Jeff says Marissa and some friends are driving up to Michigan to visit Kristin and go to the football game this weekend! Marissa doesn't really know much about football.
Are there sessions planned generally for college-aged kids at the conference in Orlando? I don't imagine we will get our son interested in going, but I know my husband and I would enjoy it.

Do any of you have specific questions about the upcoming conferences? We have a lot of events scheduled in the next year, from 'family weekends in SF and NYC' to the biggie in Orlando. And our first vacation/conference in Marco Island...
Brenda - Do they need a place to stay? Or eat dinner? I'd love to have them over. It's Wisconsin this weekend - not a big game (usually) but a fun one.
I don't know of specific plans for the "young adults," but I'm sure Marissa would love to meet Dean. She's 19, soph. at U. of Cincinnati.
Yes, we will definitely have college-oriented (we call them young adult) sessions at the Friends for Life conference. Also, many of the regular sessions are very appropriate for young adults.
My daughter, Carolyn, will be there. She is 19 as well.
I don't have a clue, Laura, but I'll make sure Marissa has your phone number should she fail to pack any diabetes supplies.

OSUMom, please tell your son that there are a LOT of young adults at the conference. He'd make a lot of new friends and have a great time. The young adult group is going to have a dinner on Friday night, and then go out afterwards for a social evening.

yes i had most of my care done there, the one interist was my primary and she was wonderful... i'm trying to remember her name (i baby sat her kids, and she used her husbands last name there and that is all i'm thinking of)

Maureen, my son sees his endo in December here again so wasn't going to get appts with an endo at OSU, but do you think we should?

Ok... to get to a quick conferences agenda... (ok if we don't spend a ton of time talking about them... it's early)... please speak up and ask away if you have any conferences questions. I'm here to answer them. Otherwise, I'm just letting the conversation go where it wants. Ok?
Yes, we are all well, and we are seriously thinking of doing New York with CWD, since we can just drive, so I am excited about that.
Brenda we have been very pleased with UC's The Diabetes Center. He was put on an insulin pump ASAP before heading to Columbus.
dr mary lynn kiacz, she is still there. dr mulholland was nice the 1 or 2 times i saw her too
Intissar - Would LOVE for you to come to NYC. It is going to be so much fun. I actually think most of the participants are not from New York, but rather from other places and wanting to see New York. We only have 25 rooms held in our block, though, so make a reservation soon if you think you are going to participate (you can always cancel the reservation without a penalty up to 72 hours in advance). I believe about half the rooms are already taken.
Laura, if we live in NYC, do we have to get a hotel room to participate?
That's great OSUMom. I would at least try to meet the endos in Columbus, in case of emergency.
Speaking of emergencies, I have a refilled Rx for Zofran--enough to take care of all those vomiting kids at the next three conferences!
Our younger kids have a long weekend and we are thinking about NY. Marissa is NOT interested.
i hated my endo here and it was easy for me to see an endo there (insurance wise and time wise). the appointments with dr kiacz are free and she would always get me in in a hurry if i needed something because i was an eastablushed patient, so he might wasnt to see her just as back up

Okay Brenda thanks. We purchased supplemental health insurance for the clinic on campus thinking he'd be more likely to go if he were sick if it were handy. But, certainly our medical insurance covers the OSU medical facilities.
Wow! Already. I will definately call the hotel tomorrow and make our reservation. Is a Broadway show going to fit in the agenda? I have been dying to go to the Lion King.

Unfortunately, for the bulk of the NYC event, yes you do. The event was initially planned as a young adult event, which is why we got 25 rooms and have a pretty minimal budget. We have to fill the rooms or we have a huge penalty. And part of the weekend together involves having meals together and sightseeing together, etc. So, if we just had people stay at home and come do the 'event stuff' with us during the day, we'd have serious budget problems. So - as it stands - the NYC weekend is for 25 families... and I will try very hard to get one dinner or lunch or fun activity where anyone can come and participate. Anyone who has ideas, please let me know. I don't know NYC that well.

Oooh. That didn't sound good. The reason a budget is smaller for 25 young adults is because they don't bring their whole families. So, our budget is planned for 25-50 people vs the 250-300 we usually have at a regional conference. Hope that makes sense.

Intissar - Yes, go ahead and make your own plans to go see the Lion King (buy tickets as soon as you can so you have a good choice in seats). I'm thinking that we'll have a mixed enough group in NYC that people will go different directions on Sat and Sun nights (Monday is a holiday). I want to see a show - I'd love to see Wicked again. But there are a few others I'd be happy to see for the first time. Lion King was great.
Marissa does not like NY--too noisy.
New York would be great...just not in the cards right now.
Help i am having problems with my seven year old, he had to be moved to another school due to no fulltime nurse, he is acting out and seems to be using diabetes as a crutch to see what he can get away with, his teacher has labeled him as a problem student and wants me to put him back in first grade and has seeked promission from the principal to doso, she is overwhelmed and said she has 9 other students with family and medical issues, i think i need to move him out of her class, does anyone have any suggestions?

Sorry I was late, we had construction in our school system and tomorrow is the FIRST day of school. big adjustment, first full year in school with D, so I am glad I got here
HI Diane - Good question re: Chicago. Yes, the dress is casual even for dinner... the teens should dress nicely (i.e., no cutoffs or junky shirts). They are in a really nice room on the top floor of the hotel... floor to ceiling windows. It's elegant. We, of course, are in the regular ballroom.

Dr. Kiacz is the primary at the student health center. The actual OSU endo have a HUGE waiting list, but if she calls for you, I was in within a week. Their pump program is amazing there. Thanks Brenda. It's been a rough 5 days since taking my son to college with his new diagnosis. Finally today I felt better for some reason.
Teani - Re: the 'emotional' sessions at Friends for Life. A big YES. First, we are going to have - on Weds which is Focus Group Day - two rooms going all day with Dr. Bob, Joe S., and Scott S. Then, during the regular conference schedule on Thurs and Fri, during most hours, there will be a choice of an 'emotional' type session - to discuss stress, family relationships, our kids, our own health, etc. We really increased the number of those sessions for next year. btw, the schedule is nearly done. Yay!

The rooms for NYC look to be about half full. Yes, it is now a family event (not enough 'takers' in the young adult category, although those young adults who come will have fun seeing the city with Natalie). We have to limit it to 25 families because of budget reasons... Hoping to do this again in a future year and plan for lots of people from the get-go. I'm sorry we have to impose a 'you have to stay at the hotel to participate' rule, but because of how the budget was structured, we have to do that.
Brenda, you will just have to join us in one of those classes! You need to take time for yourself too.

Cindy - Please check the webpage for this conference. Yes, there is a registration form and a $100 fee per family. The registration form just went online on Sunday, so I don't have any in hand... but half of the rooms have been reserved (which I know from the hotel). Until I have registration forms, I don't know how old the kids are.

Cindy - It'll be a good event. Getting our families together, no matter what the ages of the kids, is always wonderful. The kids mesh; exact ages don't really matter. Keep in touch with me, and as families register, I can give you more info on ages. I'm sure there will be at least a few younger kids.

On conference days at FFL, you will be busy all day, each day (Thurs and Fri). Most families come early (Sunday or Monday) and spend a few days at the parks. On Saturday, we all go to Magic Kingdom together. Most folks head home on Sunday.
I mean it just kind of makes sense because we don't have to travel at all
Brenda, did yall ever get anymore quilt square's? I want to make Craig one before next Fl. trip. My friend said she (might) have one. But I'm checking just in case.

Julia - wish we had thought more about it but no, we are not going. But I'm seriously considering the NYC family weekend. I wish we could make it to Marco Island - that looks so great and relaxing but just couldn't get the kids out of school.
Julia - I'm hoping the weather will be happy for us so that we can walk or bike across the Golden Gate Bridge. When I did my site visit there last year, it was 75 degrees and sunny - same time of year (early November). of course, if it's foggy and 50, I'll deal with it...

Connie - Nope, never would I have dreamed that these conferences would sell out. This is two in a row - Philly last March and now Chicago. And I think the same thing will happen in La Jolla in April (Focus on Pumping)... it's a good feeling.

In La Jolla, it's a smaller Marriott. I liked it a lot - walking distance to a wonderful outdoor pedestrian mall. Not far from beachy stuff. We'll have the website up in a week or so. I don't want to post it until after Chicago.

I feel the same way about trying new places. It's important to move the events around the country. We'll be having a regional conference in Seattle, one in Minneapolis, and another in Bethesda (Maryland). I have no idea how many people will come - hopefully a lot - but we at least need to offer something in these new spots.
