Ellen, it looks wonderful. I think Spinoza needs some tapes on diabetes! Although the general relaxation, self-esteem, and so on tapes look very helpful to virtually any child if they're well done.

Norma Jean, First, I would feel good that your daughter can tell you she hates dm...who doesn't? So ask her how it could be any better, given we(you) can't take it away? This is a good sign that she is able to express negative emotions with you as her Mom, I ususally worry the most about the kids who never say they hate diabetes...

Ellen (FL) (Zachary 13, dx'd 2/89) from 64.12.103.26
Barbara I don't have the bear - just learned about it 5 minutes before entering this chat.

Barbara, I question why every diabetes team doesn't insist the family with a child with diabetes see a psychologist/social worker...with each quarterly visit as part of routine diabetes care. So much attention is focused on "control" as far as blood work, eating etc. with very little about "coping" etc. Do you see with managed care that you are seeing even less patients routinely and only during crisis? ( I know that Joslin requires eval to decide if a patient is a good candidate for a pump. Do you do those screenings and evals?)

Hello...
My kids are older now, but what advice do you have for parents or kids who are concerned about being teased about diabetes? Earlier this evening, an 11y/o girl in the parent chat brought this up. Said when she told a classmate she couldn't eat a particular thing, he told her to "go eat some sugar tablets". She was offended.

Tue Apr 17 2001 21:21:23 Eastern US
Barbara Anderson, guest host (pediatric psychologist in diabetes x 22 yrs.) from 205.188.198.46
Judith, kids with dm have always been teased, so this sounds very normal and yet especially cruel.
My feeling is that youngsters who are teased at school need the support and intervention of teachers (and parents to tell teachers of the problem)....teasing is such a normal part of child development, yet with dm , it hurts so much. I hope you can connect with your child's teacher about this?

Tue Apr 17 2001 21:22:11 Eastern US
María (Mom of Andrés, 6 dx´d at4) from 200.44.4.216
I get together with the teachers at the start of the school year and tell them what Andrés says when he feells low, also I have in shool a special box with juices, sugar and things Andrés like to have when he is low, also I teach them about glucagon.

Tue Apr 17 2001 21:23:12 Eastern US
Ellen (FL) (Zachary 13, dx'd 2/89) from 64.12.103.26
Last week at a wonderful pump support group meeting with kids facilitated by Wendy Satin-Rapaport, we watched the kids do quite a bit of role playing with just those kinds of scenarios and the kids were fabulous in expressing their feelings, and really enjoyed learning and planning retorts to mean remarks. I think preparing kids and rehearsing those situations ahead of time is a suvival skill that is often overlooked.

Over the years Barbara, I think it's important to be brief but to the point. I usually try to get their attention by holding up Zach's pump and saying "this is Zach's $6,000.00 life sustaining device which he wears 24/7. Most of the time everything works fine, but in fairness to you his teachers, the people who are responsible for him while he's in your classroom, I must explain the worst case scenario so you will feel empowered and informed." Then I show the teachers the infusion set and the insertion needle. I usually have their attention....explain hypo and hyperglycemia, give them a small sheet explaining his different symptoms they may notice....

NormaJean (Samantha, 7, dx'd 12/99, Pumping 2/01) from 205.188.200.200
I agree w/ Melanie. Also get to know the clinic assistant/nurse well and talk to them. I made sure they feel free to call me anytime for any reason. Also told them to never think twice about calling 9-1-1 if they felt the situation might become more than they could handle.

Melanie (Katie 9 Dxd 6/00 Jessica 11 Dxd 3/01) from 216.0.151.146
I worry about Jessica because she doesn't tell me anything, I practically drag everything out of her. But I have a feeling something is going on at school that I don't know about, she always seems sad.

Tue Apr 17 2001 21:25:36 Eastern US
Barbara Anderson, guest host (pediatric psychologist in diabetes x 22 yrs.) from 205.188.198.46
Melanie, hypoglycemia treatment depends on the age of your child. How old is your kid. For kids in grades 1-3 they need support in treating hypoglycemia with some form of quick-acting sugar in the classroom (like glucose tablets, lifesavers, juice)....What is also important in the classroom is that the child not be singled out!

Judith (David, 15, dx'd at age 2 months; Vanya, 16, dx'd at 6) from 63.162.254.161
I prepared (with the help of info at this site) a2 page info sheet on d in general, Dave in particular, and included his picture. Copies went to each teacher, school nurse, secretaries, lunch room personnel, (bus driver), etc. The handout gave a very brief explanation of d, stressing that lows were an emergency situation that might require assistance. Did not mention highs except to say that he needed free access to water and bathrooms.

Judith (David, 15, dx'd at age 2 months; Vanya, 16, dx'd at 6) from 63.162.254.161
Her husband has type 2, so the food issues were familiar to her. She was very good about substituting fresh fruit for canned in heavy syrup, Teddy Grahams for sugary desserts, etc. Sometimes he needed more food than the meal provided. The school gave whatever he needed, at no extra charge. (This is legally required, I understand)

Had some bad experiences with a particular teacher and principal, over a period of months. Eventually went to the ass't superintendent. I was assertive, and prevailed. Since that time, school personnel have been very cooperative. Did do a 504 that year, but never before or since

BettyB (Feelings Matter Chat Moderator) from 152.163.213.214

Barbara Anderson, guest host (pediatric psychologist in diabetes x 22 yrs.) from 205.188.198.46
Maria, I suggest you check out the school site on this chidlrenwithdiabeteswebsite. It has the most current and up to date legal information for parents of kids with dm... In my experience the best move it to speak person-to-person with your child's teacher and to understand their own views.....

Ellen (FL) (Zachary 13, dx'd 2/89) from 64.12.103.26
The school has accomodated all of our requests for allowing Z to manage his own diabetes - but I would like it documented that if his bg is low, he shouldn't have to take a test. I've never told him this however, because I don't want him to use it as an excuse per se....very difficult to balance the reality of life with diabetes with being a child in middle school.

Judith (David, 15, dx'd at age 2 months; Vanya, 16, dx'd at 6) from 63.162.254.161
One bit of advice: Be VERY wary of anyone who says "Oh, I know all about diabetes"! In most cases, they "know" their old granny's diabetes, or that of their great uncle - nearly always type 2 in an adult, which is vastly different that type 1 in a growing child.

Barbara Anderson, guest host (pediatric psychologist in diabetes x 22 yrs.) from 205.188.198.46
For all of you parents, in my expeience, the major problem parents can make in educating school staff is to say too much. The key is to say only the important issues relating to the safely of your child: prevention and treatment of hypoglycemia, emergency numbers to call, and frequent access to the bathroom during periods of high blood sugars.

Judith (David, 15, dx'd at age 2 months; Vanya, 16, dx'd at 6) from 63.162.254.161
Much easier to work with someone who is not knowledgeable, but is willing to learn. Even a teacher who has had other kids with d does not know YOUR child, and your treatment regimen. Things change.

Judith (David, 15, dx'd at age 2 months; Vanya, 16, dx'd at 6) from 63.162.254.161
I agree, Barbara. Most teachers have neither the time nor inclination to read more than a page or 2 about diabetes.

Barbara Anderson, guest host (pediatric psychologist in diabetes x 22 yrs.) from 205.188.198.46
Ellen, you are addressing the fragile issue of honesty and reality and school requirements. If your child can let the teacher know that his/her blood sugar is low then, a 504 plan will help the issue of taking the exam again.... So I would definitely include this as part of your child's care plan!

María (Mom of Andrés, 6 dx´d at4) from 200.44.4.216
It is very different, class bigger, lots of teachers, and no nurses or medical team ( in Venezuela almost any school has them). I plan to go before school starts and talk to the teachers . Andrés best friend is also going to this school, I just think if these new teachers would not see how important is to treat a low on time and that they might think I am overprotective.

BettyB (Feelings Matter Chat Moderator) from 152.163.213.214
Maria, your concerns make perfect sense. Is there perhps a nurse from your doctor's office who could go with you and help you make the "case" of the seriousness (but not grimness!) of diabetes to all these new people? Judith has also given some very good ideas tonight about what information to include.

Maria, I suggest getting the materials from this website or the ADA ("diabetes.org"? Is there an active organization for diabetes and kids in Venzuela?

Judith (David, 15, dx'd at age 2 months; Vanya, 16, dx'd at 6) from 63.162.254.161
Incidence of type 1 is rather low in Venezuela, isn't it? So not likely there will be other kids there with diabetes, or that teachers will have had much experience. You can start them off right, with good information.
