how to navigate the conference.

I once went on the Behind the Scenes tour at Sea World and it was fascinating, we saw the baby penguins in the very cold areas. Some of you may want to arrange to do that. And for the little ones, if you read Mr. Poppers Penguins before going...it's even more fun :-)

The teens go with a group of chaperones. Parents stay at the convention center and attend their own sessions. We have a dozen chaperones and staff all set. Transportation will be provided by Mears (bus), and entrance tickets and lunch vouchers will be provided for the kids. We'll have a check-in area where kids will need to come (check and report bg) before lunch in order to get their vouchers... and also we'll have 'wandering' staff with meters, glucose, phones, etc. to keep an eye on things. It will be a fun day.

Ellen - Can you post the link for the Quilt info? The Quilt will be displayed in the Exhibit Hall throughout the conference... better yet, if you get your quilt square in Jeff Hitchcock's hands by May 8, it will be part of a huge display in front of the U.S. Capitol building on June 8 as part of ADA's Call to Congress (we had a wonderful invitation from them to show the quilt during this event).

Bernie Trevor's Mum, 16, dx'd at 13  (70.160.204.201) Tue Mar 28 09:15:35 PM EST 2006

Billetdeaux CWD Events, Sam and Carolyn's mom  (66.82.9.60) Tue Mar 28 09:17:29 PM EST 2006
Not a lot of big water attractions at the park, so kids should keep their pumps on. There is one real soaker of a ride, and with that one, we'll have a CWD staff person sitting at a shaded table with a cooler, and we'll ask the kids to leave their pumps and meters (in marked plastic bags) so that it doesn't get drenched. There is also one electromagnetic ride - it's a kiddie roller coaster and we'll ask the teens not to go on it.

Billetdeaux CWD Events, Sam and Carolyn's mom  (66.82.9.60) Tue Mar 28 09:19:26 PM EST 2006
Don't worry about shy. Most kids are shy when they walk in - it doesn't take long before that is over and done with.
Billetdeaux CWD Events, Sam and Carolyn's mom  (66.82.9.60) Tue Mar 28 09:20:05 PM EST 2006
Oh - I don't remember (because it's a little kids ride, and the group we're bringing are teens). It's the mini-coaster.

Also want to remind everyone that the young adults (ages 18-25 or so) will be going out on FRIDAY evening to CityWalk. They're going to dinner and whatever entertainment venue they'd like at CityWalk - we're providing a shuttle over and back (leaving at 7, returning at 1). Marissa Hitchcock and Martyn Carr are coordinating the group's activities.

We also tried something in Philly which we are going to carry forward to Orlando. We'll have the kids in Tyvek bracelets Thurs/Fri/Sat. Bright green for those with type 1 (adults can wear them, too, so the kids can see what cool role models you are), bright orange for sibs and friends without type 1, and Mike (CWD dietitian) has suggested that those who need a gluten free diet have a yellow wristband as well - that helps us keep everyone safe. We'll be taking the kids swimming again, and we need to know at a glance which ones have type 1 and which don't. As I said, it worked great in Philly.

Hi toof - Please send your friend and her family to the CWD website. I'm glad you found us. There are 26,000+ pages of content on the www.childrenwithdiabetes.com website - and all of us have been in your friend's shoes. You're a good friend to be reading up. In answer to your question, when type 1 diabetes rears its head, the symptoms happen pretty quickly. And if untreated, kids will die without insulin.
This is a chat about CWD conferences... if you're looking to chat about diabetes in general, you might want to switch next door to the parents list.![]()

You may sign up for the focus groups by looking at the schedule, deciding which ones the different people in your family want to attend, and then emailing me. I keep the master list for each group. The max number per group is 30. Some are already nearly full... and still others haven't listed a topic yet, so more good groups will be opening. Here's the link to the schedule: http://www.childrenwithdiabetes.com/activities/orlando2006/ParentsSchedule.htm

Also - in answer to Ellen's question - there are a few focus groups that are specifically targeted for kids. The companies want their input on a variety of topics. Read the blurbs that go with the schedule... they each say if a particular group is specifically for kids, teens, or parents. Focus groups are very worthwhile. You can sign up for 1 or keep your entire day busy with 4. Plus... the companies feed you, which is always nice.
Billetdeaux CWD Events, Sam and Carolyn's mom  (66.82.9.60) Tue Mar 28 09:44:21 PM EST 2006
You don't register for specific sessions... just send in your registration (to me) and I sign up the kids for their particular age groups. Childcare closes at 100 kids. We're at about 25 right now. We're expecting about 200 teens again this year!

Also - and I can't stress this enough - if you have not made your hotel reservations... do it now. The room block is nearly two-thirds full. When the hotel is sold out, it's sold out. Please go online to the conference website for info about how to make hotel reservations. You can't access our conference room block via the regular Marriott phone numbers or website - we have a special reservations system, and you do need to use it.

... and did you see your name by it as 'session leader'...??? Just teasing you. We do need some crafts-minded parents to watch over the Quilt-decorating room at FFL. We'll have one room dedicated to decorating blank quilt squares. Kids need to bring a parent in order to work on their square in that room. If you're interested in staffing this, email me!

Stacey, I was against quilt-making. I thought you couldn't make one in one session. But, you can. Or you can start one and get a good start with input from others.

Wendsy - if you've had a sore throat since last week, do get checked. I know of 3 positive strep cases... which probably isn't any more than in a general population of 400 people, but we know they had it and were among us... so check it out if you are still sick.

Billetdeaux CWD Events, Sam and Carolyn's mom  (66.82.9.60) Tue Mar 28 10:00:36 PM EST 2006
Let me add one thing because someone emailed me today about it. Dress code. There isn't one. The conference is very informal. Shorts and t-shirts are fine. Obviously the kids need swimsuits for their pool time with the group. Banquet is a little dressier, but shorts and tees are still fine (some people wear slacks and dresses, but - um - I don't). The one exception is the Teen Dinner Dance on FRIDAY night. That is a dressier event. I know some of the girls will be quite fancy... Sam has a new suit... and on the other end of the spectrum, nice pants and a polo shirt are fine as well. Just no shorts, jeans, or cut-offs. Please share that with your teens.![]()

Nice polo and nice shorts are fine. As long as he feels comfortable. It's a 'dress up as much as you want' affair... but definitely don't dress down. I'm a bouncer for that evening - and I'll ask kids to go change! (seriously, it's the teens special evening, fancy dinner, etc.)
