LAURA, "Happy New Year" Now that the holidays are over I will get on top of hotel and room reservations. I am planning to fly out on the 2nd if I can still get F.F. seats. Is that when you need me? And yes we have 5 feet of snow in the yard and another several feet on the way this weekend.

I was so happy when Will Cross was definitely able to commit to our dates. He had some other climbing and adventure things he was planning, and we had to make sure the conference dates would work before we could let people know. Will is also going to spend time talking with the kids (aside from the keynote opening session for everyone).

Lauren, I don't know if I will be up for as much volunteering with the kids this year....my kindergarteners are really keeping me on my toes to say the least....
Yes, probably 100+ kids age 5 and under. This age group goes to childcare. Childcare is excellent... it is provided by Kids Nite Out (the childcare organization that works with Disney) and this will be the 3rd time we've worked with them. CDEs from Animas will provide the diabetes care in childcare. Do you have specific questions about childcare?

Re: celiac, there are at least a couple dozen people who need a gluten-free diet. We provide it; Disney is wonderful in assisting with whatever we need.

For those who have never been to the conferences, you are in for the most amazing fun time...beyond your imagination. I don't know how Laura/Lauren/Jeff do it, but every year the conference is even more incredible than the prior year.

everyone pumped (no pun intended) for Orlando?
The kids are all together in childcare. They do divide activities by ages, but since everyone is in one big room, if siblings wish to stay together, it's perfectly fine. You may come visit anytime, and in fact, you HAVE to come at snack time to bring food, and you need to pick up the kids for the buffet lunch from noon to 1:30. Also, anytime a child needs a parent, we come find you. You'll be completing a questionnaire telling us where you will be at what times, so that if we need you, we know where you are.
Laura ...... the website says that the hotel is 50% booked.... do you ever fill up to the max? What i am asking is should i get a hotel room now or do I have some time?

Seeing Brenda here reminds me to remind all of you to be careful of the temperature you set for the refrigerator in your room. One year several of us FROZE our children's insulin.
Brenda, we actually took in a round of putt-putt at Disney back in November..it was a lot of fun.

I do recommend tat staying at the hotel will enhance your conference. You learn as much away from classes as you do in them...
We do fill up. However, the hotel has way more rooms than are in our room block. For example, in 2003 we were at the Coronado and had 1200 room nights reserved. We actually ended up booking over 1500, and they did have room for us. Can't guarantee it, though. All they can guarantee is the room nights that are on the contract. So, to be smart, keep an eye on that percentage number and when it gets pretty high, make sure you have a room.

Gym time - YES - every age group (except childcare, as they have their own equipment right in their space) will have gym time. And pool time. Parent volunteers needed please!!!

Fun Run is Thursday morning at 7:30 - a once around the lake. Sponsored by Novo Nordisk once again, it is a benefit for the CWD Foundation. Followed by a wonderful breakfast, and then Will Cross' opening session!

Just to let everyone know..I spoke to someone at Disney a week or two ago and they said I could book my hotel now and and pay a little bit each month to make it seem like less of a shock when I get there....just a thought

Reminder - For those of you who are volunteering, we are having a volunteer reception on Tuesday night. You'll need to look on the program in the conference center for exactly where it will be (we have an outdoor patio if the weather cooperates, otherwise it's indoors). We'll have snacks and beverages, and you can pick up your assignment and your t-shirt, and ask any questions you have at that time. Tuesday night... then you can go play in the pool.

I am starting a support group this month and one of the projects we will be working on is a quilt for each of the kids to send to CWD. There should be 8-10 more quilts by the end of the year or I might try to move the date up and bring them up to Orlando with me.

Childcare is totally play-based. Totally. They do all kinds of things from games, to climbing, to arts-n-crafts, stories, movies, dress-up... very, very creative. After all, it's Disney, right? Also, Nicole Johnson, Miss America 1999 will no doubt be by with her crown to let the girls (or boys) try it on and have pictures taken with her. Will Cross and Michael Hunter (pilot) will probably also stop by and meet the younger kids.

The kids are all doing the same things, but at different times. We have Sports Central, which is a gym sponsored by Novo Nordisk with basketball, volleyball, martial arts, dodgeball, and relay races (plus games and other stuff)... we have pool time, we have arts-n-crafts, some diabetes-related games, outdoor sand volleyball, and something new this year - a Scavenger Hunt in the Exhibit Hall that will last all of 3 days. More to come on that.
Niether one of my kids go there but hey if ya ever come down to visit....look me up

Brenda, Can I still buy a precut square for the quilt?
The Fun Run is a once-around the lake (about 3/4 mile). All the kids do it, dragging parents who are sloshing coffee all over the place. Some of the kids raise donations for the CWDF, many don't - it's really a wake-up and get moving and have fun way to start Thursday morning. Most everyone is out there.

Erin - You can help the kids! We need lots of adult helpers with this, too. The Scavenger hunt is entirely in the Exhibit Hall when the adults are in session (sort of slow time in the Hall anyway at those times, so a great way for the kids to poke around more and find what they need)...
Oh, Erin. You might be able to twist Lauren's arm (she makes the name badges).
Marissa wants a new square by July. She talked Jeff's mom into buying her the fabric (last Aug.), but it's hers to do. I did the first and I'm not that proud of it. She has to do the next one.

Seriously, the early registration rate of $275 for families is very reasonable. If we didn't have the sponsorship that the corporations provide for us, the registration per family would be over $1000. We provide a lot of education, food, social activities, childcare... and don't forget the shirts!
Sounds good to me if I can use fabric markers. The square isn't that hard for me, but the rest of it is. I am big into iron on pictures and easy things like that

Also - just a reminder - for those of you who were asking about whether you can wait to reserve a room until much later... I wouldn't wait too long. Remember that this is the 4th of July holiday week. Many families will be at Disney. It will be different than other years when we've gone later in July.

I tried to book my room through the regular reservation number today, and they said they where sold out on July 8th. Then I relized I called the wrong number..
The age levels allow for some elbow room.
Childcare is ages 6 and under.
Elementary is ages 6-9 (so 6 year old kiddos can go to childcare or the elementary track - but they have to pick one; can't do both)
Tweeners - 10-13, however 'old 13's' may join the teens.
Teens - 13-17.
I would be happy to make a panel for the teen group and other kids as well.
Lauren/Natalie, let us know if you want a blank square.
How about 'guess the carbs' game for the kids? Like a big container of pretzels, goldfish, etc. I'd be willing to donate a gift card (for Toys R Us, some place like that) for a prize
Ah - very important, then, to reserve in the room block. If they are sold out in regular rooms, that's it. We have what we have. If you aren't in the room block... you'll be somewhere else. That's good to know.
Connie- Mike Schurig and the children's staff are planning something like that - great minds think alike!
Gee, Laura, it's amazing that Timothy is now a "tweener." I remember sitting with him at the first two conferences (2000 and 2001) while he dozed! He'll be 11 in May. Time flies.

I was just thinking about that as you were typing. I need to dig out the ole email and send it.
I know this isn't related to the Conference, but I was ransacking the house earlier to find a protractor for Timothy and found a little note I'd written to myself: "11/20/96 11:25 p.m. blood sugar 43. I asked Marisa: When's your birthday? 'August 31, 1987 with a pickle on top. I was born with freckles.'" Even she chuckled when I showed it to her. I still keep an old-fashioned log of her blood sugars (well, most of them) and always write down the cute or bizarre things she says when I'm testing her. She once spoke in Spanish!

Karonay, we have a tweener program that he will love! The boys are reluctant at first, but then they meet Rick.
Focus Groups - Ugh, I'm not even there yet. Probably next month. I know most of the companies who want to hold them, but I haven't worked out the space yet. We just did a lot of switching around with the Convention space. Disney opened a brand new Convention Center - adjacent to the one we were in 2003. I requested some of the new space, and got it (yay!)... but it required some major shifting around of sessions and exhibits and meals and social events... all right at Christmas break. So, I'm just coming up for air. Sorry it seems a bit behind.

Karon, for the first two years, our daughter Kathryn, non-D, complained about our vacations always being about diabetes. So, for a couple of years, we let her bring a friend along. Now, her friend is "dating" Laura's son, Sam, and Kathryn doesn't like to miss any Conference activity.
Ya i know Pam he did that to me at a diabetes camp weekend.... crying the whole way there and then he disappeared for 2 days

Let him moan and groan, and make him come anyway. He will have an absolute ball. Most kids moan and groan until about 5 minutes after they get there and meet the other kids. This is NOT an event where the kids sit for days at a table listening to boring speakers drone on about diabetes... geez, that makes me sleepy even saying it...
Taylor was non-D when we went to diabetes camp , these words still haunt me, she said " i want to have diabetes so that i can go to camp"

Marissa still has a bag of "test" flavors for glucose tabs left from a focus group. She prefers the watermelon flavored tablets and was not fond of many of the new choices.

How mwny steps do the kids walk/run a day??? I did 32,000 in Orlando last time...The kids were running laps around me. They LOVE IT. Its like camp and vacation and so many things, but better...
We all loved camp and this is even better. Keith is really bummed that he isn't going this year. He really enjoys all the people there. They really bond very quickly. Sarah just loves being with everyone and knowing that everyone understands how she feels. It is great for them to be out of our sight and know that they are ok.

no Erin my kids and I went to the Family weekend in lake worth last year.... I am hoping that i can get them to the Deland camp this year....... We can't do a DVD or CD of the slide show with the music because the music is copyrighted. It's fine for me to play it and show it along with the photos I've chosen from the last year, but to produce it on one disk and give it to people (or worse, sell it) is illegal. The photos may be online - but without the music. A few people requested that, and it's ok because the photos belong to CWD.

They both had Italy photos. Mine had the songs You'll Be In My Heart and In My Daughter's Eyes, and You've Got a Friend in Me... I have Lauren's on my computer and I play it whenever I get depressed or tired. Very moving. It makes me cry every time.

I am working on the walking. three years ago I was walking 5 miles a day. It whittled down slowly to almost nothing post dx. I just couldn't get up at night to check and get up in the morning before work to walk. Right now I am at 2 miles a day. I just need to stop eating.

Tom was on a roll at Universal winning stuffed "things" for the kids. I came home with the donkey from Shrek and the princess...he also won lots of sponge Bobs. These things were HUGE
WE are still going through the glucose tabs that we got last summer. The vendor kept handing me package after package. It was ok because we had the car, but the airplane is a different story. Shipping it home is a good idea. That is what we did with the didges.

Kids in sessions are responsible for their own testing. You are responsible for your kids. So make sure they have their kits with them, and make sure they know where you are, and where you are going to meet them after the session. We ALWAYS have glucose in the kids' session, and we have juice, water, and other beverages at all times in the exhibit hall. Snack breaks or meals are between every session.

I always feel bad when I find out that I missed meeting someone at a conference. Well, if you're in FL, I will try to meet you. I spend much of the time reading the name tags, trying to place names.

Brenda I will be the short one that you ask if I need to get with the GROUP of teens.
There will also be Low Stations in the Sports Central area and there will be glucose tabs at the main pool. The lifeguards know we will be there - in fact, all the staff knows our group will be there and Lauren and I have already started meeting with them and teaching/reminding them about what our families need to make things work smoothly. Disney is great in working with us.

Re: the cruise, we also don't have a lot of support from our corporate sponsors, and it's very hard to bring faculty and staff if we don't have corporate support. They are much more supportive of the conferences.

and Laura, I just attended a large cruise conference in December, the cruiselines say they're 110% booked most the time so they don't feel they have to do as much - that's wht I was hearing
I still see 27 people on my computer... so there's lot of us left. At the high point, we had 33 people on the chat, which is the most ever for this topic at one time.

Well, their attitude has been a big turnoff (cruise line). I can't even get a straight answer about where our meeting space is going to be. Makes it very difficult for me to convey information to our families if I can't even get a straign story.

Yes, two meeting rooms. And then theater space (where they put us last time - it was terrible - we complained and went on deck to meet). Also, they didn't give us the fridges in the rooms we asked for. I made a huge stink about that. We'll see what happens this time. I'm hopeful, but I'll tell you, we won't be doing this again.
