I'm doing well; how are you?
It's 72 degrees right now; we are sitting with the patio door open...was up to about 80 today, I think.
Ok, don't rub it in. 40 and raining... supposed to t-storm tonight (which is weird), and the snow showers tomorrow through the weekend. Pretty dreary. At least if it's going to snow, it should stick!
Sorry, that sounds so bragging-ish...I have no control over the weather, but I do enjoy it at this time of year!
Wow, snow...I lived in snow-country (Flagstaff, AZ) for college, and though it's beautiful and I love it, I don't want to shovel it. We do miss out on having actual "seasons"...I'm trying to teach my kindergartners about fall right now, and they just can't get it...no wonder, right?
I love the Fall, and I love a cold, crisp Thanksgiving. Last year, we had about a foot or so of snow on Weds before Thanksgiving, and I had a lot of company driving hours and hours from out of town. The roads were awful!
Is this adults only?

We're just talking about Thanksgiving now. Traveling. Weather. Chit chat. What are you doing for Thanksgiving, Jade?
I remember a thunderstorm in college with the snow coming down - it was VERY weird. Every so often there will be snow at the holidays if we go to my dad's cabin (about 3 hours from Phx, up in the mtns) but it generally isn't much and doesn't stick. We are going to the cabin this year for the first time in about 3 years; I'm looking forward to getting to wear "warm" clothes! It will be one of my brothers and his wife, my dad, and the 4 of us...others are coming up on Friday, I think, after doing family t-giving here in town. How about you; everyone coming to you this year?

That sounds really fun! I'm having a couple of friends from out of town, and Neal's folks are coming from Pittsburgh. I like cooking the meal.
Sam is going to visit his girlfriend's family in Orlando, though. It will be odd not having him here.
Well Billetdeaux, my uncle is getting married that weekend so we'll be traveling for the wedding

That's exciting, Jade! What a lovely time to have a wedding.
My kitchen is torn up right now, so I am glad not to be doing the whole thing....my dad is supposed to be building me new kitchen cabinets, but he kept putting it off b/c it was too hot to work on them (he does his woodworking on his back porch).
Sam's off to Orlando....wow! They grow up so soon, huh? I bet it will be strange not to have him there.

has anyone ever heard of the Omnipod?I get it on Tuesday.It is the only wireless pump and I am the first one to get it in my state.

Hi Jade - Yep, the Omnipod is a pretty cool device. The Omnipod folks are going to be at Friends for Life this summer - I'm excited. It'll be their first time having a booth with us. Lots of info to share with parents.

Still very early for La Jolla - about 50 people right now. I'm expecting 300-400. Most register the two months prior to the conference.
i love it espescially cause there is no tubing and i am very athletic, and it wont fall off.
Marco, on the other hand, is double what we thought it would be in attendance. It surprised me! We have an excellent group of people... hoping for excellent weather!
I registered him for the BBall clinic. He started playing in High School this year. They looked at him and made him do it...He cant wait for FFL too.. but is upset with me that we're not doing Marco Island.. Lots of his crew are going and begging him.. I just told him that its too much $$$.
I figured there would be more later...I was just so excited I had to jump on it.
Jade, I think that' s great. My daughter's new pump is supposed to arrive tomorrow; she's going onto a Cozmo.
Jade, are you coming to Orlando this summer for the conference? Maybe you can tell us what you think after wearing the Omnipod for 6 months.
Stacey, remind him that the reason we have lots of different conferences in lots of different places is so that families can pick one that hopefully is close to them or close to somewhere they want to vacation. The intent was never for people to go to each and every one!
Hi from WV. We are coming to Marco. Aaron cannot wait to meet the many friends he made in Chicago at our first CWD conference. Aaron too thinks we should be able to come to all of them now! We are going to come in the summer also.

Hi All - wow, Marco Island...who wouldn't want to go. Everytime I look at it on line, I feel so relaxed!
i would like to go to new york, but my mom says its too cold then.
Kim - the New York weekend is a family vacation weekend. It's not a conference... and we are limited to 25 families. It'll be pretty small (and it's mostly booked up right now).
Kim- where in NY are you?
Oooo, you can get away with singing to your 14 year old? My daughter is 9 and just dies of embarassment if I hum. And I'm really not that bad.

Your mom is right, Jade! New York in Feb can be very cold! Beth, we're expecting about 250 for Marco. I had to double the room block... and we're pushing the limit on how many people can be seated in the ballroom (of course the dinner on the beach is no problem...)
Hi Sam - Aaron played his first hockey game last saturday and scored a goal! He is having a blast with hockey but still fights the highs and lows on the ice. Maybe you can give him some more tips at Marco.

The Education for CWD Foundation www.ecwdf.org offers scholarships to the summer conference. Their materials are online in January or so (and last year, the applications were due in April). I'd encourage anyone to apply - they will be giving out about a dozen I think.

Connie, I think Marco may turn out to be an annual event, right after New Years. We've already booked it for 2008 (January 3-7). If this year goes well, we will probably reserve 2009 as well. It's nice working with the same place repeatedly - they get to know us and to respect the 'diabetes things' we need. The Marco staff have been particularly good about this.
Hmmm, I feel a future Christmas List item coming on...

In Marco, the kids will be hanging out in the morning as a whole group (in teams). Ages will be mixed. In the afternoons, they are on their own (parents responsibility) to do beach stuff. So - with your approval - Aaron and his friends can do all kinds of fun things. The hotel has a phenomenal beach and a great pool. I think some of the teens are planning a pingpong tournament...
could we talk about something else please. i dont celebrate christmas and sometimes get teased about
Giulio - Sicily did not work out for this year, but I am certain that it will work out another time. We had trouble with scheduling - we could only come in August, and August was not a good time for our host families in Sicily.

Stacey - The exchange program is on. The conference/vacation in Sicily that I'd been working on last year needs to be postponed. None of us realized that the prices double in August in Sicily because it is a national vacation time. The logistics didn't work out. The exchange program still looks like a go.

so what is this room all about?
For those of you scratching your heads and saying, "Huh?"... we have been building an educational exchange and conference program - slowly - with a similar group to CWD in Italy. We've been there, they've been to Friends for Life in Orlando... and now we are planning some for the future. Giulio is actually an exchange student from Italy who is in the U.S. all this school year. We will have a group of 6 or 7 teens going to Italy to spend a week or so with Italian families (with kids with type 1) in August as a 'trial exchange.' Baby steps.
Katie - This room is to discuss anything relating to CWD conferences and events. The other rooms are for other diabetes-related conversation.

Hi HDR - Marco will be about 250 people, roughly half kids. The ages are from toddler through older teen - very nicely spread out age-wise. Lots of elementary aged kids! You will have a blast. I'm so glad you are coming to your first conference with us!

Are there siblings coming who do not have type 1?
We've actually had a lot of interest from diabetes groups in other countries wanting to connect with us. The Italian group was the first in 2004, and we have pretty solid plans with them. Their organization is led by Dr. Andrea Scaramuzza in the Milan area - he actually is on CWD's D-Team, so we know him well. I anticipate we will see a lot of international opportunities over the next 5-10 years.
Yes, just under half of the kids are siblings who do not have type 1.
I hope, will be wonderful a huge CWD for all the world...
If you are ever looking for host families in the US, we would certainly consider hosting a type 1 student in our home.
No state, no difference, just friends with the same "problem"

Now here's an idea, Laura - in an effort to make our non D kids feel extra special...perhaps there should be a CNWD (Children NOT With Diabetes) Conference...then they could bring their type 1 siblings

Oh Connie - I'm sorry. You asked that a long time ago, didn't you?
So, lots of behind-the-scenes work going on right now. Working on the athletes for the Sports Central panel. Does anyone remember Jay Hewitt (triathlete)? He spoke a couple of years ago at the Banquet. I am trying to get him back - he was wonderful and so inspirational. Also trying to get Noah (the juggler) back. The kids loved him. Our martial arts folks will be back as well (Marc Blatstein and Fran Ott).
Laura, I don't know how you can get these huge things together...did you do event planning prior to CWD or has this been a learn-as-you-go thing?
That goes without saying, Laura. Each year the event ends and I'm ready for it to start all over again. Although I'm sure you're enjoy a little bit of rest in between! Brooke was really curious to know who the VIPs will be!
It's a full time job, that's for sure! I did have a tiny bit of planning experience prior to working for CWD. I worked in healthcare for 20+ years when Sam was dx'd, and I'd been to and helped with lots of state and national conferences... but pulling together one all by myself? That is a learn-as-you-go deal! That's why I always look so harrassed at the conferences - I'm fixing all the boo-boos!

Marcia, you can plug a regular keyboard into most laptops. May have to install software for it though.
Tell Brooke we'll have the VIPs online as soon as we can! They all have contracts with the companies that sponsor them, and the contracts pretty much run on the calendar year. So, we won't know for sure that these folks are finalized until after January. We do know that Chris Dudley will be with us. And Doug Burns (Mr. America).
Laura, for february you need my registration form (i can download that form from hte CWD site right?)?

Connie - With regard to FFL ending and then starting all over again, we've already been back to Disney to review the space and the program (that was October), and I go back in January to update... and hopefully won't need to do another trip until the actual conference. It is a lot of detail! We finalize the faculty and topics in August, within a month of getting everyone's feedback from July.

Laura- with regard to the teens in the park.. Is there a way to have a bus that leaves the park earlier?? Last summer, there was a large group , according to Jesse, just sitting around for maybe 2 hrs, waiting to leave...
Hmmm....I think I'd rather be the Assistant Assistant than the boss. Unless you want to come teach kindergarten, then I'll try to take over for you...well, maybe not!

Stacey - Nope, we're not going to split up the teens. They need to stay together as a group (and they do not have space at the hotel on Friday - their rooms are being used). If they can't find something fun to do all day at MGM, hmmm. I don't know what to say. They are welcome to sit in the home base area with Natalie and hang out. At least it's air conditioned.
The piggies are doing great we have one with a bad leg...but the other three are doing awesome....
and the pies well we had to feed one to the piggies it became a science experiment...penicillian pumpkin pie
Also, there may be teens who are entirely uninterested in going to the park on Friday. That is fine. If they would like to volunteer with the younger kids or help with some of the volunteer jobs, that is doable. The park day is all or nothing, though. If they go, they go for all day.
Like herding cats, or nailing jello to a tree....
I just don't have travel involved in my particular field..
