Wed Oct 6 1999 21:05:48 Eastern US

Wed Oct 6 1999 21:06:49 Eastern US
Amy from 207.172.75.23
basically running, brisk walks, aerobic stuff. usually i have control, but after a few weeks it's obvious it's an infection and they want to pinpoint the type..keep switching antibiotics and solve that,

Wed Oct 6 1999 21:06:56 Eastern US
Doug Burns from 216.216.9.98
Hello Donna Caitlin,

Wed Oct 6 1999 21:07:54 Eastern US
Jeff Hitchcock from 206.112.197.133
Doug, what advice would you offer to young kids who have diabetes?

Wed Oct 6 1999 21:08:05 Eastern US
Lisa/UTAH (Jace, 3, dx'd 9/28/98) from 207.173.223.76
Do you think that evening excercise has a lingering effect into the night?

Wed Oct 6 1999 21:08:35 Eastern US
Doug Burns from 216.216.9.98
A-Glad to hear you're on top of it.
Donna- Good eating is so very helpful to keeping tight BS levels

Wed Oct 6 1999 21:08:55 Eastern US
Amy from 207.172.75.23
Lisa, in my experience, exercise does/did. On shots if i exercised at say 7 pm, even if it was only a 3 mile walk, i'd see no effect but would crash in the night...

Wed Oct 6 1999 21:09:00 Eastern US
Doug Burns from 216.216.9.98
Hi Lisa- Yes indeed

Wed Oct 6 1999 21:10:06 Eastern US
Amy from 207.172.75.23
Doug, you eat sweets, don't you? I mean you don't believe that a sweet once and a while are not allowed if you have diabetes, do you? i can eat what i want now on the pump, but for the longest time on shots sweets were off limits..by my parents, but diets, etc changed from exchanges to carb counting

Wed Oct 6 1999 21:10:44 Eastern US
Doug Burns from 216.216.9.98
Jeff- As long as they maintain good control of their BS levels they can participate in virtually any tye of sport. Checking with the DR is needed but they can't do it for anyone

Wed Oct 6 1999 21:11:25 Eastern US
Donna Coffey (dcoffey@gte.net) from 63.17.210.166
It seems like my son only wants to eat fats and carbs...he's 14...he doesn't understand yet.

Wed Oct 6 1999 21:11:46 Eastern US
Lisa/UTAH (Jace, 3, dx'd 9/28/98) from 207.173.223.76
Thanks! That explains a lot!

Wed Oct 6 1999 21:12:40 Eastern US
Doug Burns from 216.216.9.98
A- Yes I do est sweets on occasion but am very tight with moderating the insulin/glucose levels.
Before A show I will tighten up & have a sweets day every Sunday or so

Lisa/UTAH (Jace, 3, dx'd 9/28/98) from 207.173.223.76
I think it is difficult with a toddler! I would love his a1c to be lower.

Wed Oct 6 1999 21:16:39 Eastern US
Caitlin (CaitM34@aol.com) from 205.188.198.159
before i was on the pump they were in the 8's- just after 3 minths it mvoed to 6.7

Wed Oct 6 1999 21:16:45 Eastern US
Amy from 207.172.75.23
I don't persay have a goal with a1c, under 7 now that i'm on the pump, but i know my next one will most likely be elevated...darn infection, sorry, but was 300-400 for several days b4 the doc (and 3 appts) figured out what to do...my endo wants 90% of bg between 90-160. ON a good normal pump day i can stay between 80-140

Wed Oct 6 1999 21:17:02 Eastern US
Lisa/UTAH (Jace, 3, dx'd 9/28/98) from 207.173.223.76
Doug~What has been the biggest obstacle for you with your diabetes?

Wed Oct 6 1999 21:17:07 Eastern US
Doug Burns from 216.216.9.98
Brenda-I see a few endos on both business/medical conferences/ personal...probably more frequently now

Wed Oct 6 1999 21:18:58 Eastern US
Brenda H. from 10.0.1.3
Have you ever had other athletes question you about your diabetic supplies, which I assume you always have with you? I have read about people being accused of being junkies when they see syringes.

Wed Oct 6 1999 21:19:10 Eastern US
Doug Burns from 216.216.9.98
A- Later I'll give you my co. email for further correspondence
Lisa- In the begining I was dead set on achieving goals.
Probably the biggest obstacle is making sure I have goals set

Wed Oct 6 1999 21:20:27 Eastern US
Doug Burns from 216.216.9.98
Bren-Sure have..I compete as a drug free athlete so the assumption is always that I'm taking "something"

Wed Oct 6 1999 21:20:52 Eastern US
Brenda H. from 10.0.1.3
Doug, since you were diagnosed at a relatively early age, how did you cope as a teen? As a parent of a pre-teen, I am concerned about potential rebelliousness.

Wed Oct 6 1999 21:20:56 Eastern US
Amy from 207.172.75.23
thanks Doug. How many shots a day do you take? how are your a1c;s?

Wed Oct 6 1999 21:21:25 Eastern US
Spencer from 205.188.193.186
I am diabetic and i am 14 and i am starting to lift weights

Wed Oct 6 1999 21:21:29 Eastern US
Donna Coffey (dcoffey@gte.net) from 63.17.210.166
Does it bother you having to "explain" yourself or your supplies?

Wed Oct 6 1999 21:21:45 Eastern US
Caitlin (CaitM34@aol.com) from 205.188.198.159
amy- do u have any porblems if you are low during school? do u have a school nurse?

Wed Oct 6 1999 21:22:40 Eastern US
Doug Burns from 216.216.9.98
Hey A- My bs a1c are between 5.7-6.3 on most testings.
Since the advent of the tiny syringe I take between 3-6 injections dependent on training eating/etc....

Wed Oct 6 1999 21:23:09 Eastern US
Amy from 207.172.75.23
Caitlin, I have had very few lows in school this year, last year i hit 20 daily, this year I had one 66 and maybe a 50. I have a school nurse, but as it seems lately, whenver I have a problem she is not there..including site changes, etc, which is fine I know how to do them perfectly on my own, but it's a hassle having to find a key to the clinic..she's full time, but doesn't seem to be there all that often..

Wed Oct 6 1999 21:23:56 Eastern US
Doug Burns from 216.216.9.98
Spencer-welcome, glad to here you lifting weights, keep me posted as to how you are doing

Wed Oct 6 1999 21:24:58 Eastern US
Caitlin (CaitM34@aol.com) from 205.188.198.159
yea- i always used to go to the nurse, she is really nice, but this year all my teachers let us eat in class so i usually don't bother

Wed Oct 6 1999 21:25:25 Eastern US
Ruth (harehound@pwshift.com) from 208.153.85.171

Wed Oct 6 1999 21:26:36 Eastern US
Amy from 207.172.75.23
Caitlin, for years i never had to use the clniic then i got very brittle..now ont he pump it's nice, but i dislike having to go to the clinic, i prefer 1. not to have the probs, and 2. deal with them on my own..which most likely isn't possible, b/c my infusion set change supplies are in the clinic and i know a few people who would be grossed out if i inserted a set in the classroom with my shirt pulled up halfway..hehe

Wed Oct 6 1999 21:27:10 Eastern US
me from 206.72.22.144

Wed Oct 6 1999 21:29:03 Eastern US

Hello, Doug. My son is at the age/stage where he likes to pretend he doesn't have diabetes. He's quite athletic...but I know his performance is often compromised by wide bg swings. Any advice?

Wed Oct 6 1999 21:34:33 Eastern US
Amy from 207.172.75.23
Me, it's ok. lately i've been frustrated, but once again it's not the pump's fault. BG have less swings, I can sleep in, eat whatever I want whenever..or skip meals, and have a lot less lows

What do think would be the biggest struggle for him?

When I was young it was not as accepted and research was slow at best.
Frequent lows were common as urine testing was the only method when I first got it but motivation is the key issue and determinant in wining anything

Doug, how old were you when you really recognized motivation and determination.

Doug Burns from 216.216.9.98
Lisa-the biggest struggle would probably be the acceptance issue...but kids with diabetes can turn it to their advantage as most other kids have interest in things like this

Doug Burns from 216.216.9.98
Donna-I made up my mind at the age of 13 that I was going to be the best in something and at 15 I knew that i wanted to set an American record

Doug, given that you were diagnosed before the "modern" testing equipment was developed, have you managed to prevent complications, so far? Your dedication to your sport maybe helping keep your blood sugars in range.

Lisa (Chapman 6) from 205.188.200.53
Doug, my son has had diabetes since just before his 3rd birthday. We just starting encouraging him to play soccer and he is loving it. What we are concerned about for him is the temptation to "cheat" so to speak. At what point do you think this happens with kids?

Wed Oct 6 1999 21:54:11 Eastern US
Doug Burns from 216.216.9.98
Hello Brenda- Thanks and yes believe I have had no complication and I know it was for the most part due to competitive training and the great vascular/aerobic benefits

Doug Burns from 216.216.9.98
Lisa-As long as you are controlling his "cheating" given that he is still young he should be fine. It is the majority of time under control vs minority infractiions that wins the war

We have a good friend who has had diabetes for 23 years. He told us that since Chapman was diagnosed with diabetes at an early age, he will grow up with a much more disciplined life which will help him in school. Do you agree with this?
