Tue Dec 26 2000 21:14:30 Eastern US
Dawn (Nolan,7,pumping) from 204.189.92.233
No, I meant after 3 years of strict schedule. The pump freed us from the clock and the schedule. Took a couple months to break the old schedule habit though.

Tue Dec 26 2000 21:15:11 Eastern US
BettyB (Chat Moderator) from 152.163.204.29
Wendy, I didn't feel like I was trying to avoid the medicines as much as I was just doing what I suggest to my patients -- you use the other tools first and as long as they work well (both in terms of blood sugar xontrol and enjoying life), then there's not a reason to add medicine. But then my pancreas really pooped out and therre was no longer an option.

Tue Dec 26 2000 21:15:15 Eastern US

Mantmom, you'll probably go through the feeling guilty period, the why me/us period, and a whole host of other feelings before things settle down and you accept it. Talking about it helps a great deal.

It does feel terrible that we..they(Meicine people) use words like "lost the battle" because we keep winning when we add new things to do the same old goal...normalizing as much as possible

Tue Dec 26 2000 21:19:59 Eastern US
Dawn (Nolan,7,pumping) from 204.189.92.233
I say evil because it seemed like it was always time to do something related to Diabetes, time for a check, time for a snack, time for insulin, etc....sometimes, no, a lot of times it interfered with just letting him be a kid.

BettyB (Chat Moderator) from 152.163.204.29
mandtom, regarding the insulin patch, there is one in development. it's use will be to provide background insulin (between meals and overnight). People with type 1 will still need meal insulin to handle food, even if the patch does pan out. I know the shots seem like a huge thing. Have you taken one yourself yet to see how they actually feel?

Betty's right, that's the best thing to do, try do everything, do the finger pokes, give a shot to yourself(no insulin of course). It's not as bad as it looks.

I'm not sure, Wendy, but I think I felt easier about insulin because I'd tried to start metformin once before and had unpleasant side effects -- insulin I had no such qualms about -- I give my self saline injections a lot when I'm training professionals - so it's like rolling off a log.

BettyB (Chat Moderator) from 152.163.204.29
Dawn, there are two new meters (Freestyle and At Last) and a previously existing meter from Lifescan with a new strip that allow you to take blood samples fro sites other than the fingers. This is helpful because the top of the arm, for example, has few nerves and so you barely feel the stick, if at all. The Freestyle is particularly nice because the blood sample it requires is TINY. This can take the physical discomfort entirely out of the testing equation.

Difficult but important Judy not to react so emotionally to the individual readings??? We don't want self-esteem to be connected to the numbers? But your insight is good..and hearing yourself say what you did, helpful?

Tue Dec 26 2000 21:48:32 Eastern US
BettyB (Chat Moderator) from 152.163.204.29
Denise, that's shame about your husband - does he maybe see you as the "diabetes queen" in the family?? Do you take the lead in your son's daily care? Is it possible he doesn't realize yours is a burden too - orthat you have strong feelings about??

Tue Dec 26 2000 21:49:15 Eastern US
Susie (T2) from 207.29.207.180
Denise, I find that people think that we 2s just need to watch what we eat/take better care of ourselves and we will be "okay".

Ali is off at camp today - last night I casually mentioned to my mother-in-law that the camp has weekends for grandparents too - so they can learn to help out - it went right over her head.

Dr. Wendy - intellectually, I KNOW that, but emotionally, it's my gut response...I'll keep working at it, though. In some ways, it's a lot easier when she's not at home

Kate (Mom of Jake,9, dx'd 6 mths ago) from 204.233.47.161
I have some problems with your whole life evolving around individual readings - my husband's emotional state is directly tied to my son's BG readings - and it makes me feel insensitive that, that drives me crazy!

Tue Dec 26 2000 21:51:01 Eastern US
Dr. Wendy Rapaport (psychologist, wife of type 2 person with diabetes) from 64.12.105.179
Amy, you make a good point..mentioning casually is a good start..but asking directly later and assuming there will be hesitancy..it is frightening for you to learn and certainly it will be there for them..you"d like to have them think of things themselves..to be helpful...but sometimes we have to be more direct???

Tue Dec 26 2000 21:52:03 Eastern US
Dawn (Nolan,7,pumping) from 204.189.92.233
mantmom, the pump is a tool that only uses short acting insulin, you wear it 24 hrs a day, 7 days a week, you get the insulin through a tube, inserted into your abs, or some other location. It elimates the need for shots and schedules, to a degree.

Tue Dec 26 2000 21:52:05 Eastern US
Dr. Wendy Rapaport (psychologist, wife of type 2 person with diabetes) from 64.12.105.179
Kate, try not to feel "insensitive"..you are probably compensating for his understqandable but hurtful response?

Tue Dec 26 2000 21:52:11 Eastern US
BettyB (Chat Moderator) from 152.163.204.29
If I can add an observation about feeling that everything rides on every number. I know it's hard to make mind command emotion on this one but try to remember two things: (1) perfect control just isn't possible with the tools we have now, and (2) perfect control isn't necessary to protect against complications. Average BG in the DCCT (that produced those amzing reductions in complications) was about 150 mg/sl (7 mmol)

Tue Dec 26 2000 21:55:16 Eastern US
BettyB (Chat Moderator) from 152.163.204.29
Judy - that was a 7% A1c, where 6% was the top end of the normal range -- at about 1% above the normal range is where the incidence of complications starts to take off.

BettyB (Chat Moderator) from 152.163.204.29
Susie, that can be an awfully hard one to accept -- but when you can get to the point where you "roll with the punches," it's my experience that the burden of diabetes gets much lighter -- it's EXHAUSTING to try to control things that are outside your control!

Tue Dec 26 2000 21:58:27 Eastern US
Kate (Mom of Jake,9, dx'd 6 mths ago) from 204.233.47.161
Dr. Wendy- I think what complicates things is my brother-in-law who is my husband's best friend has type 2 & we've been thru some scary insulin reactions with him since our son was dxd - so it makes him especially over protective

Kate that makes sense..and this is all still new..so that will be remembered as your husband's "first" set of responses..it probably is important to understand his friends issues and certainly distinguish to diabetes being different in type 1 and type 2 and certainly different bdetween how people handle their diabetes(sometimes overtreating..sometmes being preoccupied and forgetting to eat...thugh personally I could never forget that...understanding without judgment of course

Tue Dec 26 2000 22:01:31 Eastern US

mandtom, I hope you find that doesn't prove to be true - many grandparents become very skilfull in daily care - at our center and at many others, grandparents, aunts, uncles, baby sitters, neighbors -- all can come and sit in on class or get instruction in the needed skills -- and many do so willingly -- it's really THEIR loss when they don't because they lose so much closeness with child and family around an issue of such importance
