Hi Laura. Its cooling off but still quite nice surprisingly!
I actually just got back from spending 3 days in Orlando working on the conference. We have some very cool things happening. The main structure is in place, the speaker schedule is done, and nearly all of the sponsorships are spoken for. Those are the biggies this time of year. We absolutely have to have sponsorships or we can't have food! The companies have come through, though. They are wonderful.

We're ready! I can't wait to get back on Disney property where they know how to feed kids with celiac disease.
Two big additions... on Wednesday, Sports Central will be open all day long for kids and parents who want to play basketball or volleyball. We'll also have 'connect times' on Tuesday for those who come early. We'll announce where to 'connect' in the morning and afternoon with other families who have kids the same ages as yours... there won't be any structured activities, but we will help you make friends!
Disney is very good with any type of dietary accommodation. We'll have gluten free buffets as we always do... but beyond that, when you are elsewhere on Disney property, they do know what you are talking about when you say you need gluten free food. That IS exceptional!

We had very good flourless chocolate cake at the BOMA (Animal Kingdom Hotel)last year.

Rick plus 8 full time DESA volunteers will staff Sports Central from Wednesday morning through Friday afternoon.
Hey Laura or Brenda, is there anyway one of you could find out the name of a song that Dr.Bob in the stress class played? It was a very moving song and I would love to buy the cd.
We'll also have low stations and a nurse in Sports Central. And low stations and nurses in each of the main kids' rooms.
Ok, hope I don't need to go out to a pharmacy again to buy more tape.

Hi. This is my first time in the chat room. We attended the Orlando conference in July, five months after our son was diagnosed. I am very pleased at the CONTENT we received in the sessions. I travel on business and carry the papers and power point photocopies with me, so I can review themm on the planes and make notes of new things I want to try in regard to high and low-glycemic food index and the pump. ALways new material surfaces that now makes sense to me. We started pumping July 3 and then went to the conference. Wow! Some very, very helpful people there when he was running very high as the basal numbers were not right. We got a lot of good advice and friendly tips. SO, I am eager to get more involved with other families at this point.
Brenda, did you have to tape them down? I've considered doing that with mine a couple of times.
Brenda, tell him you need some time for yourself!
Also - one more wonderful addition to the conference... we will now have a Sunday breakfast so that everyone has a chance to say goodbye, exchange email addresses, etc. We've never had that in the past. But this year, I did get a sponsor. So, Saturday morning will be the Magical Memories breakfast (with the Disney princes and princesses, photographs, autographs, etc.), then we'll have special buses taking people to Magic Kingdom, and then we'll all spend the day there. There are fireworks pretty late that night. Everyone is on their own coming back to the hotel via Disney bus. Sunday morning, we have this last chance to all get together.
Laura, what day is the conference actually starting on next year?
Hi Eileen - That is wonderful feedback. I'm so glad that the content was helpful to you, and that you still find new things in it! I do sort of the same thing... since I'm so busy with running the conference, I rarely get a chance to sit in on any 'whole' sessions... but I pick up bits and pieces of new information each and every time.
No, one of the teens sprained his ankle and they used up most of the athletic tape. But, I do like your idea. I consdered an electric collar for our son who used to leave the yard when he was a toddler. ZAP!
The focus groups are all day Wednesday, and the Exhibit Hall opens Weds evening, with a big food reception. Also, if you are a volunteer, the Volunteer Reception is Tuesday evening (because lots of our volunteers start working on Weds). The First Timers reception is Weds at 3:00. Anyone who is new to the FFL conference should definitely plan on attending that!

Laura, Sunday breakfast is a wonderful idea! One last meal with friends before we head home. We usually come in on Wed and stay till Tues but we decided to do it the other way around next year.
next summer will be our 7th conference. we always learn something new. plus there are all those old friends to meet up with and new ones to make.

My family usually does a Monday to Monday stay, with the kids getting a couple days to play on their own (since they are older, I'm ok with them going to the parks via the Disney bus system) before the conference... and me getting Sunday afternoon to relax by the pool before heading home. I'm always ready for my own bed, though. Disney has great energy... but it's exhausting! Especially for us old folks, eh Brenda?
Sunday breakfast is a great idea. I just don't know if we will be able to stay that long. We drive. My son did not get any emails when he was there. I got 2, but somehow misplaced them.

Teani, if you or Craig want to connect up with any folks from last year - and you remember the names - just let me know. That's an easy fix.
The focus groups were quite useful. We discovered Dex4 glucose tablets (best taste, he says) and just yesterday I found them in bulk at Costco for $4.00 a bottle of 50. Further, we learned a more about Continuous Glucose Monitors and where the technology is at. Our Dr., has decided he wants our son to try the DexCom CGM, which was briefly covered in Orlando and was released to the market 2 weeks later. Not authorized for under-18, but some Endos are trying it to see how it goes. I would be curious to hear more about the state of CGM at the 07 conference.
I keep hoping Sarah will find Mr. Right and they can have the wedding at the Conference!

Another addition to this year... on Friday night, a Dessert with the Faculty from 9-11 p.m. The teens will be at their dinner dance, the tweeners will be at their social, and you are welcome to bring your younger kids with you if you'd like. The faculty will be there for 1:1 discussion... a good time to follow up with questions or thoughts after two full days of content.
Some day (5 years?), I could see Marissa wanting two weddings: here and at the Conf. so all her old (and new) buddies can attend. Better win Powerball to pay for it.
kc--are you going to be in Orlando?
Eileen, you'll hear plenty about CGM. Actually, there will be updated info on CGM at both the Marco Island and La Jolla conferences prior to the summer. It's a hot topic.

I think we'll skip the Ballroom Dancing this year - the space is absolutely packed solid. We'll come back to it in 2008 when we're back at the Renaissance.

kc-did you go to the regional conf. in Philly? I heard it was nice. I didn't go.
Hey - Nothing wrong with being a CWD grandparent! Cindy Webb is one of the most active conference participants we have... and she is coordinating the Grandparents sessions. Betty Brackenridge will be leading them, and there will be lots of hands-on, from the 'easiest stuff' (bg testing) to the 'scarier stuff' (pushing buttons on a pump and trying an infusion set).
No we were having serious problems with the kids school and had to miss it

I really like the dessert idea. I would have to drag my husband back into the ballroom dancing! By the way, someone got a picture of us on the dance floor. I sure wish I knew who did. You won't hardly catch my hubby dancing.
La Jolla will be similar to San Diego (Mission Valley) - updated content, though. The website will be up this weekend. Schedule is done and faculty confirmed. Phew!

I last saw my husband dance at his sister's wedding in 1989! We did attend a wedding in 1995, but I don't remember him dancing; we were too busy entertaining our then 13 mo. old son.
Brenda knows, because I keep trying to find someone to go out on the floor with me. Which by the way she did!
I think Teani and I were out there on the dance floor after the banquet. It was fun and tiring. Laura is too frazzled and exhausted so she gets to watch everyone else dance.
KC - Are you going to stay at the Coronado the entire time, or are you moving around? There are quite a few families who are going early (i.e., the weekend before the conference starts). If you plan to be on site, email me and I'll connect you with others who are there early as well. It's nice to have CWD buddies to hang out with.

While we missed the registration cut-off for the Phila. conf., we called Animas and Medtronic and asked if we could meet reps there. They met with us and introduced us to a few other exhibitors. We literally picked up the literature on 7 pump companies and it helped us narrow our choices. We are in NJ, and when we met the rep for Animas, it turns out we live in the same town and go to the same church. We really feel CWD in Phila. --even just for the exhibit floor--was really a contributing factor to helping us decide on glucose monitors (and learning there was so much more then what we left the hospital with) and pumps. And the little bit of what we saw in Phila. encouraged us to register for the Orlando conference.
We are at CSR from July 10-15 and BCV from July 15 -22
KC--there's a lot of walking at the Coronado. Our son will be 13 at the Conf. He doesn't have diabetes, but maybe will show your son around (cell phones or walkie talkies come in very handy).
Laura this sounds great but speaking of tired and frazzled, 24 hours of no pump has left me ready to head off to bed here in the East. I can't wait to connect with our CWD family--the ones we have already met and the ones we are waiting to put faces to the years of emails!

2008 hotel is back at the Renaissance Sea World. Actually 2008, 2010, and 2012. We have to book way in advance for how much convention space and sleeping rooms we need.

I was just in San Diego last week, but I also stayed on Coronado Island for a few days six weeks ago. Make sure to walk around the island. It's just terrfic. The shops and cuisine are more interesting than the Gaslamp Quarter in San Diego where I was just for 5 days. I was "captive" at a conference in the convention center but I was yearning for the water taxi to Coronado Island from my hotel room window. Do tour Coronado Island if you are heading there.
What is the 2007 hotel? I need to save up!

Great! So he'll be a teen! They are going to have a blast this year. Teen Day on Friday will be at Disney's MGM (sponsored by Abbott). The bus will pick them up and they'll spend all day there. They'll head back around 5. From 8-midnight, they have a Teen Dinner Dance. It's fancy-ish. No jeans, no shorts... the girls wear dresses. It's very fun. The teens love it.
Brenda you are definately right about cell phones/walkie talkies...with 3 teens we have moved on to all have cell phones...makes things a lot easier

The hotel is Disney's Coronado Springs Resort - same venue we've been at in 2001, 2003, and 2005.
How are we going to get Tim to dress nicely? Good thing I have several months to get him something nice to wear.

To bad my son that likes to dress up probably won't be there yet...Connor is not my fancy guy...might be a struggle.

The teens also have their own programming on Thursday, which they need to attend in order to go to MGM on Friday. The programming is a mix of fun and serious... active and discussion. And ALL programs for all age kids are for both siblings and kids with type 1 (and friends, too).

The teen coordinator is Natalie Bellini. She has been doing this for years. She was a teen with diabetes herself... and she really relates well to them.
Honest? Your favorite attraction was Millionaire? Mine has always been Mermaid - except it's not as good as it was the first year. They've calmed down on the bubbles and water effects.
Laura, Parker just came in and says to tell you "Hi" and that he has already has some money saved for the Escobars.
My kids know that the conference stuff needs to be attended...We said we would never do WDW in the middle of the summer again...which is why we didn't attend the one 2 yrs ago...but this year after hearing all the great things I decided we had to go to the one in WDW
Aw, c'mon. Your 13 year olds can put on something other than shorts or jeans. It doesn't have to be FANCY fancy (although some kids will be dressed that way). And it will be way fun because parents won't be there (but Chris Tull and I will be...)

Yeah Millionaire was it for us...over the last 5 yrs we got to know many of the cast members and became really close friends. It was sad to see it close. We actually made a special trip down in Aug to make sure we were there for the last show...
Well, I can't speak for Connor, but I know it's really hard to find clothes for Tim. 10 slim is really hard to find. I saw two pair of Levis today and snatched them up before they disappeared. I will look for khakis or such. As I said, I have time....
Yeah...he can put on other stuff...he just isnt' the easy one to talk into putting stuff on...but maybe his older sis can talk him into doing it better then I can.

Yeah Connor is a Slim 16...The taller he gets the more difficult it becomes finding pants that fit his slim build.
The excitement of the dance - especially after a day at MGM with good buddies - will be contagious. I'll bet you won't have a problem with either of the boys (Connor or Tim) getting ready!
We would love to answer questions...I'm sure we probably not the only disney fanatics...but hey DX number 2 child was made while we were on a disney trip 2 yrs ago...LOL

As long as it isn't mentioned that girls might be going ...LOL My 12 almost 13 yr old son has no interest...driving me crazy...the girls keep calling but he just isn't interested yet...probabaly a good thing in the long run..
KC - Similarly with Sam. Actually, he was dx'd 10 days before we were supposed to go to Disney. The trip was paid for already... and we went... and I was scared to death... and Disney was so accommodating that I needn't have worried. It was our first travel experience with diabetes. I have very positive feelings toward Disney because of that.

Debbie - On another event note, I had conversation with Dr. S in Italy today. It looks like the exchange program in August is a go. Small groups of teens - maybe 6 or 7. just to get things started. Future years will involve more kids.

Yes! We had snow - measurable - the day Sam and I left for our Orlando visit last weekend. It was 32 degrees and just awful! It doesn't usually snow here until later in November. The pumpkin farms had to bring in all their pumpkins so they wouldn't freeze and rot before Halloween!

It is. CWD has been working with a group in Italy for a few years. We've had some very small exchanges of students back and forth - a week here, a week there. We're going to build on it. I'll post more on the CWD website when it is official! But you can read about some of the past events on the conferences page. It's a great relationship, and I really hope we can build it.
