laura, out of curiosity, are the kids' chat rooms monitored by adults?

Registered User Billetdeaux CWD Events  (66.82.9.71) Thu Dec 02 09:02:22 PM EST 2004
Good evening (formally)! Welcome to the Friends for Life chat. My name is Laura Billetdeaux, and I am the Events Coordinator for Children with Diabetes... I also have two kiddos (Sam, 14, dx'd 8/98; and Carolyn, 17) who love coming to the conferences.
Does anyone have any questions right off the bat?

Registered User Billetdeaux CWD Events  (66.82.9.71) Thu Dec 02 09:03:27 PM EST 2004
The chat rooms are watched over, but not monitored every moment. We occasionally have to clear them and start over; and in rare instances on any list, if someone is being abusive, Jeff bans them from participating.

Hi, can you give an approximate cost for the conference besides air fare?

Registered User Sandra in FL Mom to William, 11, dx'd 3-9-03  (24.129.24.18) Thu Dec 02 09:04:33 PM EST 2004

The parents who chat here check them quite frequently also and let one of the monitors know if there is anything bad going on.

Hi Wendy

Registered User Billetdeaux CWD Events  (66.82.9.71) Thu Dec 02 09:06:45 PM EST 2004
Hi Beth - The costs for the conference are online on the conference web page: http://www.childrenwithdiabetes.com/activities/orlando2005/ Scroll to the bottom of the page and click on registration. The cost really varies according to what you choose to do. The base price for the conference-only is $275 per family. That doesn't include travel or hotel. That's the price before April 1 (i.e. early registration). Other things are extra, for example, Disney tickets, banquet tickets, character breakfast.

Registered User Beth (IA) Rea 19, dx'd 7/98, Lantus and Novolog  (206.72.28.111) Thu Dec 02 09:07:31 PM EST 2004
ok Thanks Laura

Registered User Billetdeaux CWD Events  (66.82.9.71) Thu Dec 02 09:08:11 PM EST 2004
I want to make sure that everyone knows that there is a LOT of detail on the conference web page. For some reason, people don't go all the way to the bottom of the page where the links are - you can link to the sessions, the schedule, faculty, registration, childcare... (I know, put the links at the top...) Rolling Eyes

What it doesn't talk about is all the fun, friendships, tears, and rain that come with the Conference.

Registered User Beth (IA) Rea 19, dx'd 7/98, Lantus and Novolog  (206.72.28.111) Thu Dec 02 09:09:13 PM EST 2004

laura, did you see on the OT list we got some familiar chirstmas carols and one Hanneka (sp?) song rewritten with a diabetes twist. i was thinking, what if we got some more done and have the kids at the conference sing them and then use the tapes as a fundraiser for CWD ???

Registered User Billetdeaux CWD Events  (66.82.9.71) Thu Dec 02 09:09:22 PM EST 2004
Hey Brenda - Good timing! I was just about to remind everyone that this year the hotel has refrigerators in everyone's room... Grin

Registered User Billetdeaux CWD Events  (66.82.9.71) Thu Dec 02 09:11:39 PM EST 2004
I'd be happy to talk with you about that, Sandra. It would be hard to coordinate at the conference with all the kids (we'll probably have 700 or so going at least 6 different directions at all times). Sounds like a fun idea, though. Let's discuss privately.

Registered User Brenda H. mom of Marissa, 17, dx'd 9/89  (216.68.227.252) Thu Dec 02 09:11:44 PM EST 2004
Ok, I'll repeat the story for newcomers. In 2001, I think, I put some insulin in the room fridge. Went to use it on day 4 and it was frozen solid. (Ellen U. had done the same). Lesson, it's ok to use the fridge, but check it's setting first. Rolling Eyes

Registered User Billetdeaux CWD Events  (66.82.9.71) Thu Dec 02 09:13:04 PM EST 2004
Ok... there are 14 people on this chat, and I'm talking to myself here. Doesn't anyone have anything on their mind? What are you most excited about with this conference? Or scared about? Or worried about and not sure you're coming?

Registered User Wendy type 1/pumper  (69.34.165.104) Thu Dec 02 09:13:22 PM EST 2004

If anyone is thinking of flying, watch the airfares now. I'm keeping an eye on the flights from Michigan, and I've seen them anywhere between $200 and $400 per person. Next time they are down near $200, I'm grabbing the tickets!

I wish our kids were in bed. Timothy's playing a video game (I have to stop him asap); Kathryn is watching t.v. and Marissa is not back from her Thurs. babysitting job (every Thurs. she watches a 10 yr. old and her 6 yr. old pumper sister!).

Registered User Billetdeaux CWD Events  (66.82.9.71) Thu Dec 02 09:17:05 PM EST 2004
Hey Julia!
Reminder that it's ok to come as a single adult, too. There were a handful of folks last year who did this and had a blast. For whatever reason (camp, vacation) the kids couldn't come, so Mom/Dad came by themselves, attended sessions, relaxed, and enjoyed the company! The price for a single person is $150 for registration.

That will be my biggest expense--it is so much more expensive to fly out of a smaller airport.

Registered User Wendy type 1/pumper  (69.34.165.104) Thu Dec 02 09:17:34 PM EST 2004

Hi Meghan

The teens are going to have a blast. In a nutshell, they have an ice breaker Thursday morning, followed by a day in the Sports Central area (and the pool, weather permitting) with some discussion about bg management as the day progresses. The banquet and a dance that night. On Friday, they will have a session with Crystal Jackson and Miss America Nicole Johnson Baker about learning how to be an advocate. After the snack break, they will board the busses to one of Disney's water parks for the day. If they don't care to do that, we can use help with the younger kids in Sports Central, and we can also provide other forums for discussion and learning. It will depend who/how many are left - we'll play it by ear. I'm hoping the whole group gels and wants to go together.

So, I have to ask.
Julia, I know this will break your heart, but Hamish isn't coming this year. A number of reasons, but I'm sure we'll have Brother back for future conferences. We love them.  Smile  Anyway, my question is... on Thursday night after the Banquet, would you adults like to have a DJ for a dance? We'd stay right in the banquet ballroom, and the younger kids could stay with us. The teens and Tweeners have their own social events in different rooms. The alternative is we leave the space and go hang at the pool (yukky if raining, nice if not) Your thoughts?

I kind of like the idea of staying in the ballroom, close to where the kids are having their social events. If they need us for some reason, they don't have to walk all the way out to the pool, which is a pretty good hike if you're not feeling well or just have a quick question.

A quick note about alcohol at the conference... CWD doesn't serve it (insurance regulations). However, you are welcome to bring your own to your room, and certainly to purchase any type of beverage at the pool bar or restaurants. There are sodas available everywhere; iced tea as well. Cappuccino and other coffees are available (and pretty decent) in the food court. You'll have a coffee maker in your room.

Nope. Zippora won't be there this year, either. We have a different group of people - but not a focus on the artists and athletes like the last two years. LifeScan (who has sponsored those folks in the past) is sponsoring a group of 50 Italian youngsters (and some parents) to join us instead of spending money on entertainment. I supported that change. I think the knowledge and cultural exchange is tremendously important.

I think the change will be good too. I just hope some of the Italian parents and teens will maybe have some younger siblings with them...I would love for Hannah and Ethan to met them

Registered User Meghan t1 since 1984  (69.95.103.37) Thu Dec 02 09:47:39 PM EST 2004
it is very important...i think it helps the kids to see other cultures deal with this disease as well as us...growing up, i had the whole "I'm the only one!" syndrome, and then when I met a friend who had it too, we thought that we were the only ones, and that no one else had ever heard of diabetes, much less lived with it...

I think everyone will love this Italian group. I'm working with the IDYA teens to make a phrase dictionary specific to the conference - asking them to think up several hundred words/phrases they use a lot at the conferences, and then we'll have them translated to both languages...

Seriously - people who are registered chat users have the star. Go to the main page of the chat area and sign up - then you, too, will have a star.

Yes, Julia - we'll make sure there are a few phrase books at registration for you. Actually, I think we should have them available to anyone who wants them! The teens will each get one, as will each of the Italian families (they are coming early to 'acclimate').

Beth - since you're talking about age, we are having grandparents groups again this year! I have a very dedicated group of grandmas who have been emailing me pretty consistently to make sure I don't forget about scheduling their discussion groups! Betty Brackenridge and Richard Rubin (two incredible facilitators) will be meeting with them!

Renee - I took a group of the IDYA teens and some parents to Italy last year at the invitation of one of CWD's D Team endocrinologists (who lives in Italy). It was such a great experience - we learned so much on so many different levels. Their management was so different from ours (we were all pumpers, none of them pumped) and yet their A1c's were the same on the average. We also tested a lot more than the group of kids we visited. I'm very excited to have them experience our culture this summer! (although - hmmmm - Disney is kind of its own culture).

Numbers are always going to be up and down; that's just the nature of diabetes - especially in a growing child. But 516 is pretty high! You need to have some advice re: treating that number tonight.

You do need to test her ketones any time her blood sugar is over 300 or so, or any time she vomits.
