Hi Amy - The trip was a lot of fun, but there was definitely an air of concern as they were cleaning up from Charley (still) and preparing for Ivan, which didn't end up hitting Orlando.

Anyway, the Orlando airport was pretty beat up. And there were so many trees down around the area, but the Disney property was well picked-up. I can't imagine what our FL friends are going through now... storm after storm after storm.

Yes, you may make room reservations now. The phone number is 407-939-1020. Make sure you tell them you're with the CWD conference. My family is staying from 7/2-7/10. We want to check out July 4th there (however, Elaine, I think you may have talked me out of going INTO a park on the holiday).

Registered User Catherine Mom of Alyssia 11 yrs dx'd @9  (208.61.153.67) Thu Sep 23 08:56:39 PM EDT 2004

Ugh - Jeanne. Very scary. All of these storms have such erratic paths - I can't believe Ivan is back in New Orleans.

well if you like lots of hot bodies and no where to walk, then Magic Kingdom IS THE place to be on the 4th - lol!!

I'd planned another FL trip next week, but decided to postpone it. Next time I'm down, if anyone 'local' wants to get together for lunch or dinner, I'd love the company!

You can't really see any of the fireworks from Coronado Springs (you can certainly hear them) - but honestly, I've seen enough fireworks in my 40 something years that I'm ok on July 4th sitting by the pool, tall iced tea in hand, chatting with some other CWD moms and dads!

Bernadette has a very significant - NEW - role in this year's conference. She is going to be the Hospitality Coordinator for all the new families. That means that prior to the conference, she will be matching up each 'new family' with an 'old family' who has been to a CWD summer conference before. That way, you'll have a friend coming into the conference, someone who can explain the flow of things, help you get started, etc.

Yes, there will be opportunities to get together with moms and dads of kids the same ages. Also, you might consider visiting the park together on Saturday 'by age group.' We'll be having the Magical Memories Breakfast (with the princes and princesses) first thing on Saturday, then everyone will head off to Magic Kingdom (or Epcot). It would be a reasonable move to 'do MK' with other families who have kids the same age as yours.

One thing we are doing that is VERY different from other years. The teens are not going to have sit-down sessions. They will have one ice-breaker on Thursday morning - to meet each other, learn the ground rules, etc... and then they are off and running. Literally. We will have an indoor gym with basketball, volleyball, and some other sports. We'll have pool time. We'll have beach volleyball. And in between all the sports - we'll have staff teaching diabetes management. What better way to learn than by doing? The kids and Tweeners will be similar, but they will have more structured sit-down time and will go back to their meeting space every hour.

Kathryn, 14, bonded with a bunch of kids in L.A. and DC. She's invited about 7 of them to come visit for Thanksgiving. Unfortunately, most have to stay with their families, so she may re-schedule over Christmas break. She stayed to herself the first few Conferences, but has become one of the younger "gang" of teens.

Chris - That's great! One thing I'd like all of us to do is to teach our kids that if they see another kid sitting by him or herself, that they should go up, say hi, and invite them to come along to whatever it is they are doing. I heard a little bit of feedback from last summer that a few kids felt left out. I wish I'd known at the time - I don't want that to happen to ANYone at all this year.

Childcare is provided for children ages 6 and under (even babies) for full days only, on Thursday and Friday. You have to pre-register for that, and I'll have the forms online. We have about 125 spots available. Disney childcare is superb, as you might imagine. And Animas Corporation is kind enough once again to offer their CDEs as diabetes management support in childcare (they take bgs according to your instructions, etc.). You pick up your child at lunch; we have a 90 minute break and lunch is provided both days.

One thing I don't like about the Coronado is its distance from other restaurants. Since we are there about a week, I get burned out on the food there. We did have a great meal at the Rainforest Cafe in Downtown Disney with Julia and others a couple of yrs ago!

The kids sessions are for ALL kids - not just those with diabetes. And most of our sessions this summer will be activity-based. The kids will be spending time with us in the pool, on the playground, in the indoor (air conditioned) gym, etc., The teens will be going to a water park on Friday.

Good point, Brenda. If you're there for a week, you'll get tired of food. This year, all the rooms at the Coronado will have refrigerators... so you can bring snacks, juice, milk, etc., and not have to rely on food court offerings. For those of you considering renting a vehicle while you're there, you don't need to (Disney bus transportation is quite good), however if you want to go out to restaurants and have the flexibility to come and go on your own timing, a car is better. I think we'll get one this year.

We have a 10 yr. old son, non-D, who doesn't really participate in the sessions. We often let him stay in the room (checking on him often) playing Game Boy or watching movies. He often hangs out with other kids, both D and non-D. They try to go swimming, too, but I don't want them going off to the pool (it's often pretty far) unsupervised. There is an arcade/game room in the hotel and we let Tim go there with a friend. I learned to take a roll of quarters. Smile

Someone asked a few minutes ago about a potential meeting time. Every evening prior to the conference is 'meeting time' - by the pool. The pool is on an island. There's a kiddie pool area, a hot tub, a 'real' pool with a slide, a playground, and a sand volleyball court. Oh, and snacks and a bar. All on an island. We go there at night before the conference to hang out, relax, and meet people. If you've been to a prior CWD conference, wear your t-shirt so others will recognize you as Family.

Focus Groups won't be planned until a couple months before the conference. I send out an invitation to our partnering companies to see if they want to do one, and they get back to me. So, no idea yet who will be involved or at what time. But for sure, we will have Focus Groups all day. For those who don't know what a Focus Group is, it's a discussion group - usually about one product or product group - involving about 20-30 people. It's led by a company, and they are interested in your feedback, good or bad, about their products. We do this all day Weds.

The weather in July? Absolutely beastly hot. Thank goodness for AC and the pool. And my best recommendation on Saturday (park day)? Go early, come back to the hotel for lunch and a swim, and go back around dinner time when it cools off a bit. Yes, Jesse, of COURSE Natalie B is coming. In fact, she is in charge of All Things Teen. She'll be leading the group to the water park on Friday, etc. Now go to bed.

Registered User Laura Billetdeaux CWD Events  (66.82.9.67) Thu Sep 23 09:46:27 PM EDT 2004
The Guest Assistance Cards are given one per family. They allow you to have some special accommodations on really hot crowded days such as waiting in an air conditioned or shaded area, or coming back at a later time (similar to the fast pass) to get in right away. Sometimes they just allow you to come right in anyway (although not usually). I have found it easier to just use the Fast Pass system at the park and not bother with Guest Assistance Cards. However, if you have little ones who are very susceptible to getting sick in the heat, you definitely need a GAC.

Registered User Laura Billetdeaux CWD Events  (66.82.9.67) Thu Sep 23 09:47:34 PM EDT 2004
The Guest Assistance Cards will be available Weds late afternoon and early evening at registration. After that, you can get them at any Guest Relations office in the park.

For anyone wanting to have a discussion how to use the Guest Assistance Card, we should do that right at the conference (that way, I can get the latest from Marvin and prepare him for about how many from our group will be using them). One year, when Sam was younger and it was really hot (and not raining!), I recall that we used it a lot. But I really haven't since then.

Re: the room block - NO we're not all in one building! There's WAY too many of us! (probably 1,500-1,800 people in our group) The Coronado Springs Resort is very spread out around a lake. When you reserve as part of our group, they will try to keep you as close as possible to the Convention Center. They understand the challenges of trying to get little ones to the Convention Center for breakfast at 8... and being on the far side of the lake. It just doesn't work!

Keith is the best babysitter. He is in high demand around here. He might not be at the conference. He is supposed to go to Israel for his confirmation trip.

Oh, I thought the dogs woke you up and then you checked Marissa. How is the new puppy working out?

Registered User Brenda H. mom of Marissa, 17, dx'd 1989  (216.68.227.252) Thu Sep 23 10:16:50 PM EDT 2004
She's ok, when the two aren't snarling and growling, as they play. She slept thru the night a couple of nights, but Daisy got up at 1:50 (may have heard me) and woke up Zoe. I think one of the kids is having Zoe sleep with them tonight. She did very well sleeping in our "mud room." Might have whimpered 15 sec., then just curled up and snoozed for 8 hrs.

Wow, that's great. I wish I could curl up and snooze for 8 hours. In fact, that sounds good. I'm heading to bed. Talk to you tomorrow!
